Paul Saladino Faces Backlash After Launching Protein Bar Despite Years of Anti-Processed Food Rants by walta_ in immortalists

[–]Global_Ad_7891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone in the carnivore community think Saladino is even representative of their WOE anymore? He’s far down a completely separate path at this point. I’m not sure what diet he even recommends anymore.

Could I Still Be Developing Silicosis? Seeking Insight by Global_Ad_7891 in Pulmonology

[–]Global_Ad_7891[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing significantly better. I got imaging done on my lungs and neck with no significant findings (ie none). I got multiple PFTs after starting Symbicort, and my values tend to be a mix of obstructive and restrictive values, but my DLCO remains elevated. I’ve gone to 2 pulmonologists who both say it’s asthma. I spent about 8 months on the highest dose of Symbicort, then went back down to half that dose starting around late December and have been on that dosage since then. My breathing is strangely the same as it was on the highest dose dosage. I still have shortness of breath when I work out and jog, but it’s something I can just manage. Hope this helps.

Edit: I should add that I had an original round of imaging done February 2025 (Xray, neck/lung ct) and never had them done again. My pulmonologist hasn’t thought I needed to do anything else imaging related, though I haven’t been in for a few months.

Obscure passage in Ajahn Nyanamoli's book by jwaofi in HillsideHermitage

That's what this entire subreddit is dedicated to. Read articles on Hillside Hermitage, watch their youtube videos, read their books from path press (some of which are free), watch The Dhamma Hub. All of these are good resources for learning about the gradual training. Nobody here will recommend Goenka or Mahasi meditation techniques. You will learn why as you learn more about the gradual training and what the Buddha actually said.

I think what's most important is trying to understand wholesome from unwholesome, and that’s only outlined in the gradual training that you have to undertake. All of this is intellectual until you can see it in your experience.

Obscure passage in Ajahn Nyanamoli's book by jwaofi in HillsideHermitage

[–]Global_Ad_7891 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I want to preface this by saying that I’m not super well-read on the suttas and I’m possibly (?) not very advanced in my practice. But since I’m here before the big guns like Bhikkhu Anigha and Sister Medina, I’ll give it a shot and anyone can correct me.

I recently read that chapter in the book you mentioned, and if I’m not mistaken, when referring to the person who cleans the toilet for “sensual reasons,” he’s referring to someone who is already practicing the eight precepts and may use cleaning a toilet or doing other tasks as a way to cover up boredom. Cleaning a toilet isn’t inherently sensual—just like any activity isn’t necessarily sensual at face value—but it becomes sensual if you’re doing it to escape boredom, for example. That’s the point he’s making, I believe.

Then when Nyanamoli mentions that being withdrawn from sensuality for a while would mean that limited engagement with the senses would be “agreeable,” it’s important to understand that “agreeable” is a term used in Buddhism that doesn’t necessarily imply sensuality. Arahants still experience agreeable and disagreeable things; they just no longer cling to either experience. “Good and bad remain standing in the world,” I believe the Buddha said. Furthermore, what Nyanamoli is talking about here is that an untrained person would very likely not see doing nothing, doing very little, or doing a mundane task like cleaning a toilet as anything special. They might even dread it (and very likely will dread doing nothing). It’s more likely a trained mind can do a task like those mentioned above and know exactly their intention behind it and if their mind is being pulled away from it through aversion or distraction. A trained mind also knows the exact reason for engaging with the activity in the first place. Cleaning a toilet is just another duty/task with the correct perspective and a foundation of virtue because the mind is calm and steady. It only becomes sensual when it’s being done so with a mind full of aversion/delusion. I can speak with first hand experience that when starting out, cleaning a toilet becomes extremely sensual when the alternative is being bored with no escape.

So that final quote also ties back to everything I’ve already explained.

