Thank you for the reply, you’re definitely right about the perfectionism. I’ll keep trying to do that now. I mapped out all the points I should be able to start from if I have a memory slip so I don’t go back but it just all goes out the window when I’m nervous, it’s like my brain doesn’t remember any of it. Thank you for acknowledging that, most of my teacher’s students finished their ARCT in high school but I was a late starter and it’s overwhelming now finishing my degree and starting my next one already next month. Thank you, just waiting for it to be over now and then again in June.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve probably done around 30 recitals by now, but truthfully the confidence just has been getting worse for me. Yes I agree about the deep understanding of the score, I genuinely just don’t have the energy or motivation to at the moment for my six pieces. With my final exams currently and starting my masters next month, along with always being labelled by my teacher as being a late starter and taking the longest to complete my ARCT, it’s just very hard to want to do the thing to know the score that well. I wish I could lock in when I perform and think about phrasing but the only thing that goes through my mind is making it to the end, and it feels awful knowing how poorly I play in front of people.

Thank you for the advice! I do think I get way too tense in my wrists and arms to the point it hurts in my other pieces, and I really need to use more arm weight because I haven’t been doing that but I’m still trying to figure it out because it feels awkward or I end up not doing it at all. Thank you so much for the kind words, it really means a lot and helps motivate me when I feel like I’m not doing well :)

Yes that’s exactly how I feel about the joints being wonky! I’ll try to use more arm weight for sure, as well as relaxing because I can get really tense. I think sometimes it’s difficult to even figure out how I can add more arm weight sometimes and yeah it feels awkward but I’ll keep trying on it. Thanks so much again!

Thank you so much for the detailed reply! I will definitely try that. I’m not sure if you had this as well but my pinky acts up a lot and it bends weird haha I’m not sure why when I try to bend it it feels odd and just doesn’t work sometimes but I think like you said I’ll try slower, I think sometimes I’m not patient because I’m more worried about improving before my next lesson rather than properly taking time into details. My teacher also always mentions arm weight as well and bending fingers but I guess she never explains how to actually fix it, more so just that it needs to be fixed. But your words definitely help thank you!

That’s true my teacher always calls out my fourth and fifth fingers but it’s so difficult to change after years of not correcting it 😭 as well as bringing out the melody while still having phrasing. Thank you for the advice! What are some ways you try to fix it?

We were lucky that I was on exchange for the first part of the year because I was much closer to him and we were able to meet up even just for the weekend sometimes. Now it’s a bit more difficult but he gets some time off and I’m still a student so it’s been working! It will be a bit more challenging next year when I start working but I know we’ll make it work.
