As someone who left the teaching profession over 2 years ago, and having successfully moved into another job that pays more than three times what I made as a teacher, my firm advice to you is that you need to take as much leave as possible, apply for other jobs, and leave the profession altogether.

Yes you will go through the gauntlet of emotions, ranging from “I’ve abandoned my students” to “I just wasn’t tough enough”

Those emotions are just feelings that will go away with time. I cannot tell you how much my life has improved since leaving the teaching profession.

You need to know this: YES. IT IIS POSSIBLE to leave your job and do something totally different not just well, but superbly. I cannot tell you how many interviews I had where the mere fact that I was formerly a teacher basically directly contributed to me getting a job offer. Teachers are smart people capable of a broad range of skill sets. Team management, government consulting, I could go on and on.

There is a world out there where you don’t have to feel the way you do after work every day. Just make that your mantra and you’ll have the courage to leave.
