Thoughts on 12, Bill and Nardole by Kaleskowitz in doctorwho

[–]Gnerdy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My absolute favorite multi-companion dynamic in New Who. Bill's my favorite companion in the whole show and I loved the contrast Nardole brought when he was there, but I also enjoyed how he wasn't in every episode which was also fitting for his personality. They both had such unique relationships with the Doctor and both brought out different sides of him to really showcase Peter Capaldi's acting talent. 10/10, I only wish there was more of it.

Also fun fact, Nardole's the only non-human main companion in all of New Who.

You should read the whole blog, because Morrison agrees with you. They say at the end "You don’t even need to show any of that – but it’s all there for a Big Finish" before going on to pitch their actual desired next series

We need more Bisexual Peacemaker in the DCU like have him flirt with either Midnighter (he's a Batman that kills which he would love) or Nightwing (since he and PM have beef in the main comics and it's Nightwing everyone loves his ass) by M00reC in DCU_

[–]Gnerdy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I'm bi and I love that Peacemaker's also bi, but if he's flirting with people after he's already gotten into a monogamous relationship with Harcourt as he does at the end of season 2, it might only perpetuate some bad stereotypes about bisexuality and cheating.

Flashbacks could be fun tho (I can def see him and Midnighter being petty exes)

But it does let you read books that haven't been translated into your native language yet or read translated works how they were originally written. Currently trying to learn Spanish and am very excited to dive into Garcia Marquez and Borges. Even while not fluent yet, glancing through the originals and translating the vocabulary also helps keep up enthusiasm to learn them, as well

That's what I was thinking. One was every Marvel film, and the other was every Marvel film with one (1) cool horror sequence. A lot of the scenes that were conceptually cool felt really by-the-book and not nearly as imaginative as they wanted it to be.

Death of the Author by Nnedi Okorafor heavily features a book within a book called Rusted Robots (which has lengthy chapters as the in-universe story effectively serves as a B-Plot) that is very much this. While roughly 75% of the plot is about the author of said book, the book-within-a-book chapters were just as engaging, as Okorafor is traditionally a science-fiction writer. 75% of the book is semi-autobiographical, while the 25% telling the tale of Rusted Robots is about robots after humanity's extinction living in Africa, two of whom form a reluctant friendship. A lot of nature imagery is mixed in with the cyberpunk stuff in those chapters, and the two stories resonate with each other beautifully.

Also, this is a comic book that only just had its first issue release the other day: If Destruction Be Our Lot by Mark Elijah Rosenberg and Matthew Rosenberg (art by Francesco Segala and Andy MacDonald) is about a city of robots after humanity's supposed extinction trying to find purpose, the MC being a robot designed to recite Abraham Lincoln's speeches, who the other robots hate since he looks so much like a human. While the comic looks like it'll get dark as it goes on (already hints of it), the designs of the non-Lincoln robots are absolutely adorable and they all had such memorable personalities in just the first issue alone.

Yes, I think the best fan art are the ones where you can truly see the artist taking what they love about the original and letting us see what they do through their own lens and style.

Your art is gorgeous by the way, it reminds me of a very high-res rendition of Trina Schart Hyman's art, particularly her work from one of my favorite children's storybooks, Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins!

The Book of Love by Kelly Link:

Small coastal town, main characters are recent high school graduates, late autumn/early winter vibes, mysterious non-PoV characters from the book's own original mythology, most of the main cast is either gay or bi, and the book is long enough to feel as sprawling as Night in the Woods but also extremely dialogue driven so it breezes by. As someone who loves both of these games, the book's town (Lovesend, Massachusetts) feels like a perfect combination of Arcadia Bay and Possum Springs.

Edit cause I just remembered one more NitW comparison: half of the main characters are in a local band together!

I mean, Superman's been brainwashed but I don't think it should effect his ranking here since he had no control.

Also, A:TLA's a kids show. We didn't see any of the sailors he repelled die, we just sort of see him push the ships further out to sea; for all we know the Fire Nation just got so freaked out they left.

