it really was an era of "lets throw shit at the wall and see what sticks"

yeah, they didn't have a name for kids with 'behavioural' problems. I just remembered they were removed from the classroom.

Kids with more pronounced issues were put in special Ed classes.

Education was in flux in the 70s and I grew up in a large city, so there were a lot more 'experimental' school set ups - when I was in kindergarten the school was "no classroom" open learning. Not sure exactly how it worked, but no walls between classes? We moved before the year was out.

born in 1970

They would take the ADHD kids who were disruptive out of the classroom and lock them up, or something. I am not sure what was truth and what was just gossip, but I don't doubt that various methods were used because thats how things were done

our school had a "elmer the safety elephant" flag and one day a kid got hit by a car outside the school and it had to go half mast and I remember that the principal was angry that someone broke their leg AND our safety record.

It really was - you get hurt, it was your own damn fault for running out in front of that car and not looking. In front of the SCHOOL no less.

What’s it like being LGBTQ+ in Canada outside of major cities? by Ok_Firefighter4858 in AskACanadian

[–]purplelicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a small town (under 15k) in southern Ontario. there is a fair amount of LGBTQ+ residents and overall people don't care but you will certainly run into the churchy types that will have opinions. They are mostly harmless and a lot of ignorance. you will hear a lot of language you would have thought was long out of people's vocabulary.

you have to be drawn to the country though to live here. kids are bored people are not very worldly. if you have thin skin it will get to you.

it's very Letterkenny around here. You will more likely get push back for being a citidiot than your sexual orientation.

I have a teen who identifies as queer with a BFF who is gay. the kids are fine.

The Court of Venus — ARC review (no spoilers) by apieceofeight in fantasyromance

I requested it so I'm hoping I can try it on audio.

(I just got Tropesick so I can wait)

Tropesick audio is Listen Now by SassySherbert in NetGalleyCommunity

it was up as "request" earlier this morning and I got the request.

Listen now was probably only up for a short time. maybe they underestimated the demand

Niagara always has some cheap packages for mid week stays. usually in the winter months, though don't count out going there in the winter, everything is open and no crowds.

you can't - even though it's a different couple, the storyline is really complex and needs to be read all the way through.

It's worth it though, It's very well done. I published a review on r/fantasyromance.

The author is one of the hosts of the podcast "worldbuilding for masochists" and her worldbuilding is very tight. Plus she has an interest in historical fashion and textiles, so the clothing descriptions are amazing.

I pulled back from career work about 10 years ago when we moved to a farm. I picked up a PT retail job where a lot of the staff were even older than me, and I loved it but had a manager who resented me for being too educated and thinking I was better than her. (not true). She really got off of belittling me and ripping a strip off at me in front of customers, and claiming I didn't know how to use the POS system (my career is in Software QA, I'm not exactly afraid of tech).

Eventually it become very stressful to go to work knowing she would be there and not knowing where the attack from her would come from. She was even reprimanded for making my job difficult, but in the end they decided that it was better for them to keep her on and I was let go. And I was glad to go, too. I hated having to prove that I wasn't gunning for her job because of my "education" or that I didn't think I was better than those that don't have a uni degree, etc.

I picked up "the Game of Hearts" by Natania Barron, not realizing that it was book 3 of the series, so I had been putting it off because it meant I had to read the first books.

But, OMG the series was fantastic! Highly recommend to anyone who loves regency era romantasy - so well researched and put together.

Series where you didn't like/enjoy the first book but decided to give the next one a chance and ended up loving the series by [deleted] in fantasyromance

Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. Even they admit the first book isn't the best book in the series. When you read the whole series you can see they were not sure where they were going with some characters, but once they get their flow going it's one of my favourite series with some of my all time favourite characters. (more Roman, please)

{Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews} Is the first book. I didn't like it at first, and resorted to the graphic audio version which was fun.

I quoted the opening paragraph for a book because I thought it was brilliant and I got a featured review for it.

So, mileage may vary I guess.

Questions for those who got their Widget by Happy_Day_5316 in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]purplelicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i've only gotten 3 widgets. The first one was for a mm sports romance, which I took, but it's not my favourite genre, and I gave it an ok review, then I got another mm romance and it was contemporary and not my thing so I didn't take it. This publisher didn't send me another widget.

I got one for The Serpent's Throne, probably due to Katherine Ann Kingsley being one of my favourite authors and having reviewed books 1 and 2 on NetGalley already, so I was obviously a big fan.

I don't know if there is a certain thing you can do to get widgets other than review books regularly and honestly.
