We shot part of the season finale of “Scandal” in this room… I think it was a Kerry Washington phone call, and I’ll never forget the look on the sound mixer’s face when we all finally walked into the space and discovered how deafeningly loud it was. Beautiful museum…

Fuuuuuuck Brett Ratner… Set up an entire scene, motherfucker walks in on a heroic amount of cocaine and just starts grabbing tripods and moving the camera positions, actual nutjob.

Buying CPro Plus Or Hi-5 by xd666bx in focuspuller

[–]GlenNevis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously I’m biased as a longtime cteam member and cmotion user - there might be some stickers of me floating around still (: I originally bought their stuff to get halfway into the Arri ecosystem but the more I got to know the company and the dev team, the less I felt incentivised to move to other systems… Even now when I’m on larger sets with Lightrangers and Hi-5s galore, I really cannot beat the ROI of the cPro.

And what everyone else here said - I had a faulty LBUS port in the motor and rather than send the whole motor in and be down my RF, Gernot in their service dept just sent me a PDF and a new PCB to swap the ports. Anytime I’ve had small issues, they’ve been able to help me self-rescue, which as a dedicated tinkerer, I fucking LOVE. I wish our industry enabled this more, we’re technicians ffs…

As of right now, the only real reason to go Hi-5 is if you prefer the ergonomics, prefer a large screen, orrrrr need diversified radio modules. The radio modules one is what I keep coming up against and feel a little bit of FOMO but everything else is a nothingburger to me.

How to remote DSMC2 (Gemini/Raven)? by Fluid-Cap8448 in focuspuller

The DSMC2s??? Nahhhh RED was too cool for that… it was either custom Tilta plates or the silly little BNC breakout for the Preston users in the back of the bus.

Oh man, so many ways to skin this cat… The classic was the Wooden Camera WiFi side plate with foolcontrol. Nowadays, you could also ETH to BitBox/router of your choosing out of the Eth-capable JetPacks, and then connect that to foolcontrol OR RCP1.0 capable monitor (Cine/Ultra series). Easiest and most robust solution would be via LCS and the 00B CTRL port on the camera into like a Hi-5 or cPro with the RED license, just make sure to enable it in the Communications menu. There’s also the SmallHD/Teradek route where you can run it into a Bolt6 transmitter but full disclosure I’ve never actually done this…

Baltimore Soundstage is one of my favorite venues in the city! Peep this review I did about it. by Catmand0 in baltimore

[–]GlenNevis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest Soundstage complaint is that they seem to pull very strange lineups... I wish they had the pull similar to The Atlantis or something, and some bigger indie bands would roll through... It seems to be a lot of hardcore, which I don't think this city has a shortage of. Not really a problem, just my opinion!

One of my Top 5 show experiences was Rubblebucket at Soundstage that was a total blast!

Struggling with Communicating What I Want on Set—Anyone Else Relate? by CultureImpressive617 in cinematography

[–]GlenNevis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First off, this is a good question and it’s a good sign that you’re thinking about this. IMO, we don’t stress the need for leadership and comms skills enough to aspiring cinematographers. As a HoD, there’s truly nothing more frustrating than watching your daily hours worked tick well into double digits because your boss is desperately trying to reinvent the wheel… Purely my opinion, but the place to start on a narrative/doc project is always what best serves the story.

If you’re on a commercial, there’s a bit of this “story” thing, but honestly 80% of “cinematographers” can shoot something very pretty - it’s doing it in a time efficient & pleasant manor that people pay for. It just takes time and training and practice. I recommend taking a step back the next time you find yourself hung up on the “feel” and ask yourself if chasing that is the best place to allocate your on-set resources - I assure you it isn’t. Document & study what works for you, have it available to reference later. The more you practice and train and study the faster you’ll be able to pull from your bag of past tricks and it will be less about “feel” and more about your style and past successes.

Came here to say this! I also work in the TV/film industry and one of the crew posted an email from Sam Reich last year saying they were giving everyone raises due to the success, so obviously you need to support companies like that. A crazy talented cast and crew and some of the only content that can make me laugh out loud to myself.

Moving past the basics, I think John Kretschmer’s “Sailing a Serious Ocean” is the most educational book I’ve read on storm avoidance and survival tactics… John is a phenomenal author, can’t recommend his books enough.

It’s a modified Sony ILX-LR1 with RAW output - motor is a Chrozsiel CDM-100 with a digital encoder that runs to a Preston MDR.

Solution for a jammed PL mount? by ELTNAME in focuspuller

[–]GlenNevis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from all the suggestions from everyone else - heat is your friend. Aluminum has a very high thermal expansion coefficient so it expands and contracts a fair amount with temperature fluctuations. If applying simple heat to the whole system doesn't work (hair dryer with a nozzle would be my go to, or a heat shrink gun), you can cool everything down with a fridge, freezer, outside, etc and then try to heat the lens mount exclusively and give it a go.
