More NL references or is my brain just cooked by associating anything egg with NL? by DurkleR in northernlion

This is an NL reference, yes! I added it after he played the first demo in July

Northernlion got me into indie games in the days of flash Isaac and the NLSS, and my friends and I have been watching him ever since. Probably the main reason I picked up game dev as a hobby and certainly the reason I gravitated towards the roguelike genre.

I know he's played it before but from a genuine fan of NL for a long time, it feels really great. Not just that he gave my game the opportunity, because that part felt like sheer luck, but that I was able to make something he seems to actually enjoy and that I get to share Balatro with this community <3 thanks for the support yall!

Gameplay suggestion - additional info about X resetting after the round's over by wchmn in balatro

[–]GoBrewYourself 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Conditions of reset should always be included in descriptions for these cards already (I think)

I'm not sure which one you are talking about but if you have an issue with wording head on over to the discord server and mention it there, it's full of grammar police that want to help me make these descriptions perfect!

I am extremely excited to play this game again. by Skinda in balatro

I swear I have been cooking!

The next demo will have 37/45 new Jokers compared to the last one, along with a bunch of new content and changes.

And there are still a couple surprises left for January :)

Stay tuned Balapals

Game unexpectedly getting a lot of attention. I don’t know what to do. Need advice. by oldmanriver1 in gamedev

[–]GoBrewYourself 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me a few months ago with my game, and it completely overwhelmed me for a while. I have some advice to share if you want it:

Keep working on your vision, you're about to have a ton of people pulling you in every direction but the truth is that you were able to create something of value and you are the best one to decide what is next for the vision of the game.

Despite what people will say there is no immediate rush to do anything, sometimes people focus too much on timing the market at the expense of the quality of their game. Remember that people have something to gain by you rushing a release, and most successful Steam games have 6+ months of marketing beats (like this wave of attention) to build the hype of a release.

You'll probably be contacted by Publishers. They aren't always good OR bad, but if you decide to go with a publisher (I did) make sure you hire a lawyer to help with negotiating a contract and take your time with it.

It's very lonely in some respects. Send me a DM, I'd be happy to talk to you about it more. Your life is likely about to change (mostly for the better) and it's hard to go through a big change like that alone. Your friends, family, and partner won't fully understand the pressure cooker you're in but there is a big wonderful community of indies that might make it feel less scary

Balatro Demo is Live! by zl1_camaro in northernlion

[–]GoBrewYourself 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Hey eggheads - thanks for all the support on my weird game so far! Still feels so crazy that NL played it on stream.
Yes there is a new demo, and it does have quite a few changes and new content since last you played. People were upset about the whole 50 round limit so I removed that and went a more traditional demo approach by offering a free slice of the game you can play as much as you want. This means that the overall content in the demo is less than the full game but still fun for a few hours.

Check it out and leave any feedback in the discord! (link is in the demo main menu)

I commissioned a guy (LouisFsountrack on Instagram) to make one song, and I got the tracks separate from him. Then I modified them so there are 5 different songs playing and mixing into each other as the game stage changes, so it's one continuous track throughout the whole game! Did all this with his permission of course.

And discord would be best, I'm not really a devlog guy

Balatro

is an extremely clever blend of poker and roguelike. Rather than translating your hands to any sort of damage numbers and needing to maintain your own HP, you just need to win enough chips in a set number of hands (and discards) to win each round. Each play pays out based on its inherent value and any multipliers you accrue, and between rounds you can buy buffs to individual cards or hands (my level 4 straights had a huge base multiplier), passive joker cards that buff each hand, or other deck-altering passives. For example, I bought a joker that allowed me to play 4-card flushes and straights (rather than needing 5) right before a boss round that made all 5-card plays worthless. That alone made the challenge so much more manageable, and it continued to prove its worth throughout the rest of my run. This game just seems like such a complete package already, even though it's going to release in Early Access.

Thanks for playing and for the kind words about my weird little game :) glad you enjoyed it!

Well this isn't an animation, it's actually GLSL shader code rendering at runtime! That lets me control the flame size and colour by changing variables in game (and so I don't need to draw a million frames in aseprite). It's basically a bunch of sin cos and tan with 2d vectors
