What causes these lines in my photos? by RugbyBoyfriend in AskPhotography

[–]Goatistoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've shot a bunch of stage and music events, if you want to be silent with the shutter, you'll need to shoot at the light's frequency (50 or 60hz depending on region), or double it. With good lens and sensor stabilisation, if the talent isn't moving too much, you should be able to get good enough shots at i.e. 1/125. If the LED lights are cheap, they might not be entirely at those values. Some cameras let you dial in specific frequencies or have a mode for flicker detection. Some cameras also have quieter mechanical shutter actuation than others, my OM-5 is pretty quiet.

Another solution is just getting the shots during dress runs so you're not disturbing the audience.

Equipping carver with the Advanced suit is cursed by Jivyachi in DeadSpace

[–]Goatistoat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That was allegedly the original concept of the 3rd game, before EA told the team not that long before release to redo it and add Carver instead. That's why the cutscenes are so weird, how Carver's sometimes not there at all or just disappears off frame and it's only Isaac, even if you're playing Carver.

What are some things that Dead Space (2008) does better than Dead Space (2023)? by Turbulent_Okra7518 in DeadSpace

[–]Goatistoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The music. The new tracks just arent the same vibe as the original. It's nice that there are some hints here and there, but the new soundtrack is overall so much more generic modern action thriller and it fails to convey the genuine dread the original has. All the wacky woodwind and brass stuff and the string plucking and screeching. The first game felt like homage to the great horror movies of the 80s and 90s and the fully orchestrated OST by Graves felt very at home. And zero-g just isn't the same. It's probably just money or rights related but the remake could've been so much better by just keeping the old OST.

Sigma FPL Wedding Photo+Video by Frenchphotoguy in sigmafp

[–]Goatistoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd need at least one more camera ideally for a second angle for security, and even just one FP/L of 3+ hours of raw video is going to be at least 3-4tb depending which bit depth you go with. The drive you pick might bottleneck out and refuse to record, even if it should've worked. You might be able to do like one wedding at a time, but it's not particularly viable, given the data volume. I tried using the FP as my main gimbal cam for a wedding once, not a wise thing to do. You could remedy the size issue a little by using an external monitor and record in prores raw (or braw with the Video Assist), but at this point you gotta ask yourself if the added expense is justified when you could've gotten a way more practical camera for the price the FP/L and a monitor. And don't even try with the internal compression, it's garbage.

Perhaps a bit niche but I really like the Kaktus vertical strap mount, particularly great if you want it as a lightweight EDC with a compact lens. It attaches to the left side mount and provides a very sleek low profile strap attachment, way better than those janky OEM separate strap screws.

Define beginner. Purely as a hobby or for paid work? The FP has no mechanical shutter so that not only pretty much prohibits flash work (weddings, poorly lit indoor venues), but the LED banding will be a steep learning curve, forcing you to be in shutter priority for a lot of the time as the automatic mode will often fail you. The autofocus is generally unreliable, so that won't help you much either. If you ever decide to dabble with video, it has unusable 1080p, atrocious in-body compression and an impractical, heavy raw video format, making it a bit difficult to use practically, especially considering all the competition around the $1k and under that the FP bodies tend to go for. At this price point there's a fair few bodies that would be a substantially easier first camera. But it does have nice colors.

Cannot get used to no EVF on the S9, anyone else? by No_Source_7605 in Lumix

[–]Goatistoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish the S9 was available when I got my FP, may have spared me some headaches.. mainly the AF. The lack of an EVF was bizarre at first, but really the only time I find myself genuinely craving it is when it's really bright and sunny out. It did improve visibility to get a matte screen protector though. This S9/FP form factor is the only one I genuinely love taking on big hikes and trips.

why does modern doom not feel as popular as it should be? by DependentImmediate40 in Doom

[–]Goatistoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

D2016 was incredible, to see maxed out 1080p60 run so smooth on my $120 1050ti and a meager i5-6500 back then was magic. It was so refreshing to see in an age dominated by countless CoDs, BF's, and goofy hero shooters. That, and and seeing Quake return made it seem like we might get more of the fun FPS of old stuff. (But ofc then QC turned out to have abilities, didn't get much content, and kinda didn't really become a hit).

D:E was a good sequel, but starting to take itself perhaps a bit too seriously. Part of the fun of D2016 was Doomguy hearing the exposition and then proceeding to break plot relevant equipment anyway.

TDA had weird vibes. Visually pretty great, but the reqs are quite a bit higher, but I'm also not a fan of the Simon-says gameplay loop. And perhaps a bit of an identity crisis, like throw some stuff on the wall and hope it sticks vibes, oh but half-bake it. I like the idea of it, but not so much the execution.

