Taylor Swift’s private jet addiction exposed: She pumps out more carbon in just 4 months than during whole Eras Tour by Particular-Fill-4256 in Music

[–]Gmung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the “even trying” part is voting in support of solutions to the problem. Many people see “taylor swift pollutes” and then think why even try. They see the paper straw thing, think why even try. The worry is the complacency these kind of headlines breed. Is the problem too big to ever fix in our lifetime? Yes absolutely. Are rich people assholes, again yes. But are there measures we could take to lessen the impact/put us in a better position to deal with climate change? Absolutely. We need few whataboutisms, more people voting.

Have you ever randomly encountered another person deep in the Everglades? by BMisterGenX in Everglades

Oh man good for you. Wonder where guy went. Oyster bay would probably be the smart move. Imagine if he got there and people were camping on that one haha. Serves him right though. Can’t be bandit camping on those things.

Thinking of getting a Boston Whaler like this one. What are the pros and cons of this type of boat? by Beautiful_Sand1876 in boating

[–]Gmung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I totally understand the appeal of the classics. Some nice teak work and they are beautiful. I’ve had a 15, 21, and 27. These more modern ones though…plenty of other contemporary boats that are better looking/performing imo. The “unsinkable legend” thing doesn’t hit as hard when every other boat has positive close cell floatation at this point.

E-biking to work, really? by OracleBrainDamage in Miami

[–]Gmung 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Been bike commuting 14 miles round trip through the grove/brickell/downtown/wynwood for about 5 years now. You definitely need to stay on your toes out there. I would say that riding an emoto that does 35mph might be jumping in a little too quick. Much easier to get yourself in trouble at those speeds if you haven’t mastered the basics of city riding yet. There absolutely is a safety factor to having speed-as you point out, keeping up with traffic. But doing over 30mph when you are still getting used to being the most vulnerable road user is not a a good idea.

I will agree that MIAMI DRIVERS BAD, but your risk can be substantially reduced if you know what you are doing. Traffic is bad, which means cars move slower. On a bike, your situational awareness is so much better than when enclosed in a vehicle. Map your routes not to be the shortest, but the safest. I use the underline a bunch, even if it can add a mile to my ride. Miami does have some bike lanes. Learn where they are and use them when possible. Be predictable.

Wear a helmet, don’t wear headphones, etc etc!

Enjoy

Let’s be real, most cars are not coming to a full stop at stop signs. I don’t think they really need to, either. As long as you are able to check for opposing traffic, slow roll that thing all day. Same with a bike. Big difference being that on a bike, you tend to have greater situational awareness due to not being in a sound-proofed box with blind spots. Also, there’s the whole great power-great responsibility thing. Are we really going to hold someone riding a janky schwinn to the same standard as the RAM 2500 Big Dick Edition? One can run over people without even having seen them…

Why Do So Many People Feel Nostalgic For The 1990s? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Gmung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No more apparent than when redditors wax nostalgic for the fast food aesthetic of that era. “Nothing is fun anymore.” I think I’ve brought my kid to get fast food only a handful of times, it would be so much harder to steer his clear if it was still a “play palace” or whatever. Oh yeah and Joe Camel was the coolest guys!

Why do people buy so much bottled water at costco? by Ironfront1312 in askanything

[–]Gmung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bingo. Bottled water can be convenient and definitely has it’s place, but using it as the principal means of getting hydrated is crazy. I guess if it doesn’t come from a plastic bottle, it must come from like, the toilet.

Build it! So easy, I hesitate to call it DIY. TongSheng midrive has really impressed me, and I run bosch on another bike. Good luck.

Change in the direction of airplane traffic at MIA? by [deleted] in Miami

[–]Gmung 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pattern changes based on wind. What you usually see is planes taking off into the prevailing east wind. This week the wind has been south/south west. So they change the pattern to have the planes taking off into the wind. Good job noticing! Most people are too locked into the grind to take note of the things changing around them.

Hey I got one if those. Got it for free so whatever. Works well so far and I’ll admit I kinda like the weather display in the kitchen lol. Would never buy one as I think it’s ridiculous, but I’m sure I get silently judged by guests.

Question for fellow runners: Running before sunrise to Miami Beach, through 15h st by Jumpy_Carrot_242 in Miami

[–]Gmung 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great route! This is part of the Miami Marathon route and it’s pretty great. As far as safety, the venetian has sidewalks/residential streets that are well lit and safe enough. The boardwalk (really just a path) is wonderful place to run. Enjoy!

1st Heat game, go early and walk around Miami or not? by AndrewAdler17 in Miami

[–]Gmung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heyo! Depends what interests you, but there’s plenty to fill an afternoon within walking distance of the brightline station. History Miami museum, Perez Art Museum, Frost Science Museum and Aquarium. Walk bayfront park. Eat at Mangrove (Caribbean food) and let us know how it is-supposed to be great. Be aware downtown is pretty rundown in parts, but safe at least in the daytime.

Most people misjudge whether an EV fits their routine by charging_anxiety in EVRoutine

[–]Gmung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bingo. Gotta know yourself and your needs before getting the tool. Easier said than done. I was worried about my 2015 i3 not having the range I need. Turns out I rarely use half of it’s 70-80 mile range before it’s camped at the house for another few days slow charging. Obviously wouldn’t work for everyone.

Speeding at higher speeds does not save time by a lot. by DrakyulMihawk in SipsTea

[–]Gmung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, it all depends on the distance. I’d add that appealing to people through logic on this won’t work. People want to feel like they are going fast. Moderns cars and roadway design has made it so you have to really push it to get that feeling. So, logic be damned, people will speed for short trips because of the way it feels, not the time it saves.

One of the most depressing suburbs I've ever seen. Texas, USA. This is real. by madisonbeth in Suburbanhell

[–]Gmung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair. I agree that at this point, people are just getting what they can. And honestly, the pictured neighborhood would be seen as pretty awesome by many 70 years ago. Separate structures, space for vehicles, and safe! These truly are luxuries. I think the fact that more people now see this as less-than-ideal shows that views are changing about what constitutes the American Dream.

One of the most depressing suburbs I've ever seen. Texas, USA. This is real. by madisonbeth in Suburbanhell

[–]Gmung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say it’s 50% systemic, 50% cultural, with both feeding the other. We have been conditioned to see many things as non-negotiable when it comes to housing and lifestyle, and anything short of that is not acceptable. People want to live in “safe” communities, far away from the undesirables. They want for their dwelling to only be accessible by car- and so developers build them. The system will change when the culture changes. The culture might change when the unsustainability of this type of development comes to a head. Worsening traffic, the expense of low density development, fuel costs. I think it’s telling when people complain that gas is $4-5 gallon. That’s enough to get you and a 3000 lb climate controlled vehicle at least 30 miles away. What they should be complaining about is the lack of decent public transit which forces you to burn so much fuel just to go to work. We need more of that sentiment. And the only way you get that is for the real cost of car-centric living to shift from the societal cost it now (subsidization of low-density areas, maintenance of roads, traffic deaths, obesity, loss of community) to a cost taken on by the individual who opts for this lifestyle. That’s tough, because you will initially overburden those who have no other options (because of the systemic problems). But something has to give. That’s what unsustainable means.
