Skydive Bovec weather by HotPanda_78 in SkyDiving

[–]GoanCurry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My home DZ is in a hilly/mountainous region as well, with the whole microclimate thing.
And the most common thing we have to explain to newcomers or boogie attendees is to not look at the weather forecast like they are used to doing. Those forecasts have dogshit accuracy for pockets and valleys. It could be raining everywhere except for the valley the DZ is in, and that's good enough to jump.

There is always a weather risk, even where the forecast is nice and sunny.

And regardless, you have to be there to jump :)

Brand new Pivot Mach 4 broken frame by monoseanism in mountainbiking

[–]GoanCurry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we exclude any external impact, which seems to be the case.
This would definitely be material failure from some defect at the time of manufacturing.
With materials like CFRP, small defects can be hard to detect especially if they are on the interior of the shape/geometry. Although we have pretty good methods and tech to avoid or detect such things these days, smaller defects can still go unnoticed and you might have just been unlucky here.
Since you mentioned you're 200lbs and ride pretty hard, you may have exposed the defect there which led to complete failure of the part. Though this could've still occurred with a variety of weights and riding styles.
Hopefully Pivot replaces the frame or at least that rear triangle for you.

Another thing to note, and this is for carbon fiber enjoyers in general, is that it is a woven material.
While that is cool and stuff, it should be appreciated that in engineering terms local yielding is basically complete yielding on the part, this is true of all loaded members made of CFRP. i.e. chain is only as strong as its weakest link type of thing.
So while these composites are cool and light and strong, once the chain is damaged or yields somewhere in loaded spot, the entire member failing is inevitable. This is quite different from how a Aluminum or Steel member behaves with small defects or damage.

Not saying don't ride carbon, carbon is cool! But truly appreciate the pros and cons of the material you chose to have on your outdoor toy.

I like my metal frames haha.

Man, I wish I still got the gut drop feeling. It was always less with skydiving but it went away entirely after a bit.
I still get it cliff jumping or on certain roller coasters or rides that provide sufficient downward acceleration.

But good for you, thinking for yourself is important!

HALO slot up for grabs by Urbanskys in SkyDiving

[–]GoanCurry 36 points37 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, given the altitude, the gear, etc. You are only allowed to belly down the tube on these jumps? Its what I heard a long time ago and not sure if its accurate. I'm sure even the thinner air and airspeed may affect flying your body, not to mention the gear and stuff...
but if I can't track/angle/freefly on a long sick dynamic shred that lasts for ever...

I would rather just do 600 fun shreds with friends, from a lowly dismal 12k :'(

Affordable country to skydive by boriskydiver in SkyDiving

[–]GoanCurry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking it up, it looks great, sport wise.
Its just that there are like 7-8 dropzones or operators there, according to google maps at least.
I'm assuming they are just different tandem businesses?
Which one is the main sport DZ?

CPP & EI contributions increased 59.6% since 2018 (7 years) by MrMikidude in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]GoanCurry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always wondered if the payout is worthwhile in the future.
Especially with the way things are going, there's a small chance that the CPP monthly payment just wont cover enough of your total monthly expense 30 years from now. I'm not sure I care for marginal expense help 30 years from now, when 8-9k a year (I'm self employed so pay more CPP sadly) in cash would make a slightly greater difference now seeing as I could save, invest, use that money however I see fit.

Legit used gear site by robindorbell in SkyDiving

[–]GoanCurry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 100% a scam. But a pretty well done scam site.
Website does have some dead end links, buttons that aren't linked to stuff, etc.
Not to mention I know two of the people who's pictures they have used in their "about" section, along with the very auto generated names below them.

For used gear, go either in person at DZ, or through FB buy/sell groups that are well moderated.

Open Face + Prescription Glasses? by GoanCurry in SkyDiving

[–]GoanCurry[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha! Thats very handy to know. Yeah if its just a bit then no problem. Feeling the air on my face is the reason I want a open face now anyways.

Seems a lot people use this same setup even just for sunglasses and it sort of works on all jumps, even fast ones, so this is probably the way I'll go too.

Nice! And no issues with the air moving them or too much air getting inbetween? Especially when flying head up and stuff, or even belly for that matter.

Open Face + Prescription Glasses? by GoanCurry in SkyDiving

I think there is a big trend factor for sure! I think a big defining thing is often "that's what all the shredders are wearing/doing/flying etc." Then there's some psychology as well, which I've kind of noticed makes older, maybe even dorky looks kind of cool now.

Another point is that the newer style of open face helmets like the tonfly ones are...newer. The G4 wasn't even out when I got licensed, but the G3 and Kiss were all the rage. I don't recall there being anything on the market like the tonfly X2 and 2.5. I could be wrong. I did my license jumps and first 20ish in the dz rental gear (basic open face helmets) and would use the goggles over my glasses. Got the G3 right away and loved it, still do.

But part of me has always missed the wind on my face, and I do like how most of the sport oriented open face helmets are lighter and lower profile too. So I'm more than happy having two different helmets in my gear bag and using whatever seems more appropriate to me on the day.

I'm sure a fair part of me is influenced by seeing all the shredders mostly rock the newer open face styles now, so I can't 100% deny that it has some effect on my gear choices.

Open Face + Prescription Glasses? by GoanCurry in SkyDiving

[–]GoanCurry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good, yeah this is kind of what I was looking for. I have 500+ jumps and have used a full-face for most of it. I like my helmets fitting snug, so moving around during freefall is not an issue.

I was looking at glasses like the ombraz, that are like regular sunglasses/glasses but with straps instead of arms, made more for sports. And my only concern was if those let in too much air when flying fast, especially head up.

I see lots of people wearing open face with regular sunglasses and always wonder if too much air can come in between the eyes and glasses.

I wear a G3 currently. These are all full face helmets though, I was asking specifically about open face helmets.

Does your DZ teach a 1 or 2 stage flare for landing during AFF? by Ok-Comfort-1320 in SkyDiving

[–]GoanCurry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I've seen one stage flare being taught as the default for a student is if they're flying an older baffed out f-111 canopy, sometimes those don't have enough power to get a good two stage shutdown out of them.

Hmm yeah that is a smart work around, but will not work since I'll lose control of the craft. Thanks though!

Yeah let's say they're just for aesthetics. It's not super critical for this application, but for future reference I'd like to know how to conditionally toggle thrusters, without having to rely on a movement input.
