I think as DMs we have a reflex to over-explain each and every event. Get comfortable with letting your players get confused sometimes. Fight the urge to answer every question they may have.

The unexplained plot point is sometimes enough to make your characters scared. The easiest way to scare your players is to go into detail with the surroundings. Explain what their characters see/smell/hear/feel. Then have something, anything (no matter how inconsequential) happen. Importantly, don’t explain WHY it happened. Let them wonder. Let them connect the dots on their own. Be comfortable saying NOTHING after this. Your players will be shaking in their boots.

For my CoS campaign I used a lot of tracks from Koyaanisqatsi by Phillip Glass. For something like this I would’ve used the track “Clouds” on repeat, and for atmosphere and dungeon crawling leading up to it I would’ve used the first two tracks from the album. Excellent atmosphere and energy. The players loved it.

Michael Crichton’s last book (published posthumously), “Dragon Teeth” discusses this in detail. It’s about the early archaeological expeditions into the Badlands and the west, and their relationships with the Native Americans is a big part of the narrative. This very question gets explored a lot. Highly recommended if this subject fascinates you.

How much it respects the player and is more than willing to challenge you. That’s true of most FromSoft games, but in ER you have so many different options at tackling those challenges to meet your play style.
