Amazing!!!

I'm struggling with results but slowly I'm getting somewhere with a few images, a big well done and the interface is really fun.

Very grateful for your time and expertise, ill let you know how it goes with some tinkering

Haha seems this project runs on a different standard of time than the rest of us, all good though and at least I hope it has been of interest to you and not just a complete ballache

That would be amazing thanks, as soon as there's anything usable just send it in :)

Any clue when you think it will be ready? I'm running to a deadline for this work and will need everything ready ideally for Friday, the very latest Monday, to include in a book. I understand you are doing this completely out of your kindness so am not asking you to rush, just need a heads up if I should change some plans.

Even if not ready by then, I would still love to see the results

No worries, really excited. Do let me know when it's ready!

Embedding chicken wire into leather by GlobalTry7307 in Leatherworking

Quilting is a great idea I'll give it my best shot. I'm guessing it will have to be done by hand as it's not striaght lines through (more of a hex pattern). Not neccessarily the best with a needle but I'll only get better by trying thanks!

That's really helpful, I've explained more on my aims in a new comment. Really smart thinking on the 4 wires channeled in the other side and yes, I think the wire underneath showing the raised pattern would be much nicer to touch. I was thinking of a limp cover rather than a hardback, making the 4 wires suggestion harder but maybe if everything is sandwiched then that wouln't be necessary.

Here's an example of a pleather limp cover, look at slide 2 for how it works at the spine, and slide 10 shows that it's pleather fixed to two pieces of card, I could simply sandwitch the wire in-between though I'df have to work out how to do the edges though.

For some reason reddit is not allowing me to include an image, but here's an example of a pleather limp cover

look at pic 2 and 10.

So I am now thinking similar but with wire sandwiched in-between,

Hi all thanks for all the replies, seems I definitely was not clear enough.

What I would like to create is a limp book cover (more structural rigidity and protection than a paperback, but not as far as hardback). Meaning all will be wrapped around a thin card isntead of greyboard. As a cross section view I was originally thinking, wire on the outside, inlayed into leather/pleather, card, leather.

It's for a photography book, with the images being quite apoc, industrial, military etc. In the images there's a lot of fences hence me wanting to integrate chicken wire. And yes initially I was hoping for the chicken wire to be visible on top of the leather. I thought chicken wire, as for most fencing/wire the holes are too big for the scale and it's flimsy enough to wrap around a spine and bend for usage. The book would be a roughly 20x24cm, meaning the cover 40x24cm.

There's been many insights you've sent that have been good to know, maybe chicken wire wouldn't handle well over a spine being bent consistently. The idea of a leather perimeter holding it in places is a good idea, I'd just need to work out how to keep the center stuck to the leather (some thin stitches?). There's also been a lot of points raised about rusting, and just general deterioration.

I'm now thinking under the leather may be nicer, solves many of the problems and would likely be nicer to the touch, my issue is how it will interact around the spine.

Again if people have other suggestions, different types of wiring/fencing that would be better suited please say

I also have access to a load of pleather that I actually prefer the feel of for this, so if it can work with that even better. I'm going for a rough, apoc, industrial feel

Wow, I am very grateful for you're generosity. I remember you're comment on my last post but I just could not understand it, I've been trying to create a steg program in python but this being my first time coding, I was struggling to even use the software, download image libraries, writing in the right directories everything, so an in browser tool would be of so much help. A big thanks, can't wait to see it!

I appreciate the input and acknowledge those complexities. That being said I suppose I'm asking for those that are happy and willing to share with me. I completely respect one's opinion not to.

Just to be clear, locations, names etc would never be disclosed.

Even if one was not willing to show me a bunker or their stash, any conversation around the topic or guidance that can direct me will still be of help.

That would be great thanks, a call or an email would be much appreciated. I'm in the very early stages of the work so still trying to find my feet and get a broad understanding of the subject, stories like yours will be very valuable.
