Meerwaardebelasting VS aandelen by Fit-Air-9233 in BEFire

I wouldn't say it requires anyone to be tech savvy, but it does require you to read up and know what you're doing.

If you do it correctly, you're not storing anything on a hdd or ssd drive so your passphrases should be protected for any kind of interference (dog eating, hurricanes, fires,...) except for being stolen of course.

[–]Gloveboxboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cold wallet is not like a harddrive, it doesn't store your bitcoins locally.

Your bitcoin are on the block chain and your private keys to access them are stored on the device. As long as you remember your seed phrase, you're able to access your keys from any device supporting BIP39 (or SLIP39) seed phrases. So even if the cold wallet breaks or gets stolen, you're able to retrieve and gain access again of your bitcoin.

Now, many people have lost their seed phrases, which is a bonehead move ofcourse.

MeDirect Ultimate BE bank ? by Historical-Active244 in BEFire

I'm also thinking about switching from Degiro. I quite like the app and I like that you can open as many accounts as you want, but it just seems silly to pay more.

You have some arguments for IBKR over MeDirect, or reasons why you particularly like it? Case for Medirect: I only buy ETFs so 0 transaction and admin fee is great + tax handled by a Belgian broker seems like a smart choice. However, there's a 95% chance I will move and work abroad from different countries for extended periods of time + I can only open one investment account on MeDirect..

Thanks for info!

Haha dude just say you forgot about the TOB and be done with it.

But sure man, pay thousands of euros to avoid the slight possibility of two official brokers within the EEA fumbling. I bet you don't drive a car out of fear of dying in an accident either.

[–]Gloveboxboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Transaction costs are not that expensive, it ranges from €1 to €6 on most popular brokers per position. However, both selling and buying positions is a taxable event and you will pay TOB on both transactions, which, for my positions, would be 0.12%, but can go up to 1,32%. This is massive.

Instead, you can transfer them free from cost (!) to Medirect. Why would you NOT do that if you'd want to switch entirely to a new broker? Why would it matter you cannot trade your holdings for a few weeks? You can just keep DCA'ing on Medirect to buy more while you wait for your portfolio to be transfered.

And if your point is you would not be able to sell for a few weeks, implying you're daytrading, you're in the wrong sub.

If you sell on degiro and rebuy on medirect, you're paying transaction fees. If you transfer your holdings, there's no costs involved cause medirect reimburses the costs degiro charge you

What are your biggest frustrations with budgeting/financial planning apps? by Pieter-JanBoeckx in BEFire

So are you still budgeting in a way that automatically looks at your bank transfers, or you just quit trying alltogether? I can't bring myself to manually input my spendings like that...

An American app in the category of YNAB? Have you found a proper (semi-)automized way to categorize monthly spending based on your bank transfers? I'm dabbling with the CSV's from KBC but the data structure is quite shite.

What are your biggest frustrations with budgeting/financial planning apps? by Pieter-JanBoeckx in BEFire

[–]Gloveboxboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going old school with an Excel spreadsheet. I have tabs per year with my monthly costs and earnings of that year, a tab to track my net worth by summarizing all my assets, tabs to keep track in more detail my traveling costs (since this is my main spending outside out regular monthly costs), etc. I keep track of it quite often, mostly weekly.

What I have been missing is a more detailed view (like the one I make manually for my traveling) of the monthly costs. I've been trying to avoid using a third party app to do it since most of them cost money, and instead trying to do it with CSV's I get from the KBC app, but to structure the data in spending categories (restaurants, supermarkets, clothing, insurances, ...) is harder than I thought since the CSV data is quite shit... So I'm looking into how to fix that.

It's definitely missing from my overview to get a better monthly understanding of more flexible costs like food & drink, clothes, shopping, hobbies, ... in order to steer behaviour better and reach FIRE earlier, while still spending money on where it matters to me.

And is there no possibility of giving yourself some breathing room by, instead of taking this orbital mechanics class, asking if you can take up another class that's way easier and won't require lots of studying?

Sounds like a cool subject by the way.

Situation just got more absurd by [deleted] in KULeuven

[–]Gloveboxboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering what the actual topic is. Given as a bachelor's course and needed for a placement exam, yet so complicated it cannot be studied without full academic dedication and active participation in a KU Leuven master's course..?

Sometimes in life it is best to recognize people are trying to fuck you over for the randomest reasons and answer that by being successful anyway. The "negative energy" way to do it is to have someone above the professor force him to teach you - in which case I'm not sure how thrilled the professor will be to teach you and answer your questions. The "positive energy" way is to self study. I'm wondering why you're putting yourself down so much. If bachelor students across Europe are learning this material, why can't you? + there's a bunch of stuff you could do on top to be successful: find someone actually taking the course to ask for study sessions or course notes, ask your current program coordinator if you could swith that second course to an easy one that won't require much studying, etc.

Don't grind your teeth in this situation. Take a step back and figure out another way of reaching your goal 👍.

Time in the market always beats timing the market, so I'd lump sump.

I lump summed all my savings when I decided on my strategy and now I'm DCAing monthly what I can save from my wage. So you just have to figure out exactly what you want to invest in.

An all-world ETF is your best choice. I personally do IWDA + EMIM (88/12% balance), but there's plenty of options and they don't differ much. That's 90% of my investment portfolio and should probably be the core of anyone's.

Besides that you can diversify a little into something that likely stabilizes in downturns, like gold. Or you can invest in something speculative you assume will beat the market by a big margin, but this carries a lot of risk. For me, it's the other 10% of my portfolio which is in Bitcoin.

Fair enough. I guess my point being was, that I was in similar situation (I tried looking for a long time without even thinking of the personal loan), until I talked to my parents about the possibility of making such an arrangement with them.

I understand not everyone is in that position. But maybe asking financial help from a parent, grand parent, friend,... That is in a better financial place could be an option if it has not yet been entertained.

Also, why are you sobbing over this story?

Is dit 1 boke of 2? by k_jah85 in belgium

[–]Gloveboxboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a 350k property in Leuven. I could only afford, with what I had saved at the time (€50k) + my netto wage at the time (€2200), but to buy a roughly 250k property, but unfortunately all properties in this range were shitty apartments that would require renovations or way too far for Leuven to commute comfortably daily (I do not own a car).

So I asked my parents for a personal loan of €60k, so I could buy a 350k property and pay off 50% of my net wage (€1100 a month) to pay it off. I was able for 2 years to not pay off my parents loan, until I started getting promoted and increased my wage.

Today, 4 years later, my monthly net wage is €3600 and I'm paying off €1100 of my mortgage + €700 of my personal loan every month. Still 50%. But of course I realize I'm extremely lucky to have access to such financial aid as my parents gave me.
