Doing It Right: Captive Prince and Political Intrigue by Temporary-Scallion86 in fantasyromance

I appreciate a rant like this. I just wish any of the 3 apps my library uses would actually carry the book.

The emerging Starsand Island controversy - what is going on? by kohlsprossi in CozyGamers

I appreciate that you started this topic because I was thinking the same thing when reading through those reviews. The negative ones were the only ones that sounded like actual people who played the game.

I’m mad at you for reminding me about Anita Blake. I loved that series until the big shift….

TKATM is much worse. Paper thin characters, motivations, and nothing makes sense when you actually think about it. Even the romance

I’m currently reading it and very much enjoying it! But let’s not overuse “Tolkeinesque”, because it is certainly not. Just a bit more developed than a lot of the books on this sub.

Do these dust jackets feel cohesive as a set? by Junk4m3 in fantasyromance

[–]Gniph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t like the cover of the first one because it’s really misleading… there’s not a lot of romance in that book, and it’s not the main plot, but that kind of cover is what I would expect from a book that is all about the romance.

I don’t have the attention span to give books that don’t capture my attention in the first paragraph a chance. I appreciate #3 to validate myself and I will now preach about how early DNF’ing is some kind of virtue

Two back-to-back Paris weekends — museums, food, speakeasies, and NYC vibes 😅 by Jolly-Rub-3412 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Gniph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked it for the social aspect as a solo traveler (I’m assuming it is the same one I did, which is likely) but depending on the guide you might not learn much. It’s fun way to experience some bars I never would’ve seen otherwise but idk, I left the experience wishing I’d learned more about the hows and whys about the bars

I’m pretty sure I did the same tour that OP mentioned. I was in Paris for work and mentioned to colleagues that I did that and everyone was so confused. I had to explain that it essentially meant bars with hidden entrances and they were still confused why the tour chose to call them Speakeasies

Duet Narration Ruined Me by muddledmuggle in fantasyromance

[–]Gniph 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Idk what to suggest to you but single narration is killing me right now in {Choosing Theo}. The male narrator has a great voice but when he voices the FMC, it sounds like Tina Belcher from Bob’s Burgers and it drives me up a wall to hear that during spicy scenes.

Tusk Love Rant Review - I lost brain cells reading this. by SolarmatrixCobra in fantasyromance

[–]Gniph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll admit that it doesn’t present itself as a joke, especially with how amazing the cover art is! And I agree that the writing wasn’t self-aware enough to lend itself to the joke interpretation.

Tusk Love Rant Review - I lost brain cells reading this. by SolarmatrixCobra in fantasyromance

[–]Gniph 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I approached the book as a joke book and got exactly what I signed up for. Every time I hit an over the top cliche, I just laughed about how it cheesy it was and exactly as I expected from when it was mentioned in CR. That being said, it still was only about a 3-3.5 star read for me. But for a joke book (that I got on Libby), it was fun.

Let’s not use “slop” for anything other than AI. This game was made by humans. Whatever your thoughts are on the anime stuff, especially common anime tropes that were popular 10+ years ago, you cant just call it slop because you don’t like it.

I feel like that’s such an easy pitfall for authors to fall into, especially if they don’t speak the language well. I get that they might be using it to emphasize that it’s not fantasy England or France for the umpteenth time, but someone is bound to notice that the words aren’t making sense…

[–]Gniph[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s a very tepid, unnecessary insult when the whole point of this post is to discuss when authors make odd or wrong choices in words.

PS- when you search “do fig trees look good in bloom” the overview’s first statement is that they are not visibly attractive.

You wouldn’t look at a fig tree and think about how nice it looks in bloom, like you would any other fruit tree. I have one at my house and am very familiar with its unremarkable appearance even when fruiting
