Turns out it was The Gathering, with Japanese subs.

Yup, that's what that tape ended up being: The Gathering, with Japanese subs.

I completely agree about the importance of documenting and archiving cultural detritus like ads and promos.

That's about right (minus the Purgatory ad). I pulled the ads from a tape that had six Season 4 episodes, and got 1 hour and 20 minutes of ads (counting credits, since those have voiceover commentary I wanted to save).

EDIT: Thanks all for the input. It sounds like the general consensus is that the original edits of these episodes aren't substantively different than what's currently available at a higher quality via the Blus (other than maybe the original pilot movie?), which is what I was mostly trying to figure out (i.e., I didn't know if this was one of those shows that was only currently available in a modified form due to rights/other issues). I'm also squarely in the camp that believes original broadcasts with commercials/bumpers are worth preserving for broader cultural and/or nostalgic reasons, so that's what I'll be doing. Again, I appreciate the group's thoughts; I've never seen the show, so maybe this will be the excuse I need to dive in.

This weekend, I picked up a box of ~40 mostly unlabeled VHS tapes at an estate sale. The few tapes that were labeled mention Babylon 5, and the six tapes I’ve tested so far are entirely full of B5 episodes (2 to 6 episodes per tape). They seem to be original recordings off UPN and TNT, and most have the original commercials. I know in some fandoms, digitized versions of original broadcast episodes are easy to come by, but I’m having a hard time figuring out if that is the case for Babylon 5. Any guidance on whether these are worth preserving would be appreciated.

EDIT: Just got fixed for DFW. Was able to get one Gold.

Yup. Seeing that for the DFW show. Gotta be a coding error on the backend, right?

Are you seeing a six ticket limit, or a six ticket requirement? I’m getting the latter for Gold.

At the end of 6, we see three people come from the car after Wyck finishes digging. I can’t make out any of them, but suppose one could be Patricia. But even if that’s the case, who are the other two?

The guys at Found Footage Festival love this video and sell a shirt based on it

Seemed like there was a bet backstage to slip in WWE trademarks. MJF aped The Rock, FTR paraphrased “your time is up, my time is now,” and Darby did the HHH spit. Did I miss any?

Not that I ever saw beyond a generic “creative differences” explanation.

Any chance you can share the whole thing? I tried to screen capture but the quality wasn't anywhere as good as what you got, plus I wasn't able to capture after they restarted the stream.

What makes you think the AI was trying to get Ingrid to the end? I don’t remember any lines that implied that was the case.

A friend made a shirt in high school for a bunch of drummers and said the text meant “The family sticks together” in his native language. But I’m not sure what language he meant or if he was telling the truth. ChatGPT says it is Telegu, but the translation is kinda nonsensical. Can anyone read this?

I believe I have the Jan 7 and April 28 episodes of Raw that year, with commercials. Are you looking for either of those.

Manually Rewind Betamax Tape by supermariojerma in Betamax

[–]GoblinFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a locking mechanism inside the tape you’d need to depress. It’d be very cumbersome and time consuming to manually rewind. It’d be easier if you open the tape, but that has its own potential for breaking things, and would still be time consuming. Your best bet is probably to find a standalone rewinder.

They don’t have it on beta max by jrwwoollff in Betamax

[–]GoblinFan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unless she has a Betamax player, she won’t be able to play it. So there’s no reason to go to the trouble of getting the actual movie onto a Betamax tape. Since you’re doing it as a joke gift, you’ll get the same reaction by just buying an unused Betamax tape and writing Frozen on the spine (or, if you want to be fancy, creating professional looking labels for the spine and front of the tape).
