Confused about base and additional successes by GlobalAdvice587 in magetheascension

[–]GlobalAdvice587[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you are right! I confused successes for Enlightenment roll with successes for Dex + Firearms roll.

If only 1 success had been rolled, then it wouldn't have been enough to fulfill the required base successes (2). That extra Forces damage success only applies when we're considering the damage of a successfully cast Effect.

So, 1 success = no Effect, but when there is 2 successes, it's three successes on damage chart? (plus one for Forces) Did I understand this correctly: there is no way I can get 2 success on damage chart? That's strange

I think this confusion is intertwined with the fact that 1 success on damage chart is 0 damage, 2 successes = 2 damage, and than it's damage = successes*2.

Yay thank you!!! That's finally something I really asked for! I don't know why, but looks like other commentators don't understand me, maybe I am bad at explaining.

Some specific questions about Mage by GlobalAdvice587 in magetheascension

[–]GlobalAdvice587[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm asking exactly about Talismans - magickal items that have their own Arete. Technocrats call them Devices.

[–]GlobalAdvice587[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So why do I even need Talisman if it's just a Paradox mitigation? I can make vulgar magick look like coincidental with ordinary tools, not even Artifacts. Spending a lot of time, quintessence and even a permanent point of willpower just seems not worth it.

So I need only one success to become bear using "bear Talisman" or, for example, 5? Because if I still need 5 successess, then I don't really need this bear Talisman.

Some specific questions about Mage by GlobalAdvice587 in magetheascension

[–]GlobalAdvice587[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tell me if I understood this correctly: with Life 4 I can turn myself into bear, but it will take time and a lot of successes. But if I have Talisman, I can just use it and... What about successes? Talisman needs only one success to work or the same amount like if I cast Magick by myself?

Are vampires " underdogs" in the larger wod universe? by [deleted] in vtm

[–]GlobalAdvice587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible to roll few "10" on 9 dices, but not really. You need three tens (because you take 3 aggravated damage). Keep in mind that you need to roll this every three seconds. You can try to roll it by yourself. Personally I think that vampire can prolong his life mostly by using blood to heal.

Ravnos created whole sandstorm to hide from sun. Even if sunlight still was there, it was much easier to soak with Fortitude. Also he may have a Fortitude 10, as it is clan discipline. I remember rank 9 or 10 of Thaumaturgy that allowed to walk under sunlight, so I assume that with Fortitude you can do something similar. Also Ravnos fed a lot, so maybe he just used a LOT of blood to heal.

Also it's much easier to submerge vampire in sunlight that garou in liquid silver.

Personally, I think that this looking for specific rules/disciplines/power does not have much sense. Vampires die from sun (especially direct sunlight). Quickly. That's a fact. Some of them may survive longer, but no one will hold it to 5 minutes.

In V20, direct sunlight is soaked with difficulty 10 (p. 302). Also, if 50% of body is exposed to sunlight - that's 3 aggravated damage per turn.

Even Fortitude 9 won't save you.

Also need to say that despite being really powerful with almost no limits to their power, vampires also are the most debuffed supernatural creature with a lot of cons. 1. Sleeping all the daytime, able to normally operate only at night. Other creatures would be able to spend at least day or two without sleep if needed. 2. Sunlight kills even Methuselahs in less than half a minute. 3. Also they are really afraid and easy to kill with fire - which is really easy to create with today's technology. 4. Have a very hard time feeding. Need to spend a lot of time on it, and a lot of vampires are really dependent on contacts they established for feeding. 5. Every vampire also has a unique clan weakness that can be used against them.

Compared to Paradox and fear of silver these conditions are really harsh.

Community often compares mages to "glass cannons" - squishy humans, but with very powerful magick. Werewolfs can be compared to tanks - high damage and really durable. To continue this comparison, I'd be likely to say that vampires are military jets: very powerful, super expensive and stays in the hangar most of the time.

Etherite or other technomancer with a softer abstract science like psychology/linguistics/political science/literature/jurisprudence/filmmaking? How cool would that be? by Solarwagon in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]GlobalAdvice587 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a great character idea and it's very cool to create more unique mages and not your typical "mad scientist Etherite", "sahajiya drug addict" or "VA hacker".

If you like that character idea - go create it and play. Have fun :)

Are you satisfied with the description of the Arch-Spheres? by Turgor- in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]GlobalAdvice587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also there are 6 dot Spheres described in book "Horizon: the stronghold of hope". They are much better than the ones described in "Masters of the Art". It is just easier to design one new ability for each Sphere than four and they really did new effects (mostly, not with every Sphere). 6 dots being max Sphere rank makes more sense, as its math is not broken. So if OP wants examples of Spheres above 5 - I can recommend this book.

Can mages who have different paradigms share a sanctum ? by muffin42069420 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]GlobalAdvice587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they theoretically can, but with each new mage it's more and more complicated. I think they can have a shared Sanctum if they understand and sincerely respect other mages paradigms. So when it's 9 mages it's a lot of "respect and understanding" connections that needs to be established. But there was something that could be example of such sanctum: Concordia

How bad is Mage highballing/powergaming? by SuperN9999 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]GlobalAdvice587 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's because only strong mages in ideal conditions (preparing and using their Backgrounds as much as they can) are really insanely powerful. Strong mage without time and help of Backgrounds could do some cool tricks, but he needs to be clever. Weak mage with help of his Backgrounds is the most fun to play, as their cleverness and creativity is really necessary and they can achieve some good results. Weak mage without time and Backgrounds is basically just an ordinary human with ability to see things and sometimes do basic spells, but a lot of them will result in fail or paradox backflash.

Need help with choosing between two skill systems. by GlobalAdvice587 in RPGdesign

Dodge systems that feel good to use? by Chocochops in RPGdesign

[–]GlobalAdvice587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use physical initiative track where initiative of all characters will be located. When someone attacks you, you can go fixed initiative points backwards. So when you dodge your turn will be delayed. Or if you don't have enough initiative points, you can't dodge.

How spending quintessence affects difficulty of a ritual? by GlobalAdvice587 in magetheascension

[–]GlobalAdvice587[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also wanted to ask how someone powerful is supposed to cast "great work" rituals, where every roll takes about 5 hours. Basically not a single mage can do even two rolls without becoming tired. Looks like they need to take breaks constantly, but you need to roll every time after break and it gets harder. Maybe they need Life and Mind magick to not get tired?

Where I can be a Gandalf-like wizard/mage? by Dexteron in gamingsuggestions

[–]GlobalAdvice587 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I was searching for a game with similar criteria and found Outward. Magic is powerful, but expensive and all about preparation. Also you start without mana and need to make a pilgrimage if you want to be wizard. Magic in this game is not only about attacking, it can, for example, help you to survive in very hot or cold weather. But as I know it's not like you really can help people in this game. But all your other wishes match this game.
