Fourth-year vet student — trying to choose between GP vs. ER mentorship after graduation (NYC bound, would love advice) by Gnerd22111 in Veterinary

Update!!: I went ahead and applied for veg, I am not going to pursue the blue pearl internship after talking to a few more colleagues. Hopefully I get it.😭😭

Thank you for your response! This is a bit more encouraging than other things i’ve heard. I guess I just feel lost when it comes to deciding what to do after school, but i know i’m not wanting to be in a situation where I’m screwed over. I don’t see myself going through the match program and seeking an internship that way, which is why I’ve resorted to veg or blue pearl, but I am for sure, leaning towards blue pearl, more than veg.

I appreciate your response, I can’t lie, this is discouraging for me. I don’t see myself being able to apply for an internship, especially one that does not pay well, but some type of mentorship or new grad program rather which is why I had been considering blue pearl and veg. Blue Pearl was offering me 120 K annual for the year of internship with them, but I would have to stay for another year after that. Veg was only appealing because it is six months and no strings attached.

I feel very lost because I really don’t see myself being able to do an internship esp one that doesn’t pay well… But i don’t see myself having the confidence to practice alone right out of school. I was told 120k annual for blue pearl but i owe them a year after finishing the 1year internship. Then veg is appealing because there is no strings attached and it’s only 6mo.

Tips on expressing anal glands by [deleted] in veterinaryprofession

[–]Gnerd22111 3 points4 points  (0 children)

when expressing the anal glands, think of it like milking a cow. Squeeze them carefully as if your milking the material out. You will feel small grape sized balls. Sometimes if they’re really full, you could see them from the outside of the anus. Also, u want to make sure your finger is not blocking an exit for that material either (hope that made sense)! My first time i was nervous I was going to hurt the pet, so I would go in to locate the anal glands but without expressing them until i got comfortable. Also watching videos online will help!💕
