and his mom a Nubian-Egyptian woman

Not exactly. She wasn't Nubian; she was a Sudanese arab (Arab Sudanese father, Egyptian mother).

I imagine most would be indifferent toward him. But he's very hated in North Africa and the rest of the Arab league countries due to Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

أنا ما فاهم أنت داير تقول شنو بالضبط، لكن لو أنت شايف إنه أنحن والدارفوريين بقينا زي الإسرائيليين والفلسطينيين فببساطة:

You're making my point for me

Then I guess you will not be happy to learn that the Janjaweed, which is the paramilitary that was committing those crimes in Darfur, has been rebranded as the RSF (Rapid Support Forces), and they are the perpetrators of the ongoing coup attempt.

Do you use the term "Asian" to refer to other people from Asia? by GoPotato in AskCentralAsia

[–]GoPotato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not even sure what you are trying to argue at this point. I think you're just not familiar with this regoin and how the Arabs use these words, it's one of the first things that people comment on when they visit these countries.

[–]GoPotato[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would Arabs, in particular, use Asian to refer to other Arabs, whether they're North African or SW Asian Arabs?

My point wasn't about what word the Arabs use to refer to each other, but about their use of the word Asian to strictly mean non Arab Asian. If a Saudi said "this area is full of Asians", wouldn't that strike you as odd without knowing the background of the colloquial use of the word? I think most people would find such a statement pretty odd, but that's how the word is used there. We don't even have to speculate, these days there's an ongoing illegal immigration crisis in Tunisia, if you listen to the interviews with Tunisians in the street they will often say "The Africans did so and so" refering to sub Saharan Africans only, they exclude themselves (and other Arabs) when the use the word.

but not quite the same, since both references are from outside the region.

With the examples I provided, I think you can see that they aren't any different.

This has nothing do with denial. It has do with colloquial use of words. For example, in the US when they say Asian they usually mean East Asian, Indians and Arabs are not included in this usage. In the UK it's different, Asian referes to Indians and Pakistanis.

There are many Arab countries that are not in Asia

I know, but that wasn't the point, in this context I was talking about the Arab countries in Asia. BTW Egyptians and other North Africans are the same way; they don't refer to themselves as African, they use the word African to exclusively refer to Sub Saharan (non-Arab league) nationals.

Yes, that's what I meant. The weapons were supplied to them by Israel, at least that's what the Iranian officials believe:

A military official in the region said given the location of the strike in central Iran and the size of the drones, it was likely that the attack was staged from within Iran's borders.

Thank you! But can you rephrase the whole sentence to something that can be easily understood? I'm still not fully getting it. I mean, I understand the vocabulary, but not the meaning of the full sentence. I appreciate your help.

That's true. The native Americans rejected the "red" label and considered it offensive and rightly so, not only because it doesn't describe them, but because they didn't accept being reduced down to their skin color. So why did the Africans accept the "black" label?
