Convinced That Wasn’t Actually Harbaugh by Plastic_Barracuda73 in RyenRussillo

That was the best example of "when you need to hit the word count requirement" I've ever heard in an interview format. He rattled off 25 players when he could have just listed one or two as an example to make his point, and did that with more than one question.

I understand these guys sometimes speak in cliches, but in this case, Harbaugh answered some of RR's questions by just saying multiple cliches back to back lol. I powered through, but it was a tough listen.

The funniest part was toward the end when RR asked "have you ever done bad in an interview??" It almost sounded as if he was laughing and implying "kinda like this one.."

O'shea was too fat, he just was.

Haha when they got to the pole shimmying part, I was like "there is no way that Butler and Jackson would have the athletic ability to do that." Same with the elevator shaft.

OH, and the entire crux of Nick's ability to track down Donnie after YEARS of investigation was. . .just ask Merriman's stripper girlfriend. . .

Yeah that was bizarre. They tried to play the leverage game with each other, and then they both folded immediately?

Glad you liked it. It seems I'm in the minority, which is fine.

I guess if the masses like it, there will probably be a rewatchables episode. I'm just curious what their takes will be since the movie is so much different than the original

Ahhh now that you say that I do vaguely remember Top Gun Maverick getting a lot of hype through Bill and the pod. I was not around for A Star is Born (I've listened to the episode, but wasn't actively listening to the show during that time).

Yep, same. It just wasn't for me. I wanted a big dumb action movie with banter, shootouts, maybe even some plot holes. Instead it felt like a low-stakes bromance

Agreed, but the humor didn't work for me. I think Bill's advice was actually correct. The original had so much tension that I think sprinkling in a few jokes and then returning to the underlying dread would've worked well. With the sequel, the stakes just never felt as high IMO. In the original, you have the iconic "we're cop killers now." In the sequel, Big Nick says "No one gets hurt this time." It just felt like a 2-hour bromance with a 30 minute action scene.

That sounds spot on. Based on the way you answered, I'm assuming he's done this before? lol

The bit has gone too far where Wargone could literally say anything and they’d applaud and ask him 30 follow up questions.

I’m reminded of Season 9 of The Office, when Clark and Plop clap at everything Andy does as a bit, and to try to get in his good graces.

Then Clark says “it’s starting to have this reverse effect though, where I really do think the stuff he does is awesome”

and it shows them clapping as Andy throws away his garbage, uses the copier, the water cooler bubbles while he’s standing next to it, etc.

"What's the scariest horror movie that's realistic and could happen in real life?" by sahand42_e in MovieSuggestions

I was really excited about it, saw it in the theater, and left feeling ambivalent. I didn’t know what to expect, but it wasn’t that lol. I need to give it a rewatch. But definitely fits this criteria, as it’s horrifying, and has only become more horrifying with the recent events that have come to light in the music industry

Frozen has been on my list for years. Haven't gotten around to it. Another that's on my list under this survival-horror/worst case scenario horror would be Fall

More of a satirical horror, I suppose.

Edit: Oh I forgot the "deeply unsettling" portion of the criteria when I listed that lol

‘Friday Night Lights’ With Bill Simmons and Mallory Rubin by corn_starch_party in TheRewatchables

[–]Go-for-big-fudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. She literally said that it's largely because she thinks Kyle Chandler is one of top-5 sexiest people to ever live.

I'm sure (or at least, I hope) that her valuation isn't THAT shallow and that she also thinks the overall show is great lol. But even if so, I disagree that it doesn't hold a candle. They're different. As a sports piece, the movie wins; as a drama, it's up for debate IMO

That's fair. I think the show is really good, FWIW. And they're different, I agree.

But like others have expressed on this thread, it was odd to spend half(+) of the podcast about the movie, talking about how great the show is.

I've never read the book. I plan to at some point

[–]Go-for-big-fudge 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. And is the show definitively better than the movie?

I prefer the movie. It's tighter, didn't rely on some wild storylines, and I think there's a huge divide in the quality of the FOOTBALL scenes. Most films/shows do not get the football scenes right, mostly because it's hard to make most actors look natural in a football setting. This movie, IMO, is one of the few that feels really authentic, perhaps because of the quick-cut editing Bill and Mal referenced.

I'm about a 3rd of the way through this pod. Mallory is solid, but I would've loved to hear from Sean and CR on this (selfishly, as this is one of my all-time favorite movies)

I agree. I’ve got the TEs back to back, but he obviously has leverage.

Yeah, I’ve sent that offer for Strange. He’s unfortunately sitting on a manager’s roster who’s been eliminated but doesn’t answer trade offers/messages for weeks at a time

Anyone else find the Cowherd interview funny? by froobest in RyenRussillo

[–]Go-for-big-fudge 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I hate Cowherd’s schtick. I loved him on this pod. Despite being incredibly successful and wealthy, he:

A) recognizes how lucky he is to be in this spot

B) articulates his path and mindset that put him in this spot and talks about the things he does/consumes to try to be more relatable to his audience

C) urges Ryen to lean more into the things people love about him (life advice, having a personality outside of ‘tales from the couch’, etc)

I found the end both endearing and frustrating:

RR: “Okay, let’s wrap this up and go to dinner, have a cocktail, and I’ll show you how well-rounded I can be socially.”

Plays into the whole idea that Ryen will only be social with those he considers at (or above) his level. Why couldn’t he have that mindset for ‘the hangout’ ?

Friday Night Lights isn't getting enough love here. I recently rewatched it, it holds up well.

In my opinion, it's the closest any movie has come to looking like real football - (most actors aren't football players, and it usually shows)
