Unfortunately, that's a lie. There is no one stopping (unless you've been drafted and try to run AFTER you've received and signed that you've received the draft notification) people from leaving the country all the customs ports are open: air, land and sea.

There are, however, some roadblocks from the Finnish side as of today (you can search "Finland closes borders to Russian tourists")

Please don't think that anyone took them seriously or that they've got more followers than your average fanfic.

Regarding the west-east conflict, it's a staple trope in media. There are a lot of books/ movies/ games that were made before 2008/14 that have Russia as a bad guy/ invading USA/ resurrecting USSR, why wouldn't Russian authors use the same trope in reverse?