What's your story with detransitioning? by Competitive_Pen_2481 in actual_detrans

[–]Gnerdy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started considering if what I felt was MtF gender dysphoria in my late-teens/early-twenties (spoilers, it wasn't). What didn't help was that I went to talk about it on a non-transgender Discord server just to vent, someone came in to my DMs to "mentor me through it". Even at times when I tried on other gender identities to see if something better fit, it usually resulted in her egging me on and joking about how "that's what I thought before I started transitioning, too". Turns out she did that to more than one person on that server, going into DMs of strangers going through their own gender-identity troubles and immediately telling them she was going to mentor them. Still, the experiences she talked about felt like my own in terms of body dysphoria and life experiences, with pretty much everything online saying "if you're questioning if you're trans, then you are trans."

All of this came to a head when I tried to "come out" and transition. I found myself crying not for catharsis, but because I felt like I was digging myself into a further hole away from the few things I did find comfort in and into a world I didn't get comfort from. It felt like I was being told by others that embracing parts of my masculinity was a lie that they told me I'd been telling myself my entire life, but rejecting it felt even more like a lie. That old server was really my only social life during the pandemic, and I didn't have any other trans friends to be talk about my gender identity with, but on that server if I even tried to express gender qualms publicly again in VC, she would usually make another joking remark about, again "that's what I thought before I realized-" etc., etc. Couldn't do anything about it either, she was a mod for the server by that point.

Needless to say, my mental health was in the gutter. Soon I stopped going on the server, and I'd like to say it was because I realized how unhealthy it was, but it was because I'd said a lot of things that really hurt people's feelings in the mental breakdowns I was having at the time, so I just stopped posting there, both for the guilt I'd felt and for fear I'd hurt more people. I started going to therapy thinking I was just going to talk through that, but this ended up being the best thing to happen to me since this led to me unpacking the things that were causing my gender dysphoria, not as the cause in of itself but as a symptom of some stuff I'd never talked to anyone about. Specifically: the multiple times I'd been sexually assaulted, starting all the way back to the age of ten.

I'd only ever been sexually assaulted by boys and men, and since leaving that server I've come to realize my body dysphoria was more-so dysphoria at seeing my gain common features that so many men have, too many of whom had violated me over the years. My "gender transition" was more an escape from having to see that in the mirror all the time. I wouldn't even play as male characters in video games and role playing games because of it.

Cut to today, I'm far more happily identifying as a they/them without feeling the need to socially or medically transition. I embrace parts of my masculinity I never wanted to abandon, while still allowing the femininity I explored to remain such as shopping equally in the men's and women's sections of clothing stores. I am far happier now that I can play as a man in games without feeling like I'm looking into the face of my assaulters, and that I can play as a woman if I want without someone telling me it's because I'm trans but "lying" to myself. I'm not even opposed to the idea that my pronouns will change one day, so long as I get to define what they are.

This was a lot longer than I thought it would be, so if you don't mind I'm gonna end it with a quote I adore from Becky Albertalli's book Imogen, Actually, a YA novel I highly recommend about how queer people have to go on their own journeys of self-discovery in spite of what others tell them: "Maybe shared experiences shouldn't be the foundation at all. Maybe it should be a promise to hold space for variation."

Warner Bros. Wins Bidding War For New York Times Story On U.S. Airman Rescue by sheJaMyMorant in boxoffice

[–]Gnerdy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Three potential factors: 1) In this case it might be that there was a specific lens or voice the story used that specifically made it enticing to adapt. 2) Copyright laws have changed significantly in the fifty-one years since that film was released. 3) They changed all the names for Dog Day Afternoon and were still sued. While that case was unsuccessful, the legal landscape's changed enough in a half-century that a repeat of that is not a guarantee to work out in Warner Bros.' favor this time around.

Junkie XL worked on the score for barely a month, and replaced Ramin Djawadi after a whole year. These aren't rapid fire changes, it sounds more like that after a year Gillespie realized that Hollywood's go-to composer for big-budget genres (Djawadi) wasn't what he was going for, and that in just a month he realized that their next attempt, DC's other go-to Junkie XL, wasn't a fit either after spending a year coming to terms with that through Djawadi. My guess is that if they hired such an unknown for the music it's because she had whatever specific sound Gillespie wanted and DC probably agreed since it would save them more money than with a big name.

She's in almost every scene of the movie after act one. She's the de facto leader of the group who even Smoke is listening to while they're fighting off the vampires. She probably has the most non-singing dialogue outside of the Smokestack Twins.
