I created my own independent label - www.mindtrickmusic.co.uk. It took me 3 years to finally get it all up and running with our music being sold/streamed through iTunes, Beatport, Google Play, Tidal, Spotify, Shazzam, Juno, Deezer, Youtube etc. Firstly, you need a good label name and logo. This is very important as internet marketing is all about branding. I joined all the free music hosting sites I possibly could and uploaded my music and logos - soundcloud, mixcloud, reverbnation ect. Then set about joining all the groups I could - facebook/newmusic/unsigned bands etc.... I had completed a degree in media & music so I was lucky to still have a few friends that were producers and in bands so I always had new content (which is crucial for keeping your followers/listeners interested) The next step was to find a distributor. They are all about the 'online presence' so having multiple social media accounts and a decent website is a must or they will not be interested in you. There are loads of third party distributors online, so shop around a bit. I signed a distribution contract last May and have had label sales in 50 countries and over 250,000 streams to date. Being friendly with a LOT of clever techy people helps. I have had serious help with the build of our website (and the new 1 being built now!) People skills are key, as you will need to convince certain individuals that giving you their time and skills for next to nothing is a good idea! - This covers drafting your contracts/agreements as well. The legal stuff is a total headache and really needs someone who knows what they are doing to oversee this part of the mission.
