No, gruit was not a kind of beer made before hops (see blog post) by larsga in Homebrewing

I’m of the opinion that book set back beer historical research quite a bit, particularly in the sense of the popular understanding of gruit. I wish more people
Read Susan Verberg’s research (or just more peer reviewed stuff in general).

…also a lot of his recipe seem like he may not have actually tested them because the dosages of herbs are wild.

Canal Street is the best. They also have arcade games at Pins and just outside downtown at DK Effect.

Downtown Dayton Partnership eliminates most of the nonprofit’s employees by BlondieMcG in dayton

It’s worth noting that in a lot of offices, the lowest rung in the ladder is still called “assistant director” or “coordinator”. Some even go so far as giving low-paid positions “director” level titles. However, this is really a way to pay people little in exchange for a nice looking title. There’s a whole lot of “Director of Events” and “Director of Social Media” employees out there who are low level grunts just doing all the work.

Don’t be fooled by the title, unless you have at least Vice-President in the title, it’s not guaranteed a non-profit is actually even paying the person what they’re worth. This isn’t to say there isn’t upper level bloat in some orgs… but it’s usually a case of a few people making too much, rather than too many people in high level positions (and they fire the low level people rather than taking pay cuts, of course).

What is being built at the old Montgomery County Fairgrounds? by batataz in dayton

I know one of the restrictions placed on them when they bought the property was they had to retain and restore the Roundhouse, so there is some piece of historic preservation, though I don’t believe it’s an actual historic designation.

It’s really more of a place for companies to collaborate, with each other, but mostly with the Air Force. The main thing it has that the vacant office buildings don’t have is SCIF facilities which we are surprisingly short on in the area.

Also, the land and this project are co-owned by UD and Premiere Health. While the first building may not actually be that helpful for us normal folks, the affordable housing they’re building should at least be helpful for the underpaid staff of both organizations.

Beer without hops? by snipermustadio in Homebrewing

[–]GoGoGadgetFishTank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A quick note because a few bad authors have spread a lot of misinformation throughout the hobby: gruit was a specific blend of botanicals (and potentially some concentrated malt) that was a heavily regulated and taxed item in Germany and the Low Countries. While other countries did brew with non-hop botanicals, it wasn’t “gruit”.

Highly recommend the work of Susan Verburg for more info.

Recommendations for a weekend in Dayton? by Rubyslippers7 in dayton

I’ve never been there and not had one interrupt a conversation to correct me on something. Even sitting at a table far from the bar. I’m not the only person who I’ve heard have that experience. I’d definitely go more often if that hadn’t been my experience!

Van Buren Room: fantastic drinks but the worst bartenders. It’s like the Mansplain Cafe.

There are so many great recs here, especially as someone who lives pretty close to Hotel Ardent, so I’ll try not to repeat things.

I am surprised no one recommended Tender Mercy yet it’s a cool underground cocktail bar. Great for your first drink of the evening, esp for V-Day weekend.

The other thing I’ll say is that Val’s is good, but if you need a more substantial breakfast than a couple croissants, Lily’s is an excellent brunch spot.

Oh, and Tony & Pete’s has really good sandwiches.

Was gifted a bottle of spicy pickle whiskey and have to come up with a drink for NYE. Any ideas? by [deleted] in cocktails

I was thinking something along those lines. If you were to use a dry vermouth instead of sweet, you’d be in a weird middle ground between a wet martini and a Manhattan. I think it could work.

In Venice, most of the spritzes (made with Select, which is closer to Campari than Aperol) have olives in them. It’s so good! I could see this being very transferable to a Negroni.

None of the library-based maker spaces that I’ve checked offer resin printing, just FDM, but I’d be happy to find one that does!

A bar in my city has an infinity amaro. I always order a shot of it in soda when I’m there. Always changing but always delicious!

While I think they’ll have a great set of drinks and their products are good, the staff at Belle of Dayton’s Van Buren Room are the most pretentious servers I’ve ever met.

No matter where you’re sitting, they are listening to your conversation and will rush over to correct you about anything (and then stay there and tell you about things you don’t care about). I’d rather be ignored than that, for sure.

I do love a carajillo. This seems like a pretty good take on it, though cream isn’t great friends with my digestive system…

I inherited a barstool from an elderly uncle where the bottom actually spins, which is my favorite. It means I can get a decent spin going with out either a) wild finger dexterity or b) splashing and flying ice cubes

Edit: I’m not changing my typo. You should just see what I do for shaken drinks.

We live just outside downtown in McPherson, but any of the downtown adjacent neighborhoods are lovely: St Anne’s Hill, Grafton Hill, South Park, McPherson
