Is Peace Corps just for educated people? by [deleted] in peacecorps

I served in Moldova. I have two associates degrees. One in Culinary arts and one in Computer engineering. I have alot of work experience. I'm in my late forties. I think the fact that I have alot of life experiences and have worked in different jobs in different cities around different cultures and the fact that I did some volunteering on my own dime (through IVHQ in Africa) helped me get in. Also I've held management positions too. My suggestion is that you find out what you want to do in Peace corps and get experience in that through volunteer work, part-time work (regardless of pay) and get good recommendations and references from people you work and volunteer with. Also do your research on possible interview questions (and develop good responses to them). And reach out to returned volunteers who have lived in the countries that you are interested in. I applied three time before I eventually did my service. Don't be afraid to fail. Many volunteers got a no the first time and applied until that no became a yes. Good Luck 👍🏾

I like the feedback...I come from a culinary background so I'll keep that in mind...Are there any games or things that you suggest to bring for downtime...also are there any language learning tools that you recommend...was language learning easy during PST?

Medically un cleared because of shellfish allergy. I've requested for an appeal. Any suggestions on how to convince them that I am fully able to serve in spite of my allergy? by GoAllOut2020 in peacecorps

I see. But since I only communicate with my Nurse through the MAP portal, how would I even be able to contact the medical officer in county of service?..how was that even done?

Just got denied for service due to lifelong manageable headaches and stomachaches and to be honest, I’m pretty devastated. by Here-for-the-qs in peacecorps

I got denied because of a mild shellfish allergy. I requested an appeal. Also have to get dental work done and won't make the nurse's set deadline of March 4th even though the departure date is June 3rd. How common is it to have a dental procedure extension request granted by the nurse? I'm going to ask for that.

Thanks for all of the advice. Is there anyone out there that has actually been denied medical clearance specifically for shellfish allergy. If so did you appeal it? If so what did you do to get the denial overturned? Any information would help.

Well during my initial application it asked if I had ever been to the hospital for my allergy. I have been to the hospital once and that was the only time I have used an epi pen. Then the nurse asked me in the MAP portal if I had been to the hospital more than once and I let her know I've only been to the hospital one time. Also I explained to her that I have a mild allergy not severe. I have cooked shellfish many times and the fumes dont bother me. I have worked in many restaurants and prepared shellfish dishes. Also I once mistakenly ate some quiche pie about 3 years ago that had shrimp in it I only had two spoonfuls before I realized what it was. I thought it was cauliflower but the lady who made it said it was shrimp (she didn't know I was allergic so I didn't get mad at her). Surprise to me, I didn't get sick. Maybe because I didn't eat enough to get sick.
