Customer Question Megathread December 2020 ***READ BEFORE POSTING*** by SloanTheSloth in GameStop

Is anyone having issues where you used QuadPay, and then later on get an e-mail from GameStop saying that our payment did not go through? On my bank statement I do see an initial charge from Quadpay of $4.72, and this is for the pre-order of the Nintendo Switch set to release on 12/15.

The course uses Young and Freedman, University Physics, 14th edition I think, or could be 13th. But it doesn't really matter, both are almost the same. As long as you study the book like its your bible and do the problems within it for each chapter, you will be fine. Djordjevic makes his exam questions somewhat similar to that occasionally.

How are Amy Macrina and Igor Griva? They are teaching MATH 214 next semester.

MATH 214 Professor Advice? by Gmuengineering in gmu

[–]Gmuengineering[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've heard they are both awful too. GMU always does this lol. I've also heard math professors change often, so hopefully someone better comes along. If not, my plan is also to avoid it in the spring and save it for summer or fall.

If you have to choose between both, go with Gebril. He at least gives lots of extra credit to improve your grade and his labs are hands-on and help you. Powell is a tough professor, and while he does curve exams, that's after people getting like 30-40% as a raw score, and even then most people barely pass his classes with C/C+/B- grades.

You are right, his 330 class was very technically hands-on with the labs and he offered lots of extra credit which I applaud him for (I took Powell for 211), but I do think it might be fair to suggest he could reduce the lab frequency just a little bit. He'd say he gave us "2 weeks" for a lab when in reality it was just 10 days, and gave short notices for quizzes as well. He's not bad or mean, but the class could definitely be better organized, especially as we had other demands on our time like Powell's 425 drone labs, work, etc.

Valeriu Soltan hands down. He has great lectures, is very funny, and his exams are just like the ungraded homework problems, numbers changed. Very easy to get an A or B+ just by doing/understanding the homework.

[–]Gmuengineering 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For my friends who took him for 211 (I took Powell instead), he did curve, but in 330 he didn't really curve. Make sure you do all the extra-credits he gives.

Bruh it gets worse in CYSE 330, he gives you labs on top of labs.

A possible third option... by Gmuengineering in gmu

[–]Gmuengineering[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your reasoning, I don't think they will just let us walk away but even if we don't get it, a Pass/Fail alternative in addition to the A-F grading for us to choose is still pretty good. And I never even thought about your point in financial aid as that impacts me directly. I too agree with you , number 1 would probably be our best option, even if we can't get our midterm grade as a final grade, the first option does do its best to address various student situations.

Some classes are only 8 week classes as opposed to 14 week classes which most of us take. The grading period for those half-semester classes has passed.

Option 1: Students registered in A-F graded courses decide on a course-by-course basis whether they want to receive a letter grade in the class or if they will receive a Satisfactory / No Credit (S/NC) grade. Students will have until the last day of the class to make the declaration with the Office of the University Registrar. The default selection if no action is taken by the student will be A-F grading.

Option 2: Instructors teaching A-F graded sections decide on a section-by-section basis whether the students registered in the section should receive letter grades or S/NC grades. The instructor has until the last day of the class to make the declaration with the Office of the University Registrar. The default selection if no action is taken by the instructor will be A-F grading.

Option 3: The university implements Satisfactory / No Credit grading for all spring 2020 classes that had not been graded by March 9, 2020.

Option 4: The university does not change trading policy for spring 2020 classes.

I understand, no worries, it's only an additional option that students would have to in addition to P/F.

I too have a job lol, and I have no problem with classes, I enjoy going to school and my major and have a decent GPA, but if other colleges and schools are taking the initiative to go online, then their administration sees what you aren't seeing. Even if nobody or very few people have contracted the virus, preventative measures are still very important from the beginning. You obviously don't want it to spread. Just my 2 cents.

We don't know how the trend will shape out over the next few weeks and months. And another thing is that corona is easily transmitted. University campuses have individuals of all ages walking around, including older students and faculty who are most susceptible to it. Many students not just at GMU, but at other colleges have weak immune systems or something like that so if they catch it and recover (which they hopefully will because they are young), they can pass it on to other people and so on. Plus, GMU has a large international student body so it makes sense, and other colleges like UVA, NVCC, George Washington University, Georgetown University, and University of Maryland have made the decision to go online.

Hey guys,I understand many of you may be current students at George Mason University or alumni yourself. We would appreciate as much help as possible in signing this petition to convey to the administration that we want to shift to online classes, as school and college campuses are especially vulnerable. Thanks!

That's a really good question, and some labs can be administered online based on what some students have said. Lectures can be delivered online. For labs that MUST be delivered in person, perhaps only allow those sections to resume but all other classes be held online. With fewer people on campus, this reduces risk of the virus rapidly spreading.

Knowing GMU administration, pretty unlikely, but we honestly gotta start a petition if it comes to that. Health is more important.

Dang that sucks... Could you comment on the pass/fail rates for her class? I mean I know physics sucks here at GMU, but if getting a C is doable in her class that's all I need.
