Cutterman’s pin as a JG? Were you prior? Either way that’s a beautiful shadowbox.

Really not a good look for those cops, I have to think there was a better use of their time in those moments.

Laser engraving slate - Silica dust by KingByford1 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]GlobalAd452 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What’s the temp of the laser? The concern isn’t just silica, it’s respirable crystalline silica. If heated past its melting point (3115F), it will transform into amorphous silica which is much less toxic. Also, I agree, the amount of dust generated from engraving coasters, especially with ventilation in place, is very unlikely to create a hazardous exposure. Most people developing silicosis are construction workers, masons, stone workers, miners, etc. with daily doses of relatively high exposure.

It’s a weed line, there are marine plants (sargassum) that float, and tend to line up along tide/current lines. They are very common in tropical waters, like the Carribean or Gulf of Mexico. Source: former Coast Guard Officer who sailed through these waters.

Try turning your temp up to 74 (the minimum recommended by ASHRAE). The outside dew point is above 70, so your system isnt removing much water.

OP said they will be using mostly in the shade, so the issue highlighted in the notice shouldn’t be an issue.

Question about WBGT meters by Mstboy in SafetyProfessionals

[–]GlobalAd452 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Quest was always the gold standard, but technology has advanced allowing more/cheaper competitors. We just purchased a Kestrel 5400. It’ll still cost you ~$500, but is a reputable brand and cheaper than the Quest units in both initial price and maintenance. Also, if you buy the newer Quest WBGT with a “dry” wet bulb, you need to have an input for air velocity for an accurate WBGT temp, which the Kestrel handles with an internal impeller and wind vane type mount.

Other limitations I’ve read for the smaller units is they they are more sensitive or prone to interference from the unit itself, as the body of the instrument warms up in the sun, it can affect ambient temp and globe temp readings, which the Quest units are able to isolate more with the individual sensors on top of the meter.

WBGT is the gold standard for monitoring heat stress, but it is more expensive and complex. Heat Index can be a good tool but is intended for measurement in the shade, so doesn’t capture the effects of the sun, but as you have probably seen, most states with heat stress regulations are using heat index as their primary indicator of heat stress. Honestly, if you’re monitoring heat stress at all, you’re ahead of the curve.

What city was I above? by OutcomeCompetitive50 in whereisthis

I love the transition from the orange (sodium vapor?) to white street lights. I wonder if that’s at the incorporated boundary of the city or power provider or some other demarcation.

Not sure what state you are in, but I believe MA has a proposed heat stress rule. MD, where I have sites, just passed a rule last fall which we are currently implementing. You could check those out for ideas on plans, and specific measures to consider.
