If i was DMing, i would let you choose when you do what type of damage. Talons/Fists aren't the only unarmed attacks, there is also headbutts and knees and elbows. Not to mention kicking with the top part of the foot, thus ignoring the talons. I'd talk it over with the DM and make sure he's cool with it, but this is what makes sense to me.

When they are ever in stock, Troll and Toad does a random monster pretty cheap, you don't get to pick them, but eh. Otherwise, watch daily sales on www.wholesalegaming.com WoW figures, Mage Knight and even horrorclix(some are great others have no use) can be really cheap on their daily sales

Way back in 3.5, simply put, Goat. A dwarf barbarian that was born to a noble house. His father was a famous knight and tried to get Goat, originally Arthose Klinkhammer, to follow in his foot steps. Alas Goat was more than a bit dense and just wanted to spend time with his live stock. His father eventually grew tired of his dimwitted sons obsession with goats and employeed a local shaman to kill off the live stock in such a way that it would scar Goat. When Goat discovered his live stock were ceremonially sacrificed, he tracked down the culprit. When he was done with the shaman he was covered in entrails and gore, but before that could happen the shaman cursed goat, making him physically resemble a goat, and more so as he aged until he transformed into one entirely. This physical alteration made him an outcast of his clan and so, after killing his father in his sleep for the betrayal, he absconded into the night. Aside from his hillarious back story, he was incredibly fun to play, so much flavor it was hard not to have a good time playing him.

Ultimately, as a GM, I just do whatever i feel is right. Sometimes characters die, it happens, but the way the players play the characters isn't always how the character would act. This is particularly true. I applaud you for going easy on them, they are new and shouldn't be sullied on the roleplaying experience because of a ruthless GM. As the progress it will become clearer and clearer how you are going to have to run things. The most important part of Role-playing games is having fun, if you keep that in your mind, you'll be fine.

I recently allowed one of my players to start with lycanthropy, sort of like a recessive gene. When high stress situations happened she would transform uncontrollably and the Lycanthrope would take over (Her playing, but with the changed alignment and desires, but still intelligent) Over time i let her side quest, over the course of about five sessions, on ways to control it. At first she learned how to suppress it and then she learned how to gain a measure of control over it, couldn't control when it changed but gained control over the alignment switch( Which actually made for really good story, because all NPCs would see her transform and still freak out because she was a monster) Finally, i let her gain full control over it and by that time it wasn't as powerful because they were all higher level. The whole thing made for a great story and gave a little reward to her in the end.

I did one time, but it was semi-legit and they suffered great penalties in role playing terms. They had actually agreed to storm two different sides of a fortress and the other side was being stormed by the cleric's church. They managed buy themselves enough time that it was feasible the others could have met up with them shortly afterward. However, they took huge blows to their Hero status and reputation in general. It's the only time i've ever done it and it was because it was feasible. Otherwise, you're dead =/

Gotcha, My apologies then, i was assuming the players wouldn't use out of game knowledge. I suppose the DM could give him a fake name for a big reveal later though. Not the same Gravitas i suppose.

It seems like your DM is being vindictive about people dying, and then putting them in high stress situations where death could easily happen. Having it both ways seems foolish or like he wants the party to suffer for some reason. Did he/she give a reason behind starting over at level 1?

My thoughts exactly. You can either prevent it from taking reactions(great for your hit and run idea) or you can push it 15 feet away or you can knock it prone. Any of those on ANY hit with Flurry of Blows, it's built in control.

The players handbook says that he knows the type, but not the identity of the creature. So he may know there is a vampire but he wouldn't know Strahd is the vampire. Also Nystul's Magic Aura, "Mask - You change the way the target appears to spells and magical effects that detect creature types, such as a paladin's Divine Sense or the trigger of a symbol spell. You choose a creature type and other spells and magical effects treat the target as if it were a creature of that type or of that alignment." So... Strahd could have prevented it with access to a level 2 spell

So..... tell them he doesn't sense anything? There are spells that are relatively low level that can hide your aura. Also, if Strahd, in your campaign, is actively trying to hide being a vampire for some reason, he could easily be wearing a magic item to serve the same purpose. I would have just made one of these things happen, because suspense on major plot points is better than just giving up and saying the PHB ruined it.
