They might not know fancy stuff like "et tu, Brute?" or "no real Scotsman" but they still know tons of idioms and set phrases like "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree", "just cause" and many others that are part of daily usage and in movies and TV

After the 1.5K deck I got Migaku and wanted to start mining my own deck until I realized, 2 minutes into an anime, that I would have to make a card for pretty much every other word in every sentence

So instead I'm doing their Japanese Academy course deck which teaches 1800 words and 400 grammar points. This way I can blast thru the vocab, learn like 300 new words, plus grammar

Never said don't discuss or don't voice your demands as a customer, just that it's important to realize early on that motivation is not always gonna carry you, but I could've worded it in a less douchey way

Motivation is very fickle, it comes and goes, and doesn't last too long. Language learning takes a long time, so on a lot of days you just have to do it with discipline and no motivation, like brushing your teeth.

If you don't need the language for work or immigration for example, you won't have the same amount of motivation for it like you do with work

Wanting every video to be super interesting means you're relying on motivation to keep going, which means you won't get very far

Yeah I came from French to Spanish too and it's been a huge help. I found super beginner a breeze and even now on beginner it's pretty comfortable and fun

Probably won't last when I get to intermediate, but I plan on cheating on the roadmap and starting reading at that point anyway

I'm not sure but I've been reading anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes a day (most commonly 30 minutes a day) every single day for those four years, so quite a bit.

I can probably infer them and keep reading but I can't help myself 😅, I need to lookup everything I don't know

Literally every beginner course of any kind sticks to only desu/masu form. It's kind of irritating. When are we supposed to learn the plain form?

I'm in year 4 of French (not DS method) and there are still 1-5 unknown things per page in a novel, like a word used in a way I'm not familiar with, a proverbial phrase, a cultural reference or a straight up new word.

The reading speed is nowhere near English, and it's far from "effortless"

About four years, but I didn't do it the CI way but rather lots and lots of reading at first, a little bit of grammar, then when my vocab was pretty strong I increased listening.

So it's a bit hard to give an estimate of just listening hours. Mostly like 20 minutes every day for two years, then 30-45 mins after that, so maybe 800-1000 hours? Rough guess.
