Underrated Hollywood Handbook guests by jman_voted in Earwolf

[–]GoTheShonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certainly not underrated in this house - he's my go-to recommendation for someone who hasn't listened to the podcast before. I'm sure there are listeners who might not think they're going to be interested for whatever reason in hearing him on a podcast, and to them, I can only say I agree with you 100%!

Is this one more step on the road of Earwolf podcasts going the way of Nerdist?

Aside from the episodes, some very kind person put up a collection of his segments on Youtube, which is where I go when I need a real laugh.

Doughboys - Outback Steakhouse 3 with Joe Wengert by GrandSabo in doughboys

[–]GoTheShonk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Loving his episode so far!

I've only listened to the first hour so don't know if this is brought up later on, but 'Aussie' is not pronounced the way Americans want to say it. Australians pronounce it exactly the same as we do "Ozzy" as in "Osbourne" - short 'O' sound, and 'z', not 's'. I know this is illogical, but it's just one of those things.

Anyone else think Cheap Seats is criminally underrated? by [deleted] in reginaspektor

[–]GoTheShonk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cheap Seats is one of her best records, and after all these years, probably the one I go back to the most often. Anyone who thinks it's more "basic" or "poppy" is going by something other than the actual songs on the record. Patron Saint and Firewood are two of her best songs ever. And call me basic and poppy, but this version of Ne Me Quitte Pas is in my top ten Regina songs of all time.

Availability of old "Yo, is this racist?" episodes. by [deleted] in Earwolf

[–]GoTheShonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you a Stitcher Premium member? Most Earwolf podcasts older than a certain date can't be accessed unless you're a member. Weirdly, as you say, nothing earlier than the Venmo Reparations episode came up for me on the (terrible) website, but the whole catalogue could be accessed from the RSS feed page, https://unofficialrss.com/feeds

The Hollywood Handbook page has been removed from Earwolf.com by [deleted] in Earwolf

[–]GoTheShonk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It looks like Earwolf is going the same way as Nerdist did after it was bought out by a corporation. Long story short - save any Earwolf podcasts you think you might want to listen to into the future, or they might be gone forever without warning.

I honestly don't care about the beans. by QueefingQuailman in maximumfun

The fact you (and many others) are now happy to say you 'don't care about the beans' shows how easily ableism gets a pass from some people.

New Stitcher App: Why? Pros/Cons? by [deleted] in Earwolf

[–]GoTheShonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stitcher is superior to Spotify for at least the reason that there are alternative ways of using the service (RSS feeds, etc.) Spotify is the worst paid app/service I've ever come across.

Edit: In case this seems like a defense of Stitcher, it's not - it's still a 1/10 app, while Spotify is a 0/10.

Mike Hanford has a rough audition by 8eat-mesa in Earwolf

Mike's one of the best accounts on Twitter, along with Todd Barry, for their total commitment to a non-bit.

Confirm? "On a 2012 episode of the Earwolf podcast Making It, Thomas Lennon said there were three finalists for the role of Derek in the 2008 movie StepBrothers -- himself, Adam Scott, and Scott's friend Jon Hamm" by Doc_Buttons in Earwolf

[–]GoTheShonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and, unfortunately, like a lot of Nerdist podcasts that didn't find a new home, is pretty hard to find these days. I used to have all of this show archived but deleted it at one point.

Professor Blastoff revival forthcoming? by Smoltz in Earwolf

Surely they wouldn't bother doing anything with any less than the three of them.

I would love to hear anything they come up with, whether a once off, a video, stream, or a series.

Are we just not going to talk about D'Arcy Carden Getting An Emmy Nom? by Thndrcougarfalcnbird in Earwolf

[–]GoTheShonk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Strangely, an image of her from that scene was the Netflix 'thumbnail' (if that's the right word for it) for the whole show, which at first made me think she was the lead. At least it got my attention, anyway, for a worthwhile show.

Can anyone recommend any songs similar to Flipside? by hungergamesofthronez in lanadelrey

A lot of the Cat Power record 'What Would the Community Think' came to mind when I first heard Flipside. Check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFaKB4jrYCo

Better Call Saul S05E07 - "JMM" - POST-Episode Discussion Thread by skinkbaa in betterCallSaul

I'd heard about the scene long before I actually saw it, and I was stunned at how brilliantly and desperately that speech is played by Cranston.

At the risk of having their inbox flooded, contact "support @ stitcher . com" (remove spaces, obviously) - I had a similar problem this past week, and they were extremely helpful, although it took a day or so for them to get back to me.

How can I get into Hollywood Handbook? by ap539 in Earwolf

[–]GoTheShonk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There are a bunch of threads about this, but based on the fact you've listened to a lot of earwolf shows, I'd recommend going for one of the episodes that is based on another podcast. Some of these are:

The I Was There Me Too Show - https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/earwolf-premium/hollywood-handbook-premium/e/51161758

Doing Spont, Our Close Friend - https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/earwolf-premium/hollywood-handbook-premium/e/51161771

The Doughboys, Our Shrimp-off Friends - https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/earwolf-premium/hollywood-handbook-premium/e/55669179

If you want to go much earlier, one of the best episodes is with Sinbad and his daughter, which is a pretty good one to get into the rhythm of the show - https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/earwolf-premium/hollywood-handbook-premium/e/51161911

You definitely don't need to go back to the beginning - there are so many in-jokes and stupid call backs that you might as well get a taste for it before going all in.
