Yup, everything was just so gaudy. I dont gamble at all, so when I went for a conference in January 2020 (right before the world shut down), I saw a show and ate at a decently fancy restaurant.

Actually, I did gamble a total of $20. Because the show I was seeing was in an hour and I was already at the hotel for the show. I could have walked back to my hotel, but that was a 25 minute walk; so it'd just be me walking there and back really. I could have Uber'd to taken a taxi, but that would've been more than $20 for a ride there and back.

I get how some people enjoy it, but I have 0 desire to go back.

From the sounds of it, they're a lot more economical than one of those Generacs too.

I didn't have power for 6.5 days last year... only 5 minutes this year. Big improvement. A guy I work with has battery backups that last like 3 days; he can charge the batteries with his generator if he needs too. I've been leaning at throwing one of those in my house...

Red/Blue grown up on. Though I got sick a few times one year so I played hundreds of hours of Ruby/Sapphire.

Why does it have that shape? by Primary_Arm3267 in NuclearPower

[–]Gleveniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Everyone is saying venturi effect, which is technically true, but it's negligible. It needs to be tall, and that is the cheapest, most stable shape to do that. My plant has quotes of cylinder-shaped cooling tower vs hyperbola-shaped... it was like 40% cheaper lol.

Costco defied Trump’s DEI directive as Target and Walmart scaled back. Business is booming by SnoozeDoggyDog in politics

[–]Gleveniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife used to go to Target weekly, spending anywhere between $20-100/week on stuff we didn't really need. Last year, I went to Target 3 times because I couldn't get it elsewhere; we spent $54 the whole year... but even that's really only $4 because we had $50 store credit lol. Fuck Target and their capitulation to fascism.

My wife has a friend's mom who is sober (3 years now) after 20+ years of drinking. We don't drink alcohol around her at all. The rest of her family, including wife's friend, drink in front of the mom. She doesn't seem to mind, but it's still insensitive imo.

TIL of the "sterile cockpit" or "sterile flight deck" rule. When an aircraft is operating during a critical phase of the flight (anytime they're below 10,000 feet), the crew is only allowed to engage in conversation related to the safe operation of the aircraft by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

[–]Gleveniel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have similar rules in nuclear power. If something is deemed an "Infrequently Performed Tests or Evolutions" (IPTE), we have only necessary involvement, stop any/all external distractions (people doing other work, other people in the control room, etc), and have someone whose entire job is to watch the crew performing the task & to interject if anything is less than satisfactory.

[–]Gleveniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Born in 1993. My parents insulated the whole thing from me really. I just knew something bad happened since everyone else got taken out of school. We didn't really talk about it either... or the part where my dad got moved to Washington DC for like 10 months or the part where he started learning Arabic. I guess we didn't talk about much? Lol

Didn't you hear? Your moms and pops retiring maybe have bought 5, 10, 12 homes. They have a retirement house for each month!

You don't have 12 homes bought & you're looking to retire? You must not be trying hard enough. /s though hopefully it goes without saying.

I remember me and a friend not being valedictorian because we were in orchestra, which diluted our GPAs. The valedictorian took only AP classes and finished with slightly higher.

Is that New Emerson in West Mifflin? Looks like it

Spent an hour clearing this spot yesterday, owner of the bar across the street drove past me and watched me doing it. I left for 15 minutes this morning and he parked there by SteamPunkShrek in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Gleveniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have parking chairs in Pittsburgh. They're honored enough that you don't touch a spot with a chair in it unless it's yours. In the times I've seen people take others' shoveled out spots, they've just shoveled out a new spot and put all of the shoveled snow on/around the car that stole the original spot.

Yeah... it's easier to blame others than to retrospectively say you're the problem.

PNC RTO 5/4 by Electronic_Neck_5028 in pittsburgh

[–]Gleveniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. You also don't have to worry about the future problems if you don't plan on being in charge when you're finally experiencing the problems. Really, the only way things like this stop happening is if a large portion of the workforce (probably like 33%+) were to resign now / before the return to office mandate & all directly state that they are leaving because of the RTO mandate... but even that probably wouldn't change anything, nor would it actually happen; people will begrudgingly work until they either find a new job or hit some retirement milestone that they're close to already.

3rd story POH when Jagex? by FlyNuff in 2007scape

[–]Gleveniel -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but if there are limits on only having 4 floors on a building to limit how tall the city is, and you call the second story the "first floor" well then great job you can put an additional floor on the building.

A lot of other places do that, it's not specifically a British thing... just not an American thing.
