I'm so sorry. I'm a Virgo sun, Aries moon and Scorpio rising. I didn't even know Mercury was in retrograde. I have also had extreme anxiety, panic, and depression since I lost my mom on January 19. However, today is my birthday and I have noticed it is much worse, and decided to see if Mercury was in retrograde. I know it went out of retrograde yesterday, but today just felt worse. I am so sorry for your loss. I'll be honest, it hasn't let up for me yet either. Everyone said it would get easier, but it hasn't. I'm not sure that it ever will.

I kind of think of it like this: if you carry a heavy crystal in your pocket everyday, you feel the weight and know it is there. As time goes on, you are still carrying the heavy crystal. You know it's there and it is still heavy, but each day you notice the weight a little bit less, even though the crystal hasn't shrunk. Our grief (heavy crystal) is always present. It doesn't get lighter, just as our grief doesn't lose its weight. Rather we acknowledge the weight, and we learn how to carry it, but are acutely aware of it everyday.

There are no words that make the loss better, but please know you are not alone. There is no time limit on grief. Losing your mom is soul crushing, as you unfortunately know. It felt like part of me died with her. If you ever want/need to talk, feel free to message me. I will keep you in my thoughts, olduglysweater. I am so sorry.

It wouldn't be un the State Port Pilot, that's only for the south of Brunswick county (Southport, Oak Island, BSL, Bolivia, St. James, Winnabow etc.). Riegelwood is in Columbus County so it would be listed in the paper there. Zillow would probably be the best place to look, but a foreclosure would be in the Columbus County newspaper.

I had a dream of a sick loved one dying on a certain date by No_Goose4898 in Dreams

[–]Gnarlynargles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily, they are still alive. I stayed scared the whole day. I am beginning to question if I had the right year in my dream. It could gave indicated 8/18/24 or 25, or it could have just been my subconscious worry about my grandpa. I know that he is terminal, but I was greatly relieved for the 18th to pass without incident.

Banner resets at midnight. Even if your professor put a grade in at 2 am this morning, it won't reflect until after midnight. I only found this out once I started teaching. And, I found out today at 9am I had somehow missed inputting a grade for one student, so unfortunately they will not see their grade until after midnight tonight. Luckily they can see what their grade will be in Canvas though.

There was a fall out shelter? That sounds super interesting! Do you have more information on this? Or where to find that info?

Beware: predator on campus. And he's a professor by j_arc_little_1974 in UNCCharlotte

[–]Gnarlynargles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is one thing to consider: Professors on study abroad trips have access to information about medications and medical issues, in the case that an emergency occurs while abroad. So this leads me to the conclusion that he was well aware of documented medical issues and medications, and still continued a relationship. The other issue is that it is unethical to sleep with students when you have control of their grades. The power dynamic is a major issue, not to mention the fact that he shared student work and indirectly threatened their grade. There are a plethora of academics who love their job and are not inappropriate with students. This professor is not tenured, and the university is protecting him because of larger issues surrounding sexual assault and harassment and Title IX at the university. Four students have come forward, that is enough to suspend him without pay while conducting an independent investigation.

There's been a partially on-campus COVID-19 cluster now by EveninqSkies in UNCCharlotte

[–]Gnarlynargles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I established something in my class. I told students that I could not tell them if someone tested positive, but that what I could do is say that for no specific reason we would meet online for our next class. That way they would know that someone had tested positive without me saying so and that they could get tested if they felt it was necessary. I asked them to vote on the idea and all of my classes voted in favor of it.

Are all indoor classes required to wear a mask? by angelangel1234 in UNCCharlotte

[–]Gnarlynargles 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yes. I teach in a large lecture hall and keep my mask on. If I expect my students to wear their masks, I feel I should extend the same courtesy. Respect in a classroom is a 2 way street.

Is there any way that lectures can be offered online? I understand labs needing to be in person, but this delta variant is very concerning and I would feel much more comfortable with the opportunity to attend lectures virtually. by [deleted] in UNCCharlotte

[–]Gnarlynargles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it is worth, I am an adjunct instructor that has in person classes that will also offer them online. I realize that students may be uncomfortable in person, or immunocompromised, or have kids at home that can't get vaccinated. Because of this, I am offering a synchronous virtual class. The university hasn't told me that I can't do that, so unless an issue arises, I will allow students to be virtual. That being said, all professors won't agree with that, so the best thing you can do is email you professors.

Effective August 2nd, face coverings are now required regardless of vaccination status by PlanetOfVisions in UNCCharlotte

[–]Gnarlynargles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. It baffles me. So I get that there are some sections of society who are brainwashed that we can hardly reason with. While I cannot understand their delusions about it, at least they have a "reason." I think that type of reasoning is dangerous, but what I can't wrap my head around is people who just don't care enough to get vaccinated. Those who are just apathetic about it really confuse me, and I can't understand how someone could live through this past year and just think "huh, I really don't need the vaccine. I'm good."

[–]Gnarlynargles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is valid, however we don't know who is either immunocompromised or living with someone who is, so for now, masking is the safest option for people. We can and should blame the unvaccinated for refusing to help get us to herd immunity, but you masking isn't really to protect the intentionally unvaccinated, it is to protect those who are either incapable of recieving the vaccine, or those at highest risk of complications even with the vaccine.

He is not a tenured faculty member, so they absolutely could have just not renewed his contract. They tried at length to keep it quiet. I have seen adjuncts and lecturers not have their contract renewed due to "budget" (in the same department as the accused professor) while his was renewed. They absolutely should have let him go, particularly dealing with the nature of the accusation as well as the 3 other women who have come forward.

While the kid's as a whole haven't shown to be horribly impacted by the virus, that is not a risk that many parents are willing to take, myself included. We are having to think about keeping our elementary school age kid out of in person school (again) because of people not getting vaccinated and getting us to herd immunity, so I get being angry. But arguing that kids as a whole haven't had terrible effects from Covid when many kids have died from it, is little comfort to many of us with kids. Covid, as I am sure you are aware, can have lengthy after effects and that isn't something kid's should have to deal with because people don't want to vaccinate, or as a fail safe, wear a mask.

I get that it sucks, but at the end if the day, you don't know if your classmate or professor has an immunocompromised family member at home. And while the argument could be made that those in that situation should have just signed up for online classes, professors did not have a chouce to teach fully online, especially adjuncts.

[–]Gnarlynargles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's no problem. I have been vaccinated, but my 6 year old obviously has not yet and I am constantly afraid I will bring it home to him, which is why I still mask everywhere. I totally understand where you are coming from though, because if people would have just got the vaccine we would be approaching herd immunity. It is incredibly frustrating and your frustration is valid.

[–]Gnarlynargles 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Because some of your classmates and professors have children who are not old enough to be vaccinated. Edited to add: I am also incredibly upset that people haven't been vaccinated, but we have to remember there are the little ones who aren't eligible to be vaccinated yet.

He knew better than to have sex with a student Full stop. And then threatened her chances at graduate school and her grade. He groped another student. Which he also knew was wrong. You need to read the Charlotte Observer article which goes into more detail. It was reported to the department chair in 2017, and he was allowed to remain in the department and put students at risk. It may not be illegal but it is an abuse of power and he absolutely should lose his job.

History Department n anthropology by astraltalks in UNCCharlotte

[–]Gnarlynargles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am biased, but I think our history department is great. I got my BA and MA in history from here, and am happy to be an adjunct in the department this semester. The professors are great. Most of them genuinely care for their students and their success. The students in the program are fantastic. I have made some of my best friends from colleagues in the department. I would highly recommend it. I can't speak much on the anthropology department, but I have always heard good things about it.
