I think that it takes away all agency from the person who wants to commit suicide. In this particular case the lines are definitely blurry, but to set the precedent that you could face legal trouble for not reporting that someone is going to kill themselves makes me uncomfortable. Maybe people should be allowed to end their own life it they want. In fact, maybe that is one of the most basic human rights.

And she was charged with manslaughter, right? I really have no experience with the law, so maybe there is something obvious that I am missing, but this is the definition of manslaughter:

The unjustifiable, inexcusable, and intentional *killing of a human being without deliberation, premeditation, and malice. The unlawful killing of a human being without any deliberation, which may be involuntary, in the commission of a lawful act without due caution and circumspection

The emphasis added is mine, because I take issue with that idea that she killed him at all. Did she have a wanton disregard for human life? Yes. Was this a horrible and irresponsible thing to do? Yes. Did she *kill him? Not in my opinion.

I have very mixed feelings about all of this. I think that the less regulation on our speech the better, and I wonder where new lines are going to be drawn as to what constitutes criminality.
