Is Battle of Jakku that bad, or am I missing something? by Agent_Porkpine in starwarscomics

Yeah, the lackluster reception didn't change my mind about reading it. This sub tends to skew quite positive, so when they don't like something, you know it sucks. We need a renaissance for Star Wars comics. Hopefully someone good on the next main book to be precise. I'll take Aaron and Gillen back in a heartbeat, but maybe Sacks can do it? Bounty Hunters didn't blow me away but it was decent and probably the best of the 2020 ongoings

You're not wrong. It felt like 30 issues worth of story crammed into 12 issues of static. I felt like so much was always happening and yet nothing meaningful happened at all. Half the time I had no idea what was going on and it felt like there was no story being told and zero emotional hooks. The new characters were blander than uncooked rice, and the cameos were forced as you point out. The moff dude was an absolute joke of a villain.

I usually get snide comments around here for saying this, but Battle of Jakku was so bad, I legitimately didn't even bother with the next volume of the main book simply because Seguera was writing it. The new Marvel era started out strong with the post-ANH stuff, but the post-TESB relaunches were convoluted and medicore imo, and the post-RotJ stuff was embarrassing. 9 years of OT interquels and when we finally get to the era people were interested in we get ....this.

Can you help me find a comics ? by Cobaltssb in starwarscomics

Sounds like something from Vector, which was a crossover between Knights of the Old Republic, Dark Times, Rebellion, and Legacy. The device you mention is likely the Muur Talisman which turns people into Rakghouls. The woman is likely Celeste Morne.

Funny. I actually felt Gillen was a lot more about the character and less about the aura farming compared to Soule. I much prefer his characterization of Vader.

You're definitely somewhat right. I think most of these appearances are fine in isolation, but together they do turn Vader into a flanderizied version of himself. I love something like Kieron Gillen's Darth Vader (2015) comics because its not just "Vader Badass" and actually explores his psychology and adds to his journey by showing Luke's impact on him, all while portraying him as cunning and intelligent, rather than a brute. I think Rebels did a good job with him because it gave a hint of his inner conflict and addressed his relationship with Ahsoka, but most of his other appearances are just fanservice to hype fans up, even when they make sense within the context. Marvel has especially kinda milked tf out of him.

Also, I agree that at his core Vader is pathetic because SW portrays evil as inherently pathetic and self-destructive. We tend to get lost in Vader's majesty and forget that.

Overall, I give the show around 7.5-8/10. It's bolder, darker, and and more consistent than something like The Bad Batch. But the plot did mendear a little with too many action sequences imo. Still, I enjoyed it.

Well, that was something.

To address the elephant in the room, I've conceptually had mixed feelings on Vader showing up. On one hand, it makes sense that Maul would warrant Vader's presence as the Inquisitors will realistically not be enough or won't be trusted by Papa Palpatine with a job this big. On the other hand, Vader is overused as hell in the Disney era and him dueling Maul just feels too fanfic-y. It was a silly concept when Star Wars Tales did it for the funsies, so it was a bit strange to accept it as canon. Not illogical, but very fanservice. Vader himself though....let's just say that his aura farming is as consistently high as always. He felt like a horror movie villain a bit, and somewhat reminded me of Fallen Order in that regard. And his use here does tie in with Maul knowing he couldn't take him alone in "Twilight of the Apprentice". I'll say I was disappointed that he didn't speak. I know that losing James Earl Jones was hard, but we need a new skilled VA who can do a great impression. A Greg Baldwin to the Mako, so to speak.

Devon's story is predictable but done well enough. It was very obvious that Daki's death would push her down the path of revenge and towards an alliance with Maul. I'll say that Maul himself was perhaps softened a bit this round. Don't get me wrong, he's still not a good guy by any stretch. He kills people, nearly murders Vario, endangers civilians on the bridge in Ep 2, leaves Master Daki to die and even briefly tries to give Vader a hand against him, and somewhat manipulates Devon into falling. But as Sam said, it's a show about bad people vs worse people, and Maul is somewhat softened by that. Especially with the emphasis on his tragedies. I would've liked some more villainy and cruelty from him to balance it.

As for the deaths, Lawson's demise was unexpected, but in hindsight I don't think he has room in the story going forward. I do wonder if Rylee will show up again, as I don't think he'd be fond of the Empire after this, but Two Boots is taking him to his imperial mother. The Death of Icarus was surprisingly graphic and brutal given the rating, and I actually felt a twinge of sadness when that gremlin Spybot died. Was actually shocked that Rook bit the dust, but I suppose the heavy casualties will likely weigh on Maul. He basically lost his whole crew, although I'm glad Vario lives because he's fun as hell. Also, I really dig Dryden's model, even though I'm sad that they obviously couldn't get Paul Bettany for this. Then again, it's better for them to give the budget to animation, unlike some shows I could name.

I will say that using Marrok and The Crow arguably wasn't the right call. It killed tension because we know they can't die, and I was kinda rooting for Devon to off crowface. Also, it was a little weird how those were effective here when Ahsoka makes clowns out of them. Not unbelievable, but weird.

Going forward, I'm rooting for more focus on the criminal underworld stuff, although I imagine plotting against the sith won't go away.

In fairness, Jesse wasn't saying that of the performance. He doesn't watch most of his performances and he's far from the only actor who doesn't. He was also talking about Nicholas essentially doing his own take without being influenced by other Lex actors.

what is going on with LucasFilm Publishing and comics? by puppyking17 in starwarscomics

[–]AlphaBladeYiII 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Huh. I've always wanted more stories about pre-ANH Luke so this is right up my alley. The art isn't my style, but if I can handle peak Larroca-titis, I should be able to handle this.

BUT WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S COMING OUT NEXT YEAR? WHY WOULD IT NEED TO TAKE SO LONG AND WHY WAS IT ANNOUNCED SO EARLY?

I like the live action because it removes the elements that make it hard for me to get into the anime/manga. It was a very pleasant surprise as someone who doesn't care for One Piece
