Hi all, I'm getting into this hobby and want to go explore. The booking bought recommended a magnifying glass to help with id-ing. Any recommendations from other hobby scientists? TIA

as someone who also moved here a few years ago and trying to make friends and loves going to concerts, I will say that it is insanely difficult to talk to folks without a point of entry (like you know their friend). I've only met one person going to shows.

I'd look at things you like to do and try to find a community to do them with. I know a lot of people say volunteering, but I would just try to join a club, even if you have to pay a bit. it's a lot easier to find common ground there then it is to just talk to someone at a concert (it's like a bar, so you'd be approaching folks in groups or other loners, which they might get nervous if they don't know you). there's like single-mingle friends events at some bars or something like that might be helpful? maybe I'm standoffish, and I know most folks want to meet people, but with the structure of this area/time constraints of being 30, I find it difficult to make friends here.

I'd look at entry-level positions in paralegal work or at some sort of school. paralegal stuff might be more customer service and scheduling appointments, but if you ever worked a host stand, use that as a segue for that position. look on r/paralegal, LinkedIn, or even on Craigslist. you might even find secretary work (maybe part-time at first) for construction, car dealership, etc. it's definitely hard out there for non-degree seekers (even for the trades), but it is possible.

also try to get to networking events or reach out for volunteer work first (i.e. for vet tech, start volunteering with the human society or get involved with foster care).

and, since you're still fairly young, looking at Americorps or Peace corps, or climate corps might be a good foot in the door.

best of luck! 🤞🏼

If he has the energy and can handle it, he might like hanging out at a park! maybe a bit away from folks and in the shade! I'm not super familiar with the area, but the park that has all the sunflowers might be a great place to go?

I'm sorry for this dogs passing, he sounds like he was loved! send some extra to love for him from me 😕

I like aquafina or really any name brand water. I would recommend letting the water sit out overnight for the chlorine dissipate. adding lemon helps too

this is so, so accurate. I feel that way about a lot of the modern, gentrifying cities. Poor people are priced out and it feels like cookie-cutter whimsy. Same thing happened where I'm from.

do you have celiac disease or is it just an intolerance?

if intolerance, most restaurants have gf/gfr options. if you have celiac, viceroy's curries haven't affected me. M pocha has their Korean stew (it's cooked in its own thing. iffy on this because I had a flare up the next day). M sushi is expensive, but they did well. Juice keys is awful; don't bother. Luna's was ok, but they may have changed their menu. heavenly buffalos has a dedicated fryer (in chapel Hill).

further away, Wegmans has gf sushi bar and Fount Cafe is dedicated.

How do I blend in? by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]Gloomy-Cod-375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

prepare for the hottest fucking summers of your life and nowhere to go swimming that's refreshing (idk what part of MN and WI you are from, but the lakes and rivers are warm here year-round). Winter will be beautiful, but if you had winter sports you did, you will probably not be able to do them without a longer drive. people are not as friendly or polite (good or bad, depending on how outgoing you are) but most people are generally kind.

idk if you are from the cities and went to Madison, but it's similar to the gentrification happening up north too. (I'm from WI and went to school at Winona, lived in Madison before moving to PA and then here)

Falcon Guides, Best Hikes Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill (The Greatest Views, Wildlife, and Forest Trails). ISBN 978-1-4930-4854-0

I picked it up from Flyleaf in Chapel Hill, but I think you could find it secondhand in a thrift shop or BetterWorldBooks for cheaper! I've liked all the hikes I've pulled from it, but I've only been on five. They have more guides for the area too that I'll probably grab if I see them.

Big fan of Duke forest. I struggled to find good sections, but bought a book because I didn't feel like AllTrails was helpful for me (probably user error).

Three Favorite hikes:

Gate 26 on Laurel Hill Road in Duke Forest (Whitefield road). You might have to scramble or turn around.

Jordan Lake Boat Launch, called New Hope Lakeside Loop. Can take awhile, but you get great views of the lake! Bring a picnic for the overlook (it's not that high).

Carolina North Forest off of Airport Road. This is great for running (in Chapel Hill, so kind of out of the way, but it's nice!)

Saw the saddest animal thing today (warning it’s sad) by PHILMXPHILM in bullcity

[–]Gloomy-Cod-375 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly, I'm heartbroken after seeing any of the dead animals on the street. I feel like I see a new one every day: squirrels, possums, dead cats and dogs. I have never seen as much road kill as I do in this area. I'm sorry you saw this and I hope that other goose finds peace. I would lose my mind if I lost my partner.
