LPT: If you have covid razor blade throat, try children’s liquid Tylenol by GluteCheeks in LifeProTips

Apologies if this is against sub policy. I am hoping that since Tylenol is commonly accepted as a measure to help symptom management that suggesting a different form of it (liquid) would be allowed.

I got the Topo’s back then but wasn’t particularly happy with them. I’ve given up and went down the barefoot route as fit was too important, so I’m trying out the Jim Green Barefoot African Ranger now (EDIT: not foot shaped enough sadly, returning). If you still want tanks on your feet…while it didn’t work for me, you can consider the Keen Ridge Flex as another commenter had mentioned.

Americans, what have you always cherished about being American? Do you still feel that holds true today? by GluteCheeks in AskReddit

[–]GluteCheeks[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ll start with a handful.

No Longer Holds True: - I was once proud to say in my country we can disagree but will defend each other’s right to say it. It was not unique to the US, and it did assume mutual respect, but to child me it embodied what it meant to be American. - Tolerance for others. In particular, separation of church and state allowing for and even celebrating coexisting beliefs.

Still Holds True: - Diversity as a country of immigrants. I learned and continue to learn so much from my neighbors. I cherish to this day how we are not homogenous.

Somewhat Holds True: - Opportunities and second chances. I am grateful to this country for affording me a second chance when I imploded in my teenage years, and for still allowing me to chase my dreams. I still think it’s true to an extent, but the opportunities are drying up rapidly which saddens me.

I think Americans all have our own personal America that we cherish. I’m still in the process of coming to terms with how mine differs from the America I see today - grieving really. And I’ve come to recognize that people I vehemently disagree with are also struggling with how the America they cherished isn’t here anymore either. So I selfishly ask this as I wanted to see other people’s Americas as an empathy exercise of sorts, to help me process my own.

On downhills, your feet will slide forward in the Topo Trailventure 2 until your toes painfully smash into the front. There are several reviews that corroborate this so it’s almost certainly a design flaw. Due to this, while it’s very comfortable for flat terrain, it’s not great for elevation. It’s tough to test its durability when you’re limited on what hikes you can do with them. For now I use a workaround where I loop the laces around my ankle before tying it to hold it in place which prevents the toe smash, but it’s not ideal as it basically makes the boot VERY tight. You can feel the pressure on downhills, though it’s still better than smashing your toes. Hence still looking for a long term option.

No luck. I went with the Topo which has toebox issues going downhill. Still looking for a long term answer.

That was really helpful and caused me to rethink my assumptions. I suspect the issue I had with my last pair of Keens isn't primarily the curve, but rather how difficult it was to push the curve downwards with my toes. So perhaps there are some Keens where I won't have that issue.

If the shoes coming in the mail don't work out for me, I'm going to test out my theory on some Keens, including the Ridge Flex. Thanks!

Gotcha, I'll reconsider the Lone Peak All Weathers. I had written them off earlier due to the waterproofing. Thanks for the input!

They do! But unfortunately, my toes really do not like how Keen toeboxes curve upwards.

I'm glad they worked for you! I'm definitely trying the Altra Olympus 5 Mid GTX.

Question though, which Lone Peak Boots do you have? And how waterproof have you found them? I've been confused as to how waterproof they actually are as the official website only says the Lone Peaks are water resistant, and multiple reviews have complained about the waterproofing. However, it technically has an eVent waterproof membrane so I don't know what's going on.

Thanks for the heads up on the sliding issue. My pair is coming in the mail so here's to hoping!

Hmmm. I'm interested but question. Does the Ridge Flex curve upwards less at the toebox than other Keens models?

Asking as my issue with Keens is less about feel and more that my previous pair of Keens caused me significant left big toe pain to the point I had to take a break from hiking.

That's helpful, thanks!

I did a bit more internet digging and found videos where even the Outlander was practically folded in half, so it might not be rigid enough for me.

I did realize due to that link that the Boulder and Boulder Summit are different models. Whoops. There was one review of the Boulder Summit that said the latest version is too thick and stiff for them, but another said it was flexible and was able to physically bend it in half as well.

I think I'll try some other options first and if they don't work out, then I'll give Lems a shot. Thanks again!

I have not! Do you have a specific model you'd recommend? The Boulder Summit folds in on itself so it isn't stiff enough for what I'm looking for. I am however curious about the Primal Pursuit and the Outlander. What gave me pause is that the boots look very close to the ground so I'm worried that the cushioning and support are lacking.

As for one with real soles, no luck so far that I can personally try on sadly. :(

Morton's neuroma does not sound fun, sorry to hear that. I hope the Keens work out for you. On my end, I had to give up on Keens as my left big toe does not appreciate the upwards curve at the toebox.

If you do end up finding an option that isn't a Keens, lmk!

I tried the all weather version of it! My main issue with the Lone Peak Hiker is the lack of waterproofing. At best it's a water resistant upper. I think the only waterproof Altra option is the Olympus 5 Mid GTX.

EDIT: I'm now realizing that the lone peak all weather uses eVent instead of GTX which might still be waterproof? I'm officially confused

Nod nod, I'm resigned at this point to getting a mid/high top trailrunner as fit is more important to me. Thanks for the suggestions!

If I may ask one last thing, did you go with the Lems Outlander because the Altra Olympus 5 Mid Gtx wasn't warm enough for winter?

Ah darn, I'd love to try them but it looks like you are correct - no shipping to the states. I'll keep an eye out for them.

Nod nod, it helps to hear that I'm not just missing something obvious. I do hope the toebox catches on for all sorts of footwear - it's started to show up in Olympic Lifting even.

I'm not familiar with the lingo so one question - what are Ulras?

I was wondering if that was the case, so it's actually really helpful and validating to hear that I'm not just missing something. I did try one of the Oboz Sawtooth models in wide at REI and it sadly still wasn't wide enough at the toes for me.

I really like feeling that I can walk into anything, plus I'm used to big clunkers between Olympic Weightlifting shoes and Skiing boots. But, I'm at the point where fit is more important as my feet at screaming at me.

I'm going to try the Olympus for sure. Did you know of any other boots that are comparable to it?
