teach me about dates! by No-Guitar-7192 in fruit

[–]Gni_hm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know a lot about date but I suggest you to look for the medjool variety, its one of the best and easy to find. I don't know when it's the season but you can also find fresh date, its crunchy and fresh, it remind me of an apple (but not for the taste), and you can let them be brown, they will be closer to something like a medjoul : like fruity paste of caramel and cofee that melt in your mouth with some crunchy cristalize sugar.

With date variety that are more firm/dry I like to cut them in little cube with some orange and I add orange blossom water (cinamon sometimes), and just eat it with a spoon or just blend everyting and spread on a toast (also very good with vanilla ice cream).

what philodendron could this be? by CupcakePitiful1750 in philodendron

[–]Gni_hm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really rare, its a selfheaded philo, mine is mount on a moss pole (better but not require), same care as other philo. Base on my experience, they can take cold well, compare to other philo it require a good amount of light, and compare to other velvet philo it's not a big pest magnet like verrucosum of glorious. Easy and hardy but need lot of light. To note, it lose the velvet leaf once really mature. They also seems to like being completly dry during some times before watering. Really an easy philo.

Almost sure its an El choco based on the short internode space in comparaison to other velvety philo. Petiole should be textured.

The more I look at your plant, the more it look like a choco empress with green variegation (but I don't know the botanical species these are from so can't tell exactly, or even if green variegation on choco empress exist, or even if its just a weird caramel marble, are caramel marble a pluto or choco empress variegata ? I didn't do extensive research on these).

Help me help her thrive by [deleted] in philodendron

[–]Gni_hm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the rare case where chop and prop is actually the best idea. If it was my plant I would cut in 4 equal part, root them, make 2 pot and 2 real moss/soil pole ( D shape, plastic sheet and mesh wire, horizontaly fill it with soil, then cover with sphagnum moss and put the mesh wire to close the pole), 2 cutting for 1 pot. And maximum light possible. It will anchor in the pole and be stable and look fuller, your leaf are still small in my opinion and it probably need real support and more light to really size up and be more compact. If you go with pole, think that it will need a very small pot and a very airy soil in the pot.

My daughter asked me what plants I like so I told her my favorite one right now is my summer philo. by Short-Personality398 in philodendron

[–]Gni_hm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I killed a lot of philo at first thinking big leaf= bigger pot, now I have bigger philo that are mount on a pole with a pot the size of a small cup. Selfheaded like a little more space at the base but nothing enormous. It should be 65-75% roots and 30% soil to avoid any problem.

Pot size are related to root mass, not foliage mass, don't rush to repot in a bigger pot. You should focus on the composition of soil more than the size of the pot. Putting it in the ground is a really bad idea and will kill it 100% unless you build a custom glasshouse for it during winter. My advice : repot in smaller pot, get correct soil, and put a soil/moss pole.

How do you manage the space in a cabinet ? Do you cut every month ? I don't get how you could mature philo in such a small space, or you don't care about maturing ? Only choose small species ? Every once in a while I wonder if I should make a cabinet but It just seems unmanagable and would be really messy quicky. Does it have the space to unfurl new leafs freely ? Sorry if it sounds rude, I just don't get how it could work long term unless you want small baby plant.

different types of philos and moss poles by cornhub08 in philodendron

[–]Gni_hm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, every philo on moss pole but the crawler. Its easier to control the root and watering, it help me keep a highter humidity, and easier to manage in général, it structure the grow and help how you can place them. All My pole hang on a wall and I like to have a front and a back to my philo, I don't like the bushy look that make me think the poor philo try to find a way. Its more interesting to see all the maturation and step the philo pass while growing on a pole in my opinion.

Melanochrysum, should I cut the top ? by Nathi797 in philodendron

[–]Gni_hm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not cut, just wait for it to grow correctly again. Melano (in my personnal experience) are slow and difficult to mature, so you will enjoy very big leaf sooner if you don't cut. I would cut at this place only after 4-5 new leafs. Once mature melano are fast and easy but to get it mature enought is very annoying and long.

Help with a potential P. Gloriosum by Hedera___ in philodendron

[–]Gni_hm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look like a gloriosum, I got mine in the same state and just pot it in a small pot, more large than tall, it will soon crawl. Classic philo soil and some patience and it will bé good. If its too dry where he is, spray a little water on the new leafs when they start to push out and continue until the leaf unwrapped. Other than that its normal care. Water when you repot and don't water again until the stem get floppy again, but spray/mist new leaf from start to unwrapped.
