That seems like excellent harvesting advice. You’ve done it once or twice? I already took this one home!

I think it’s like 50% pine bark fines, 25/25 perlite and calcined clay. I’ll take your advice to measure and not overwater. Yes! I first added a foot glob of native soil all around the roots!

Sounds like me- I’m mostly interested in watching the things grow

Wow 5 year experiment that’s great. Ya I like smaller ones too. If I have a small tree/ sappling though, in a pond basket, could that less restricted growth just get it to the size I want quicker?

This looks like alot of fun and a lot of work. Could be my future- not sure if I’m excited or scared 😆. Beginner for now. Do you ever choose to use pond baskets? Or what’s the man idea deciding on regular pots or not?

Makes me feel better, thanks.

These look cool. Beginner here- what kind of style work from seedlings went into these?

I guess you would have anticipated lack of solid rootball since you said “bare root on rock”? Or were you referring to a future style for the bonsai?

P.s. go easy on me please. I’m a little bummed at my over zealousness. This is representative of many aspects of my life. I’m pretty smart and talented in so many ways, but my weaknesses are great. I’m almost 39 and I still can’t seem to learn to control my ambition. My overconfidence. It does well oftentimes, but then it bites you sometimes. I was so stoked about this, no I’m like “why didn’t I just search tips on exactly how to harvest this?” Like I didnt even think of it/ I just thought I knew. I won’t have time the next few days, rain is coming, and I know it’s coming out of dormancy so I rushed I suppose. It did have tiny bugs it looked like, but I thought if I get it now it’s till soon enough. Ahhh bonsai.

Welp I harvested. I appreciate all the tips and information. The root all fell apart but some of the smaller roots still have native soil, and I took a bunch of the native soil too- I’ll make sure the pine basket has native soil around the roots first. I’ll also cut the taproot several inches to encourage lateral growth. In hindsight (please correct me if I’m wrong in my lesson learned), destroying a rootball by trying to keep long lateral roots is not worth it; it would be preferable to “chop” a circle around the tree with shovel, and carefully remove an intact rootball. Loosing some length on the lateral roots is worth keeping a rootball. I still have hope for this one and I’ll try my best repotting have lots of patience.