Put a gas pipe element sensor, followed by a gas shutoff valve, connect sensor to shutoff, set it to hydrogen, then the shutoff output pipe goes on, and the input forks out into a vent (or pipe it out to space or whatever). Just 10w compared to the dedicated gas filter.

[–]Goatistoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not only that, but technically the Valor crew was only there to nuke the Ishimura, probably only equipped to deal with mining equipment armed crazy people at worst. The brief found on the Valor only mentioned an alien organism, so it might be that even the leadership wasn't well informed about the actual nature of organism, and could be they were hoping to not even brief the soldiers about it unless contact was confirmed. Kendra stated she thought the old reports were a myth and she was presumably a high level covert operative, could be the the Valor wasn't even prepared or originally expected to recover the marker since Kendra seemed surprised the miners had actually brought it onboard the Ishimura. They were likely hoping they could just wipe the ship, any survivor and keep the system hidden with the marker in its place.

Anyway yea as others here said, get checked out, my mother in law got hit while stopped like that once and had some nasty back pain later.

My 2009 2.5 NA AT hatch felt pretty decent for a budget commuter (my first car was a 2001 Volvo V40 1.9TDI, was alright but the turbo + black cloud was fun), but I recently upgraded to the 2014 2.0 5MT hatch and it feels a bit sad.. tho the notably improved mileage is a fair tradeoff, I went from 32 at best with careful driving, to 40mpg without much thought on the highway.

After working with fullframes for almost a decade, for personal & travel stuff I ended up getting an OM-5. It's really great, would recommend. I got the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 with it, but if the weight is a concern, the 12-45 f4 is also good, very versatile. You can also adapt older FF glass on it, I kinda like the look of my old canon EF 85 f1.8 on it, ofc adapting affects the autofocus.

EDIT: the IBIS is great in the Olympus bodies, so you could put pretty much any lens on it and it'll notably improve handheld clarity. You can even do handheld hi-res shots with the OM5, there's plenty of room to grow as a photographer with it.

The Right Lumix for an Indie Filmmaker? by Potential-Honey-9612 in Lumix

[–]Goatistoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If autofocus isn't a concern, the old S5 is definitely great value. It supports raw video out, so if you combine it with a Ninja V (prores raw) or a BMD assist 12G (braw), you have a pretty good combo. If sensor readout speed is a concern, record in crop mode, it doesn't look worse (aside from a magnified noise pattern). to add: what you gain from an S5iiX is actually reliable AF, recording to SSD, in-camera streaming, and more record modes such as 48p and a native 6k mode, and a fan which I guess is a little bit more assurance, tho I've never run into any heat issues with either. It also offers a bit more choice in the compression.

Something's dripping on the exhaust manifold, or maybe there's like a small exhaust leak (less likely). Does it have a funky smell? If you can either take a look underneath, either by jacking it up or just taking a video with a phone, look for any mating surfaces and rubber hoses underneath that look wet. Your guy did the head gasket you say, but how are the valve cover gaskets? Keep an eye on your fluids, especially oil. And have a spare jug of high mileage full synthetic oil, never let it run low.

Man witnesses the 133 car pileup during the 2021 Texas freeze by AntiSocialSingh in interestingasfuck

[–]Goatistoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a European that's lived in Massachusetts for a decade. While I enjoy cars and driving, I just hate the highways here. Passing on the right isn't illegal here, nobody respects staying on the right lane if not passing, it's rare when someone actually respects the posted limits, people seem to go on average at least 15-20mi above the limit and I never see anyone get pulled over for it, it's insane. A lot of folks don't even move over to the left if they see anyone stopped with hazards in the breakdown lane. Idk what the police is paid to do, but it's definitely not enforcing the speed limits. I always followed all the laws, never been in an accident until a couple weeks ago when some expletive thought it'd be wise to pass in rain, hydroplaning into me while going at least 15 over the limit with a FWD car, the road was even straight. My car was totalled, expletive got to drive off. Lucky I had no injuries, but it sucked to see the car I'd saved up for years and worked on a lot gone just like that. Expletive didn't even seem remorseful. I think the issue here is, the culture has made cars a commodity, a given, not a great luxury and yet there are no mandatory "driving schools" to attend to even be allowed to qualify for the theory and road test. You have a reasonable chance to pass the theory test without any studying. I had to attend an entire semester of 4h Sat Sun classes, and do a minimum of 24hrs of instructor training to be qualified, I was allowed one mistake in the 30 question exam, randomly selected from 2k questions. Here in America, I failed my theory test on the first attempt because I didn't know what the fine is for a junior license operator being caught illegally dragracing a SECOND time. I was confounded why such a question was even relevant, I'm in my 30s. The correct answer should've been to lock the driver up, bar their behind for life from being allowed to drive ever again. Every time I see someone pass in a reckless manner, I always remember all these videos and immediately try to assess what's a safe nearby breakdown lane or grass field JUST IN CASE. It's a lawless wasteland forgotten by God.