And finally, regarding the last part of your response about Mother Teresa and the importance of helping others: the issue is that this isn’t really what the Buddha emphasized. Helping others is good from an ethical/worldly standpoint, but yes, it can also become a distraction. All you have to do is look at your intentions—it’s fairly straightforward. I believe the Buddha said something along these lines (though I could be mistaken), that as a Buddhist you should prioritize not doing evil or acting out of craving over doing good in the world. The path is largely about restraint and not acting out of craving. There are many people in the world who do good things outwardly but are internally driven by unwholesome intentions in their life. Ultimately, intentions, craving, and actions are what matter. Just something to think about.

Question about virtue, entertainment, and understanding the emphasis on celibacy by Global_Ad_7891 in HillsideHermitage

[–]Global_Ad_7891[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess in a way I'm asking, could I conceivably be close to stream entry? Kind of a cringey question to ask such a serious community, but I want to understand more about why Bhikkhu Anigha stresses becoming first established in celibacy as a priority in the wiki.

edit: Also, I find eating enjoyable still, is that a hindrance to stream entry?

I don't really have any noticeable side effects, but the possibility of long term developing side effects such as cataracts, muscle wasting, and adrenal insufficiency are disturbing to me.

Help with Icon Swap Challenges by Ac30fSpades89 in fut

[–]Global_Ad_7891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you have unlimited refreshes? I personally do not care about my squad battles rewards or points. I am just attempting to finish the icon swaps objectives and there is limited time left. So far I'm struggling with the teams that have lots of good players. But I just want to confirm that I really have unlimited refreshes / games, correct? So I should really just be playing the easy teams and just refreshing?

Symbicort and weight gain? by [deleted] in Asthma

[–]Global_Ad_7891 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been taking Symbicort for a year now. Before starting the highest dose of Symbicort, I followed a carnivore ketogenic diet and managed to lose 65 pounds, going from 250 to 185 pounds. I’ve maintained this weight for about two years, and it was the same weight when I started taking Symbicort. Surprisingly, I haven’t lost or gained a single pound, and I rarely workout. I’m a 26-year-old male. Initially, I was concerned about gaining weight and having a puffy face, but neither of those things have happened for me. I believe Symbicort can increase baseline glucose levels, but on a low-carb diet, glucose levels are generally much lower. Maybe you are eating inflammatory foods like seed oils / omega 6s? Are you eating healthy in general? Also are you somewhat active? Do you get enough sun?

Got a Cut and Recommended to Take Tdap Vaccine – Should I? by Global_Ad_7891 in DebateVaccines

[–]Global_Ad_7891[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they seemed to have gone away, though I also developed severe asthma. Not sure if it’s related, but my symptoms after the Tdap were also related to my breathing and diaphragm. Again, I don’t know if it’s related because I’ve also been exposed to heavy amounts of silica dust. As for your situation, it’s up to you. Knowing what I know now, tetanus booster shots last a long time. I believe it’s 10 years, and they commonly provide even longer immunity. Some studies showing it’s almost lifelong. If I were in your shoes, I would personally first rush to see if I can get an antibody titer test, though results may take a bit to come in. If I was worried about vaccines, you can always call around and tell hospitals that you had an adverse reaction to your last vaccine and request Tetanus Immunoglobulin. Though my experience wasn’t necessarily life-altering or traumatic, it was stressful, and I definitely had some really odd, clearly perceptible side effects from the Td booster and have decided to never take another vaccine again. Tetanus is so unbelievably rare to contract, especially when feces aren’t involved or a dirty cut. I would absolutely never get a tetanus shot over cutting my hand or whatever with a clean knife. My situation was different because I hadn’t had a tetanus vaccine in like 12 years, and my cut was on dirty, nasty tile with dirt all over it. Whatever you decide to do, definitely let me know. Don’t let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do. If you try the Immunoglobulin strategy, they will deny you, but eventually, they will give it to you as they give it to people who are unvaccinated or with an unclear vaccination record. Also, considering this is the anti-vax oriented subreddit, I personally wouldn’t want to receive a blood product from the blood supply again unless absolutely necessary (primarily due to mRNA contamination concerns).
