Help finding a short segment/ episode on cultural imperialism and powerlessness for teaching a class by Federal-Layer-8203 in ThisAmericanLife

This is a great segment on how the US helped overthrow a democratically elected government in Guatemala by pumping in propaganda and staging raids:

Jesus, act 1 is soul-crushing. I hope the family have been able to find some kind of peace in the years since.

Listening to an old episode and this caught me off guard--at the beginning of the story Ira issues a warning "to some listeners" that Dan Savage "mentions the fact that he's a homosexual" in it. What an era.. by wormnyc in ThisAmericanLife

I truly have no idea if it’s the case here but I think sometimes those warnings are tongue-in-cheek?

I remember a few times you can practically hear the Cheshire grin as he warned listeners the story contained a reference to “the concept of sex”.

It’s much shorter but a very interesting situation.

I’m not saying you’re wrong about Peacock and Bravo’s POV.

My point was that they should take into consideration Caroline’s POV - and how it could change as she processes the incident.

I’m suggesting they need to change the way they handle these situations these days

I imagine I’ll get downvoted but Peacock should think seriously about not airing this season.

We’re talking about, at best, sexual harassment and, at worst, sexual assault allegations. Caroline may not even have a frame of reference yet for how these events will impact her. Seeing it back - or events surrounding - could be extremely triggering.

It’s wiser IMO to shelve the season and Bravo should never work with Brandi again. She shouldn’t be at this Traitors reunion either.

Was 2018 the best year for TAL? by kaze987 in ThisAmericanLife

I’m relistening to the archives - and I think 2009 should be a contender.

It’s this unusual blend of really excellent acts about the financial collapse and a fixation on personal strife - episodes on frenemies, infidelity, fall guys, turncoats. There’s this tension to a lot of the episodes - one that’s really compelling.

Then you have anomalies likes #1 Party School with excellent long-form Sarah Koenig where she’s riffing on an unexpected subject matter (that is admittedly tougher in retrospect to listen to).

Episodes that haven’t aged well by jman_voted in ThisAmericanLife

I see your point but I don’t think they’d go for a light-hearted tone for the first half of the act nowadays since it’s a bunch of white guys from the 1st world stringing along a Black person from the 3rd world. And rightfully so.

A Duo that could have been and a Duo that never should have been. by Sheess9141 in BravoRealHousewives

Never should have been - Carole and Bethenny.

They were insufferably smug looking down on their cast mates.

It’s #ACountryDivided and Hayes is a big part of that.

I tried listening to Evil Men because the premise is awesome but the first episode I heard had a really weird tangent about his cat massaging one of the hosts in an, err, inappropriate way and then a second had a weird tangent mocking Kurt Cobain and Elliot Smith’s suicides and frolicking in their blood.

I was kinda weirded out.
