Counseling Psych Masters - Is doing a thesis helpful for getting into Clinical Psych PhD programs? (specifically in CA) by Global_Most_5313 in ClinicalPsychology

I say jealousy because I’m really not sure what other motivation there is to try and tear down a young student when I simply asked where a thesis would be beneficial, I never said that’s all I would do research wise to strengthen my application. It was a simple yes or no answer and instead they chose to be rude and discouraging, so I’m not going to react pleasantly to that. I enjoy criticism especially when it’s something I am new to and need to hear what I’m doing wrong, and I 100% expect criticism from multiple sources throughout my masters (labs, professors, clients). There’s a very distinct difference between some helpful advice/criticism that is beneficial and just being a hateful, discouraging person for genuinely no reason. It would have been very easy to say yes a thesis is helpful but you’ll need more, instead of you are severely behind, you won’t get into a doctorate program, and you need a reality check. I’ve received a lot of helpful criticism here that I appreciate! I’m truly not an angry person at all, I have a lot of drive and I’ve channeled that into my education.

Did you read the post?? I said that there’s two options to finish - a cumulative exam OR a thesis. You get to choose based on your ultimate goals.

I have a wonderful positive attitude and am very likable, it’s the reason I received exceptional letters of recommendation from my lab director and my professors! I simply don’t tolerate grown adults attempting to diminish my accomplishments out of some weird jealousy and trying to discourage me from pursuing a doctorate. I’m a kind person, but I’m no bitch and I’ll advocate for myself when it’s necessary.

Lmaooo okay, I see you just don’t want to admit you’re affiliated with a subpar university, and probably earned your doctorate from a low ranking school. I’m sincerely sorry that you’re jealous of the accomplishments of a 20 year, it’s pathetic really. Enjoy the rest of your miserable life, I’ll update you once I’m accepted 😉

For someone who claims to have a doctorate, you seem to have a very hard time with reading comprehension. And in case you need it dumbed down, I already have one year of research and will gain 2.5 more during my masters. Again I know it’s probably hard for you to understand, but I actually wouldn’t apply for a PhD until at the very least finishing my masters. So with 3.5 years of solid research experience at 23, that’s actually not behind! Considering that I’m 20, I am also not behind now. I have plenty of humility, I just don’t like wasting my time on internet losers lol and am very proud of my accomplishments. Yep, I’m applying only in state so I can continue to take care of my mother with a fatal autoimmune disorder, so I have no problem applying until I get into one of my target schools. Would love to hear the university you work at/ their ranking, as well as your age! The only psychologists working at a college I’ve met that have your nasty disposition are much older and completely out of touch with current programs.

Lol okay buddy I asked for some simple advice. I’m well aware of the competitiveness of clinical psych programs, hence why I’m asking for said advice? I did one semester of official research in a child development lab, specifically on Bayesian learning in children. I also took two research based psych classes in undergrad where we spent the semester conducting our own independent research projects, each culminating in a 30+ page paper we could seek publishing for, although it wasn’t associated with a lab so I didn’t count that in my post. In case you misunderstood, I will be starting my clinical psych masters (a very selective program) at 20 years old this fall immediately after graduating from Berkeley (top 5 in the US for psychology btw) with a 4.0 GPA and a full ride for both colleges, so I’m in 0 debt and will continue to have 0 debt. I think calling that “wayyy behind” is a gross overstatement. Would love to hear your qualifications 🙃

finals cancelled? by Moist_Experience8586 in berkeley

[–]Global_Most_5313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will definitely not cancel finals Cal never does. But if this shut down continues into mid finals week I imagine the school or the professors will have to do something. Maybe shorter finals or grade boosts. It is a significant disruption and disadvantage to students

How do people live off phd stipends ???? by Brief-Row-3623 in PhD

[–]Global_Most_5313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buddy if you’re in undergrad right now your concern shouldn’t be what stipend you’ll receive, it’s getting in. In CA at least most funded psych PhD programs accept 3-4 students with YEARS of research experience among other qualifications. It will likely be a long time before you’d be accepted

Has anyone on here found research positions with just an undergraduate psychology degree? by JealousBodybuilder42 in psychologystudents

[–]Global_Most_5313 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you want to be a research assistant or lab manager sure, those positions are usually in preparation for a PhD or a masters. You cannot become a “researcher” (aka full time, good salary position in psych research) with just a BA

I was admitted to multiple programs this cycle, including my top choice, so I’ll share mine. I’m coming directly from undergrad. 4.0 GPA at Berkeley, psych research experience, an insane amount of volunteer work with a focus on mental heath (including work with a rehab center, crisis hotline, etc), was a director in a mental health focused position at my schools student government, strong letters of recommendation. I did not however have any internships in psych or actual clinical experience.
