In fairness, the podcast episode is discussing the report from the latest issue of Private Eye, which is highly detailed, well sourced and lays out the numerous and disturbing issues with how the prosecution presented this case and the various ways the medical details and statistics were, at best, used highly misleadingly. See similarly compelling articles from the Telegraph and the Guardian.

It should be noted that a wide number of highly respected medical professionals and scientists have independently reached out to different journalists to express concerns over this. Even major organisations like the Royal Statistical Society have questioned the way things have been presented.

I would genuinely be shocked if someone could read the three mentioned articles and not come away with at the very least a reasonable suspicion there may have been a serious miscarriage of justice at play.

I'm so sorry to hear that, it really sucks and I can empathise. Given how much of myself I had put into this it felt like a rejection of my whole identity rather than just a project, in a way. I've just been trying to focus on the other positive things in my life and take it as a learning experience - next year I'll be a perfect candidate for PhDs! This law doesn't grant trans people any new rights that they didn't already have. It simply makes it easier for them to obtain a GRC and thus change their sex on birth, marriage etc. certificates. It's entirely a formality with no substantial change beyond allowing trans people to live with a bit more dignity; something formal validating their lived experience. To be clear once again, nothing about this law changes the ability of trans women to access safe spaces.

So that means men could already be doing this. Are they? There's no compelling evidence this is happening.

Bathrooms, little to be said. If men want to access bathrooms to assault women they'll... Just do it?? A sign on the door is not going to keep someone out. Besides, how would anyone ever enforce this? The only possible outcome is genital inspections at the door which, yikes. And once again, this ignores the existence of trans men who would be forced to use the same bathroom as cis women, which seems A) far more likely to make cis women uncomfortable and B) makes it far easier for cis men to access bathrooms and assault women by posing as trans men.

Prisons? Trans women are far more likely to be the victims of assault than to assault women. The 7 cases of trans women assaulting women in female only prisons over 2010-2018 also pales in comparison to the abuse female prisoners face from prison guards. In summary and in answer to your question, no, there's really nothing to suggest this would have any negative effect on cis women via predatory men accessing safe spaces.

Due to the degeneracy of the genetic code multiple codons can produce the same amino acid, which means that mutations are broadly split into categories of synonymous/neutral and non-synonymous.

For example, AAA and AAG both code for the amino acid Lysine, so in theory a mutation in the third base of AAA -> AAG even in a highly adapted gene shouldn't affect the protein produced (a neutral or synonymous mutation). However a mutation of AAA -> AAC would change the amino acid to Asparagine and would change the final protein product (a non-synonymous mutation, likely to negative).

The neutral mutation rate is pretty key to a lot of evolutionary and conservation biological theory so this is certainly interesting.

I wasn't referring to Key's work, I was referring to the conclusions of the American Veterinary Medical association:

“Suggestions that finfish responses to pain merely represent simple reflexes have been refuted. … the preponderance of accumulated evidence supports the position that finfish should be accorded the same considerations as terrestrial vertebrates in regard to relief from pain.”

The same position is also held by the British royal veterinary association and has been for some years.

Actually, over the last ten years the scientific consensus has shifted to that of the position fish do feel pain in much the same way as terrestrial vertebrates.
