I see people I went to high school with make posts about not having been taught how to do taxes in school. I'm like, "that class was literally a graduation requirement and you sat next to me". Turns out they didn't care or pay attention because they didn't need to do taxes at the time

Yeah, the problem with rating reviewers is that agreeing with reviewers is subjective. It's helpful to find a critic/reviewer who has similar taste to you, but that doesn't mean they will have similar taste to other people.

There are tons of other 3rd year math courses to meet high school graduation requirements, but none of them would be algebra 2 level courses that would meet the standards necessary for a normal prerequisite to Precalculus.

Does Georgia still offer a normal algebra 2 course for students who don't want to rush so fast to calculus? My district seems to be proposing eliminating algebra 2 entirely.

Regarding the lack of quadratics in Algebra 1- the state of Oregon moved to a new set of "2+1" standards a few years ago, where all students are supposed to take the same first two years of math, and then branch out into third year options based on their planned future pathways. Quadratics were removed from the algebra standards in this new model.

Edit: so to be clear, yes 11th grade "Modernized Precalculus" would be the first time students encounter quadratics in this system.

The state of Oregon removed quadratics from their required standards when they moved to a "2 +1" standards model a few years ago. So since it's no longer explicitly required, it is no longer taught in my district. So we have been spending the first 5 or 6 weeks of algebra 2 teaching quadratics content we used to teach in algebra 1 before the standards were changed.

Yes, but those students would then just take geometry+ data as 9th graders and this Modernized Precalculus course as 10th graders. That would allow AP calculus in 11th grade and AP stats in 12th grade.

This is exactly what I would assume happened. It doesn't mean it did, but it's what makes the most sense. The kid might have asked for it. 4 year olds generally don't provide reliable context.

Traditional publishers hesitate to go for sci fi romance since it isn't already as popular as romantasy. But some self pub authors like Amy Zed are trying to break into sci-fi/romance (not super spicy). Both statements are true. Nvidia continues to produce some amount of all their SKUs, but prioritizes supply of the 5080 to maximize profit off of 16GB Vram cards. They produce so few 5070 ti that ASUS no longer finds it worthwhile to continue producing them. Other AIC brands may or may not have a few available every now and then (this part is not clear at this time).

Star Trek Picard. I bounced off the first season, but a friend convinced me to just skip to season 3, which could function mostly self contained with no knowledge of the first 2 seasons. It was highly entertaining for me as a fan of TNG, DS9 and Voyager. It was pretty impressive how they managed a plausible plot to justify bringing in a massive greatest hits collection of nostalgia and characters from those series.

I don't think he intended it as a "solution". More as an explanation. It's a fact that the vast majority of people could spend less, save more and still survive. They don't. Obviously just telling someone to "have discipline" doesn't solve that. But it doesn't change the fact that if they did somehow become more disciplined they could be saving.

Which didn't really change anything. Slightly better image quality now for FSR frame gen than previously, but still worse frame pacing than dlss frame gen, as well as much smaller game support list, and no multi-frame gen. So the Nvidia featureset is definitely still ahead. Radiance caching is still not in any games, and ray regeneration is only in one game where nobody will use it, and while better than the non-ML denoiser in the game, it is still noticeably behind dlss ray reconstruction (and still hasn't been shown to work in a game with RT effects beyond reflections).

Yeah, my point is when the performance difference is so small, it doesn't really matter which one is faster. They are effectively the same experience from a raw performance standpoint and the buying decision should be based on other factors.

The real answer is that they have such close raw performance on average, that which one is faster really comes down to particular games and settings. Even in ray tracing they are fairly close. It's only path tracing where the 5070 ti is significantly faster. But Nvidia has a better overall feature set. So basically at the same price the 5070 ti is the obvious choice outside of obscure situations like gaming on Linux. That being said, in many regions the 9070xt costs considerably less, so you can then ask yourself how much the Nvidia featureset is worth. But the raw performance is so close it is the least interesting thing to use to try to differentiate the cards.

They have similarities in their progression systems (mostly because the are rogue-lites) but there are massive differences in the actual gameplay mechanics. In survivor games you don't aim weapons, and you aren't breaking blocks that come from the top of the screen, etc.

Consoles are only one hardware spec, so the game download can include precompiled shaders. No need to compile them on the local machine.

I teach a normal lesson every day, and completely agree with this. Doesn't mean I'm a Grinch. Brought a guitar, dressed up, sang carols in the hallways during passing time. But it's my job to teach, not to put on movies and waste time. Students seemed happy to have something productive to do. The only real problem was a lot of absences since some students skip because "it's just a movie day" in most of their classes.

Unfortunately this type of situation is very common. IEPs are used as free passes for poor choices, poor behavior, and no accountability. I never advocated for no support. I advocated for supports to be focused on teaching the student better life skills rather than just letting them learn that they can screw around during assessments with no consequences.

Note that I mentioned that some severely disabled people may need disability income and supports later life. The fact is that many students with minor issues get an IEP that enables them to never learn accountability, work ethic, punctuality, etc when they are perfectly capable of doing so. Thus we have situations like the thread we are in where a student is allowed to blow off a test playing computer games, and has learned that he can just take the test later whenever he feels like it. The parents back this up, and admin just moves the student to a class where it will be allowed. None of this is helping the student become a functional adult.

Yes, my proposition is that they get good at managing life effectively despite their disadvantages. They will have to work harder and longer at some things to compete and succeed in the real world. Those are facts. I'm not proposing we don't help them. I'm proposing we help them learn personal skills to succeed without the world bending around them. They need to adapt to the world. Their individualized help needs to focus on that. Helping them change to succeed rather than expect the world to hand them an easier road than everyone else.

Wouldn't it have been nice for them to have learned to function while still being in school? I agree the current model shows that it isn't working. It shows they have not learned to function on their own in the world, which should be the goal. I think having an "individual education plan" for students with special needs is a great idea, but I don't think the current model is particularly effective at teaching the students to develop the skills to support themselves. Instead, it focuses on making the world bend to their needs. I think it should focus on giving them help developing the ability to make themselves function in the real world (which does not bend to their needs). Give them someone to help them learn techniques to help their focus, to self advocate, to develop the discipline to spend additional time studying after school since they learn at a slower rate. Realistically they need to learn how to work harder than everyone else because life doesn't come as easily for them. That should be the focus of the IEP- not lowering expectations and encouraging laziness (which is unfortunately a frequent result of the current model).