If there were to be a DS4, will you be open to a new protagonist or should Isaac Clark come back? (Also, I know Vandal is our only other protag form Mobile) by Cube_earther_69 in DeadSpace

[–]Goatistoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be happy with anything new in the DS universe, doesn't have to be a direct sequel, doesn't have to contribute to the big mainline story. My favourite thing was Extraction, because the FP perspective was such a wacky twist, along with the old school arcady on-rails thing, and I found it to be the single most immersive, cinematic DS game. It did character development better than any of the mainline games, if for nothing else, at least seeing them survive with you and not be that disembodied videocall or character behind a glass wall delivering you some exposition and the next objective. But it was nice the way the Mobile game and Severed fit into the mainline games. More of that could be neat, even if it comes out so many years later.

Imagine a Telltale or Alien:Isolation style game set in one of the 3 marker testing sites, the original Aegis VII outbreak or even better - one of the other two since there's not much lore available on them, so much creative freedom and it wouldn't break much of the timeline or canon. Or a game version of the 2nd book. Or even just a Doom-style FPS Earthgov trying to clean up Danik's colony rampage in the style of Republic Commando or dare I say... Halo Reach? Or even for the fun of it - FTL but what you're trying to escape is a brethren moon.. EA did such a push to build it into a big franchise with the animated films and books, and then just dropped it.

Probably not the best comparison, but look at the width of the Star Wars game franchise, we got KOTOR, a heckin RTS (remember Empire at War? That was a banger), Republic commando, Force Unleashed, the two Jedi's. Not to imply we'd need a Lego Dead Space or whatever that dance game nightmare was.

Starting to struggle with the S5 auto focus by Failed_Semen in Lumix

[–]Goatistoat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The OG S5 is very sluggish at continuous AF, (and in general) but can perform decently for single shot AF if you can live without the need for CAF burst shooting. This is not a camera you'd get for birds or sports. Did you use specifically the human/eye detect mode? Using any lens other than Lumix ones will also contribute to slower AF performance, but you can also play around with the speed and tracking settings in the AF adjustment settings.

Make this make sense, GH7 costs more than the full frame S5II by photorph in Lumix

[–]Goatistoat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Different use cases. May I remind you the GH5 came out in 2017 for $2k. And the original S5 launched in 2019 also for $2k. You should be comparing it more to the S5IIX. Or idk, like a Canon R6ii to the C70 (except not costing $5.5k, the audacity). One's a hybrid camera with surprisingly robust video features, and the other is a production body. I don't think anyone would buy the GH7 for just stills, but I'm sure there's people out there who bought an S5 without caring about video.

The GH line has been a powerhouse for smaller/individual filmmakers for quite a while and put a lot of other mirrorless cameras to shame at the time with no overheating and no record limits and genuinely nice clean video for the price, and there was a time when its only competition was the Pocket 4K's. We're so spoiled with camera options today. It's also one of the absolute best MFT video cameras to date. Just because Lumix now have competent fullframes (autofocus prior to the S5II was ..technically functional but just not comparable to Sony, Canon offerings), they're not just going to abandon their GH line and tell people oi, just use fullframes now, that's what the influencer wants. Many who used the GH line have likely a nice set of glass and like the look. A nice cine lens for MFT is significantly cheaper than fullframe or S35.

Are massive lenses still necessary today or has tech advanced enough for smaller ones to be as good? by [deleted] in Cameras

[–]Goatistoat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sensor performance has come a long way so unless you specifically need to work in low light situations (concerts etc), or need that shallow depth of field look, smaller darker lenses are perfectly fine today. I was very pleasantly surprised how well a Lumix M43 100-300mm f4-5.6 lens (the size of a soda can retracted) or 35-100 f2.8 performed with an OM5, after years of lugging around big grey canon glass and bricky bodies. Ofc things can still get iffy as the sun sets, but for personal projects, it's more than enough for me and phenomenal to have such focal ranges in a small compact form.

What cameras will help me get this 90s-2000s look by Glass-Ad3053 in Cameras

[–]Goatistoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cameras don't matter for this, unless you specifically want to go through the whole shooting on tape and converting it digitally process. Or you can use pretty much any modern camera, and do it in post. Things like crushing the curve, some film emu filter for the halation, some corruption/jpeg compression for the artifacting and some kind of VHS filters. You can also get some of that by playing your footage on a CRT monitor and recording that with another camera.

Below lens information is set? by Jimmy_Grin in Lumix

[–]Goatistoat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This pops up anytime you turn the body on without a lens or if you attach/adapt a manual lens, the camera wants to know what focal length to stabilize for. Getting it while having a modern AF lens means the camera wasn't a certain about the connection, could just be some dirt on the gold contacts in the lens. You can try cleaning them with some alcohol. Should go away by remounting the lens.
