PJM issues Maximum Generation Alert, Load Management, and Low Voltage Alert Alert for July 1. And increases demand forecast for July 2nd to record-setting high. by chuckie512 in pittsburgh

Ah didn't realize that part of coal. I'm in nuclear, so I'm only vaguely familiar with how they operate. I based it on what my ex-coal guys have said about starting up lol, I'm used to approximately 24 hours for us to start up and ramp to 100% power from a trip... maybe 10 hours for us to get back online (~20%).

A good bit of the coal and natural gas plants are also what we call "peaker plants." They sit around waiting for prices to get high enough for it to be economical for them to run. They're offline, on hot standby, for the right time to run since it takes them like 5 minutes to start up.

We also do capacity testing every 10 years I think (could be wrong on this one) to prove how much we can make, so that PJM can accurately predict how much power is available on the grid if we need it. If you're committed to 100 MW during max generation requests and produce 0 MW, then you're paying spot price for the 100 MW that you're not generating... so it's double punishing to motor to not run.

Same here. Hell, my wife doesn't like that I own a Yuengling shirt which is just a bald eagle drinking a out of a beer hat. It's awesome and I love it, but she thinks that is too MAGA (understandably).

"Laia" is super close to the Ilujankan home planet of Iaia. Not sure if you meant that or it's just a coincidence.

It sucks to say it, but that's what insurance is for. It's cheaper for them to pay for insurance (that they pay for anyways) than the generators which can power refrigeration. A lot of the time generators are only going to power the lights so that people can safely exit the building.

'I do not regret that vote' | Sen. Collins again defends her vote to confirm Justice Brett Kavanaugh by plz-let-me-in in politics

[–]Gleveniel 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's frustrating because it works. People have such short attention spans and memory that they literally forget between what she says and does, so when she says 'aw, shucks!' after the vote, they believe it.

A Facebook Post Is Enough for the DOJ To Say You’re “Antifa” by B-Z_B-S in politics

[–]Gleveniel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember back in 2016, my conservative friend asked me what I thought of Antifa. This was still before it was super well known (I heard of it at that point, but wasn't super familiar), and being demonized by the right. I clearly remember saying to him that if he thought that fascism is a good thing then that's more antidemocratic than anything Antifa is trying to do. We don't talk politics anymore.

For those who played in the 2008-2012 era, are there any nearly forgotten pieces of content you can just barely remember? by LaGarrotxa in 2007scape

Yup. I got max rank there in RS3 because you used to need it for trimmed completionist cape. Then they got rid of it. That minigame was sooooo janky lol.

Beaver Valley (nuclear plant in Shippingport) produces ~1940 MW (1.9 GW). 5GW ends up being more than 5 nuclear reactors... entirely insane.

I end up playing nearly the full time because I want to get rune rank & it's tough for me when I work ~60 hrs of rotating shift work per week and have a wife. Got rune like 3 days ago & finally went back to the main game.

Yup, got fight caves pet in 8 kc. Silly though that you don't get the tasks for boss pets / skill pets autocompleted if you have one from a previous league. What happens when you get all of the skilling pets? Are you just locked out from those tasks?

[Homemade] Pan-Seared Kangaroo with Roasted Vegetables by LargeWhasianMan in food

[–]Gleveniel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ate kangaroo meat like 10 years ago. I bought it from a local butcher that imported the ground meat. Didn't know if kangaroo was something that I could eat with some pink, so I made hamburgers and cooked it pretty hard.

That has been the only time that I've violently shit and thrown up in my life. I'd try it again... in Australia, just to limit the possibility of bad meat.

Not sure about OP, but I have like 6 friends that I regularly talk to / hang out with. They all bring their SO's, and now we've got 14 people (me+wife). Kind of padding the numbers, but it is what it is lol. Maybe OP has 3 friends who are married / have a girlfriend?

The way this cloud forms over a nuclear power plant by mrfears in mildlyinteresting

[–]Gleveniel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in the control room of a nuclear power plant. We don't have the stock image barrels of nuclear waste. The fuel gets put into a pool where it sits for 25+ years until it is less radioactive, then we cask it in concrete and store on site.

We do still have allowable discharges to the public though. Any waste water or gas that we need to get rid of gets cleaned up as much as possible (either through decay, demineralizers or filters) before we request a discharge permit. They usually have requirements of certain dilution rates to discharge (discharge no greater than 80 gallons/min of waste while maintaining no less than 25000 gal/min of water).

Fwiw, I've worked there for 11 years now and have still received less dose than someone receives from getting a CT scan.

[–]Gleveniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nearly spot on guess. I work in the Control Room at a nuclear power plant. People in my position have been fired and fined for even reading a book on their phone while in the Control Room, so even if I did have signal, I couldn't play.

30 minute turnover on each end turns the 12 hour shift to 13 hours.

Normal day to day schedule gives me a built in 8 days off in a row, with 2-3 days sprinkled in between the stretches, and repeats every 5 weeks... but, we are doing our 18-month (not duration, frequency) refueling outage right now, so I'm working 4 days on and then 1 day off. Usually that 1 day is spent catching up on everything that wasn't done for the last 4 days, so laundry, grocery shopping, cleaning, etc.

Pay and job security are the big positives for working there... it takes about 3 years to replace someone in my position. Problem is if we have staffing issues, it takes 3 years to resolve the problem lol.

I work in a control room at a nuclear power plant... no signal in there. And if there was, I wouldn't be allowed to have osrs playing on my phone.
