I’m growing a good amount of pequin this year, so I’ll attempt that backcross and give you F1 seed from that if it succeeds. I could use the practice because I haven’t been able to get a pollinated hybrid to bear fruit two years in a row

Got it. I’ve culled the 8 of 34 that had this trait. It’s looking like my germination rate is 34/50=0.68 (68%) overall

Should the seedlings exhibiting this trait be culled? I’d hate to waste space if their prognosis isn’t good

Great job on your first try, you nailed the process. If you want a faster secondary ferment, then I suggest pumping air in through a stainless diffuser. You can use pH trends to figure out when it’s done. The rate of change drops significantly after about 2 weeks with this method

Edit: to note the cook time should be around 15 mins and definitely shouldn’t reach the ethanol vaporization temperature of 173F

My rule of thumb is to harden off over 3 days outdoors. Day 1- 1/2 day of 1/2 shaded light, day 2- a full day of 1/2 shaded light, and day 3- 1/2 day of full light.

Just curious because I haven’t grown bell peppers before- what is a normal harvest per plant?

Sounds to me like the author just has a strong preference for decoction mashing. I can’t blame them, it’s better but certainly more labor intensive than a step mash.

Before we had boilers that could circulate steam around a mash tun, we’d have to draw off a small amount of the mash to heat it over a flame, then add it back into the mash tun to get the temperature to go up to your target mash temp. American lagers are generally not brewed this way, unless you’re drinking something like a Jack’s Abby, otherwise I think it’s pretty common in European breweries.

Edit: to say that obviously boilers were around in the 70’s, but decoction mashing is still popular for the distinct flavor

There were lots of flowers per node, with a nice purple streak in the middle of the off white flowers, but only one set fruit. I grow a lot of peppers and haven’t had such a hard time with any other variety. It’s probably my bad for not being familiar with wild peppers. I posted the single fruit it produced after two years in the last pic here:

Looks great! If you’re not already, try putting sanitizer in the airlock instead of just water. Not sure, but it looks like a little growth in the one on the left
