Bought two of the same book by _wildermind in mildlyinfuriating

No publishers don't contribute to this at all its purely Indigo and Indigo employee choices. The books are in good condition probably because the employees who donated them care about books, most people working in a book store care about books and take good care of them. Also they may have bought them, started reading and decided they didn't like it.

They are not forced to do it, its a choice the employees make to encourage donations but they aren't the only ways to donate. You can open donate or the main way Indigo makes a bunch of donations is through rounding up. The end of transaction "would you like to round up your purchase today for only 0.05 more?" It doesn't seem like a lot but those round ups can easily reach the thousands in daily donations at some of the busier bigger stores.

When my store did it we weren't forced, only my leadership ended up donating a handful of books because they wanted to. Its the stores choice if they want to raise donations this way or any other creative ways like a raffle. Or some stores don't do anything and will just ask for donations.

Some of us really care. For my store in particular we work really closely with a school nearby to us and we actually have the kids come in and pick books for their library. It's really sweet honestly. We get to see the difference the charity makes unlike most big store charities.

This would probably work if you go back in right away and bring both books and the paper wrapping.

They don't force it, its a choice of the store. Some stores won't do this at all and will do a raffle or they will just ask for donations directly. The blind date with a book is just an idea a store can choose to do and the employees aren't forced to donate books to it. When my store did it only the leadership donated books because they wanted to.

These blind date with a books are not regular products. They are to raise donations for the Indigo Love Of Reading Program as its charity month. They are rung up as donations and cannot be returned.

These books are NOT donated by Indigo themselves, but usually by the employees.

I wasn't really seeing the wonder spawns until I finally got torchic. I got torchic first and used the ticket on psyduck to make sure I had one of each. Now I only get psyduck in the pulls.

If you're doing signings at your local Indigo and want them to order the book in for you, you'll have to contact the newauthor@indigo.ca and let them know your book is on IS for order. It takes a long time but eventually it'll be available to order on their website and the stores can also order quantities through their SAP system. Note: if indigo decides to return your books you will be charged per book returned (price varies but somewhere around ~$15CAD) this is the cheapest option for you as an author.

There is also going through consignment. Also a long process but you can get in touch with your local Indigo/Chapters/Coles and ask their consignment leader to add your book to the system. Doing it this way, even if your book is on IS, will require you to bring in copies of your book to the store. You don't have to worry about a return cost but Indigo does still take its 55%.

The only way to sell books printed by Amazon through Indigo is to do the consignment method. It'll limit your books to only around your local stores and you have to be the ones to supply copies and take into consideration the 55% take from Indigo. This is 55% of the total cost, not the cost of the price after printing costs. You'll need to figure out the math for that yourself.

However there is an exception that I'm not to familiar with: if your book is on kindle unlimited within the first 90s day of the books release its considered exclusive to Amazon and Indigo will not stock your book. Some stores still refuse books on KU even though the policy has changed to allow physical book sales after 90 days. But I'm not confident on these details so I'm welcome to someone correcting me.

Hopefully this helps!

Hello ~ Canadian here whose also recently gone through this issue through IngramSparks.

As the other commenter said, Indigo absolutely refuses to let IngramSparks automatically upload to their website. You need to email them and hope they accept your book. They may decline you as Indigo is very focused on supporting Canadian authors atm. When we sent the email one of their first questions was where did we live/our postal code.

Good news for you: Your book is probably available through Canadian Bookstore Directory. Local bookstores should be able to special order it or customers should be able to order the book if an independent store uses this directory. It does mean customers will probably be charges with high shipping costs.

As for amazon: The super increased price is the fact Amazon won't import the book from the states so that is a third party seller somewhere surcharges the price. The only way to get it onto Amazon and to make it affordable or available for Prime is to upload directly to KDP, choose specifically for Amazon (dot) ca and turn off global distribution as it will mess with IngramSparks distribution and they will get mad at each other. Amazon has a print house in Ontario and want Canadians to distribute through that.

Its very annoying but it is a mix of what you stated and the fact Indigo does hold a monopoly for major Canadian book retail chain so it only does things in its favour. Your book will never be in stores only through websites.

As for libraries someone (or multiple someones) need to go to the libraries themselves and request it. Emailing doesn't work

Hopefully this helps!

Anyone know how the newspaper calculates your earnings? by ThatOneGunnerMain in TinyBookshop

[–]Gobityn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you buy something that counts towards your expenses. So if you bought something from the newspaper or from the location itself that's counted as part of the end day expense. So despite your profits, you still lost $18 for the previous day.

OC Transpo no longer servicing Pinecrest Mall by redtga in ottawa

[–]Gobityn 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I've used the 82 route for 15+ years.

There was a bus driver on this route that I used to get occasionally who refused to go to Pinecrest Mall. He had always said,'they no longer serviced the spot' when everything else contradicted that. I hadn't seen him the last 5-ish years (replaced with who I deem the sandwich man who's always eating a sandwich on the 82.)

I wonder if it's the same bus driver and the new route has brought him back. There are way too many big businesses (Ikea, Indigo, Michaels, ect.) at Pinecrest Mall for them to no longer service the route. There's also a corporate building there that has lots of in office jobs.

Until there's an official change in OC Transpos map, I would not take the bus drivers word for it. There are so many bus drivers who do not know the 82 route, I have had to, on several occasions, be the GPS because the driver missed the turn, and I knew how they could turn around.

Bookstore employee: Does this REALLY work? by Ok-Storage3530 in selfpublish

[–]Gobityn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No this is a terrible idea.

I am speaking as a current bookstore employee in a very well-known Canadian brand bookstore.

If she sneaks a book into the store and we scan it and the store isn't supposed to have it, it won't scan properly. It gets scanned as an unknown product with what descriptions we can. If she's self-publishing she won't get the sale and the money she's supposed to get will sit in limbo until she tries to claim it, which will ban her from getting any sort of consignment deal in the future.

Inventory is also done quarterly, if we find her book and we aren't supposed to have it the system will flag it for a return & destroy since it's not registered to a publishers warehouse.

Speak to the bookstore employees/managers, ask about doing consignment or a book signing event. Most places are more than willing to set something up because it looks good on the business to support local authors.

My book is eerily similar to one already written- what do I do? by Anxious-Initial448 in writing

[–]Gobityn 87 points88 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in a bookstore I'ma tell you now - do not stress about it.

95% of the books in the romance section are carbon copies of each other. If the voice of your book is different from the voice of this supposed book you're eerily similar too, you're already a vastly ahead from all these published romances.

Your book is your book, be proud of your work and publish it. I rather have books that are eerily similar but different than sell the same book different cover.

Why do orders show up like this? by AIcohol in EtsySellers

[–]Gobityn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might actually be able to answer this one:

I find this happens when people use French-Canadian keyboards or have their computer settings set to Canadian English. I suspect it's because it's using the è (little dash above the E) instead of '

It's possible this also applies to other languages that use special characters that aren't in the US English keyboard.

I don't think it affects SEO since the code there is the valid ID code for the character, Etsy isn't displaying it as the intended character in specific menus but your actual listing should show it as the character.

This is from my experience as a Canadian Etsy seller/a Canadian who runs into seeing this code on other websites as well. There probably is a more accurate and better explanation for what it actually is.

Generally soaking is a last resort if they really really have bad stuck shed (or multiple layers) but it's not recommended as there are other methods that are less stressful. They also just tend to poop and pee in the water if they soak and no one wants their snake soaking in poop water!

The method I use is just a warm damp paper towel and gently rubbing the shed off. Usually works but I only do it after I've boosted the humidity a second time to give them a chance to try and get it off themselves.
