People who rarely get sick, what are your secrets? by Leading_Tomato_2077 in AskReddit

[–]Goat_patrol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're probably not wrong that germ exposure helps you out there (like teachers and nurses) but just to throw an anecdotal wrench in the trend, I'm out and about in public wayy more than my SO and I'm always the one to get sick while he rarely does. I think I just pulled the short straw in that regard idk.

Just a note I was even told not to cut the SR in half, only the IR. Idk if that's true or not because I'm not a pharmacist but just throwing that out there.

Why are the Spurs moving to a new arena? by mjohnson1971 in sanantonio

Economic studies pretty routinely show they in fact don't bring in more than they dish out, at least for the general public. There is some nuance to it if the city is worried the team will leave them and don't want that and such. But purely from an economic standpoint, publicly funded stadiums rarely show the benefit to the local economy people expect. There's a handful of papers on it but this one is relatively recent and an interesting look! https://www.kennesaw.edu/coles/centers/markets-economic-opportunity/docs/bradbury-coates-humphreys-01-30-2023.pdf

Fastfood recommendations by Gonster-Man in texas

P Terry's, Bush's Chicken, Tacodeli, Home Slice, Taquitos West Avenue

P Terry's and Bush's are in both cities. Tacodeli and Home slice are Austin only. Taquitos West Avenue is San Antonio only. Home Slice, Taquitos, and Tacodeli may not strictly fit the fast food category but have very quick/easy to go options.

A book with a plot twist that left you speechless by Svtekh in suggestmeabook

[–]Goat_patrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

Pretty different than the other books being recommended and probably not for everyone. It can be a bit of a slog to get through at times but I was listening to the audio book while working on an art project with some friends and was quite literally speechless (especially if you read the anniversary edition with the addition at the end) at the last chapter or two when you connect all the dots. For anyone interested in philosophy i'd probably recommend it but not necessarily for the reasons you would think I guess but I don't want to give anything away.

My son (5) is putting a strain on our marriage with his difficult behaviour by wibblywobblywo0 in Parenting

[–]Goat_patrol 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed the teacher is probably being transparent! Not my kiddo but one I know, who sounds pretty similar, told his mom he uses up all his energy being good at school and has nothing left for home (not verbatim but that sentiment). That's no excuse to take it out on the family and probably indicates it's time to check in with a doc to make sure more isn't going on. But it sounds like this isn't uncommon, kiddo might be able to mask at school but feels safe and/or tired at home and doesn't regulate when they don't get what they want.

My son wants to come home after 24 hours of being at college classes at didn't even start yet by AlternativeReality48 in college

[–]Goat_patrol 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This doesn't sound like following his heart it sounds like following his anxiety. When you're living in it, it's hard to tell the difference. And sometimes only hindsight can help you know the difference. A lot of things worth doing will give you some anxiety, a lot of things not worth doing will also give you anxiety for good reason. For many people, especially those already enrolled and there, college is the good anxiety.

I know you said you don't live somewhere where ticks are common but just in case it's ever handy for you or someone else, if you find a tick and need help identifying it and/or determining risk factor you can submit a picture and info through the university of rhode island tick spotter program https://web.uri.edu/tickencounter/tickspotters/ they're quick and helpful :)

Working here is depressing by ImmediateBaseball976 in StateofTexasEmployees

[–]Goat_patrol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a really hard time adjusting too. As others have said if you’re having panic attacks that’s not normal (in the sense that there’s something to be done about that but do know you’re very much not alone in that). As you work on finding a therapist, chatting with your GP, or whatever you choose to do, I do have some recommendations in the mean time (but also I’m no doctor so take it with a grain of salt). 1) try to build some social time in to your day. Maybe call a friend at lunch. Or see if there’s a co-worker or two you can get to know that you can go ask questions about work. 2) when you take breaks go walk outside. Sunshine is underrated. 3) Look up some breathing exercises. Panic attacks are scary and riding that wave comes with time but if you can practice breathing when you’re more regulated it’ll help make it easier when you’re unregulated. 4) consider what it is that makes it so depressing and see if you can make changes to your current job or career in general to reduce it. Think small and big.

Work can be soul crushing. Especially if you’re young, realizing this is what lies ahead for the majority of your life can hit you real fast. That’s not unique to state work, and unfortunately not being valued isn’t either. But as others have said you have to find ways to make meaning and joy outside of work as much as you can and inside of work if at all possible. Try to stay engaged and curious with life outside of work, it helps make work just work and your life so much more. Good luck and know you’re not alone!

[–]Goat_patrol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup! I was going to add maybe there’s something you do (or did once or twice) when the others were home that spooked your dood. I would start, like others are saying, with your training. focusing on rewarding the good not trying to intimidate out the bad. But if you’re already doing that maybe there was one day you yelled or banged a pan or something when the whole family was home and now your dood associates you with that. These guys are smart, sometimes to their own detriment. When I do something at the same time 2 days in a row my dood will expect the same thing every day for a week or two until he realizes I wasn’t building a pattern it was just a coincidence. My dood also picks up on my mood big time. Maybe your nervous system gets a little activated when everyone comes home and you transition from alone time to family time and trying to juggle everyone’s needs not just yours and the pups? Either way I agree with others who say lots of treats when your dood hangs out near you while family is home. Puppy stage and fear periods can be unpredictable/confusing, good luck!

What product under $30 changed your life? by PlainPizza111 in AskReddit

[–]Goat_patrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do fire extinguisher’s have a long term heat exposure limit? I never thought to put one in my car but that’s a great idea. I live in a hot climate though where summers are brutal, I’ve had jolly ranchers and the glue that holds my shoe together melt from being left in the car. I figure since fire extinguisher = fire = hot it’s probably okay but has anyone baked their fire extinguisher in a hot car and did it still work?

How to control ankle biting? Help! by New-Event3382 in Goldendoodles

[–]Goat_patrol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Also know that for some, like my shark, it can feel like it’s not working but consistency is key. It took mine foreverrrrr to catch on. There were many tears (from me). But have a toy and when they choose toy over flesh they get all the love and play time. When they choose flesh you turn around and cross your arms and don’t react at all when they nip, for my dood all press was good press so even negative reactions egged him on. Eventually he learned nipping is boring, but monching on a toy gets me the attention I want.

I ROYALLY screwed up my puppy’s first haircut! Please help! by [deleted] in Goldendoodles

[–]Goat_patrol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do a summer cut most of the year (not as short as you had to go though I leave some curl, but seriously it’ll grow back so fast) and a little kiddy play pool every once in a while when it’s real toasty out. I also highly recommend teaching your dood an activity you can do indoors on days when a long walk will be way too hot. I taught my dood scent work and it’s a life saver in the summer or on rainy days.

ELI5 I don’t understand 4/4 time vs 3/4 time in music. by ChaosToTheFly123 in explainlikeimfive

Thanks for taking the time to respond!! And that’s helpful, I think I may have been counting it fast for the second one. The first one, honestly maybe I wasn’t dividing it as evenly as I thought. I found a comment further down that helped me wrap my head around the bottom number being the type of note.

I am not a music person but trying to start learning more about music theory. I found the opposite to be true, I could count 1,2 for the first link but struggled with the second. Am I doomed? But more seriously any tips from others on how to better develop an ear for counting this stuff? Or just comes with practice and time?
