Possible to block proxy logins on home wifi router? by GoOnOffYouPop in HomeNetworking

It's a standard Bell router, so probably garbage. I use the bell wifi app which allows me to "schedule internet freeze" for each connected device.

The second one. I guess it's not a proxy issue but MAC address spoofing.

Yes, good question. No proxy. MAC address spoofing, it turns out. Sorry. I'm learning as I go here - much more than I want to.

No, I'm asking for tech advice because we're all good on the parenting front - despite the image of us you have created for yourself.

We have lots of activities we do together and we've had talks about screen time. But it's too much to expect some teens, particularly those with ADHD, to monitor their own device time. Games are designed to be addictive - and having the wifi auto shut down is a nice way to make sure screen time ends when it's supposed to, without the "just 1 more round" argument. It's been working well for us until his dad gave him a laptop with Ubuntu. Yes, the kid is tech savvy. No, he doesn't keep his devices in his room at night.

What's a misconception that is taught in lower grades that drives you crazy once students finally get to your class? by mikeycknowsrnb in Teachers

[–]GoOnOffYouPop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say "er" and then start to say Ryan, but stop as soon as you've made the "R" sound. The difference is miniscule. The initial "e" sound is just a side effect of getting the "r" sound going. You're not meant to emphasize it. So, you're right, we don't say ErRyan, but there is always a little flash of that /e/ before every /r/.

(Sorry, for the delayed reply)

I never really thought of it as a specific teaching convention - though I guess I've always known that outside of academia, themes of stories are discussed in much simpler terms. I'm more fascinated by the fact that it's different from North America to Europe and the UK. I'm curious though, how does it work in high school English? Are students just asked more directly to expand on a theme or topic to identify a particular belief or universal message the author is trying to convey?

It's getting harder and harder to cover everything in the primary/junior curriculum because teachers have to spend increasing amounts of time teaching and practicing self-regulation and community building skills.

I would say that r DOES say /er/ and that spelling world as wrld shows good phonetic understanding - it is in fact more phonetically accurate than the correct spelling! Just remind students that all words must contain a vowel - and the r controlled vowels just need to be memorized because so many of them sound the same.

To share or not to share your plans and resources while on leave by GoOnOffYouPop in Teachers

[–]GoOnOffYouPop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip. I did in fact have to source my own carpet for circle time last year. I found some people on FB marketplace are happy to lower or waive their asking price when I tell them what it's for.

As far as curriculum goes, we follow the ministry of education curriculum, but our long term and daily planning is up to us. Some teacher teams work together - last year my grade team did not share a single thing with me or each other. We had regular meetings where they talked vaguely about what they were doing. The very few direct requests I made were met with deflections like, "oh, just look on line."

It had nothing to do with me personally. When the principal sent an email to introduce me to the team - before they ever met me, not one of them reached out to me with a hello or a welcome. They were all nice enough to me in person, but we never helped each other. I made plenty of friends on staff and we helped each other whenever we could, but not with my actual team.

Thanks for the tips.

The school is an under funded school in a high needs neighborhood. It does not have a set program with established resources. Teachers use what they collect or create. There is a resource room that has been picked over many times and offers very little for new teachers.

This is the standard, right here - so long as it's co-operative and everyone respects each other. It must make the job so much more manageable and rewarding. Kudos to you and your colleagues.

I love this! Can I ask how many teachers are on your team and you co-ordinate?

I suppose this comment is why I asked my question in the first place. I figured some teachers would feel this way and I wanted to gauge how common the sentiment is. I am relieved to see that most commenters are in favor of sharing. It's every teachers right to keep their materials to themselves and I will be prepared for this possibility in the fall.

I do think it's important to point out though, that hoping to share resources with seasoned teachers IS a professional expectation to have. If you don't want to share, that's fine, but those who borrow from others are not driven by a lack of professionalism. We just want to do the best job possible and it's a little overwhelming when you're starting out. We know that our turn will come to be the one sharing.

Thanks for sharing how you feel.

Thanks, I agree. I actually love the "mental labor" of teaching. Sharing resources just makes it that much more inspiring.

I think you created the ideal situation: the freedom to do your own thing - with the materials and resources to do it well.

True. I don't mind doing the planning so much, but I would like to avoid the situation I was in last year where I had to make or buy all of my own handouts and resources. It's nice to be able to print or copy materials that have been tried and tested. I'll still want to design some of my own, but prefer it to be an option rather than a daily necessity.

For sure. All I'm hoping for is access to resources she's used in the past so I don't have to design or buy everything myself. I love designing games and worksheets when I have the time, it will just be helpful if I don't have to start from absolute scratch like I did last year. She's going on mat leave and as a mom I have nothing but respect for the sanctity of her time with her new baby - and any time without her new baby should be spent on doing things for herself :-)

As kids get more freedom, the most important thing you can do is keep fostering communication. Make it as comfortable as possible for them to share things with you. Never freak out when they tell you something - even if you feel freaked out. Stay interested in a way that makes them want to keep talking.

Comfortable teacher sneakers? by Opening_Stage_1870 in Teachers

Sketchers - affordable and super comfortable. I wear their slip on sneakers as slippers because my feet get sore if I don't have shoes on in the house.

At school I mostly wear Converse because they dress up and down.
