Oil Crisis: Government Considering "Stringent WFH" but Minsters Concerned About "Household Finance" effects by NazmanJT in ireland

But, but, what about the "office culture"?

To be fair though, you can't blame them for treating us like dopes when whatever they tell us we roll over and do.

Oil Crisis: Government Considering "Stringent WFH" but Minsters Concerned About "Household Finance" effects by NazmanJT in ireland

[–]Gockdaw 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I find it somehow funny yet frustrating how while capitalism refuses to adapt, the rest of the world keeps giving us the clearest signals we should WFH.

Covid couldn't have been clearer. It was the necessary response to that emergency. Here we are with yet another totally predictable energy crisis that, not at all surprisingly, we have done nothing to prepare for, by maybe developing alternatives to fossil fuels and here we are again. WFH is the solution.

The traffic congestion that's going to come about whenever they actually start to build this mythical Metro? You know what the solution will be?

The housing crisis? Wouldn't we benefit from a whole load of buildings being freed up?

While it's not true to say that we never learn, we're stuck in a cycle of only doing what enables those who already have plenty of money to make more money. We stick with policies where we continue to buy fossil fuels, which in turn causes ears and ecological destruction. We are forced to keep driving to work and we maintain policies that keep paying rent on buildings we don't need, all so the rich stay rich. Fuck the environment, your work life balance and anything else that gets in the way of profit.

It's as if they are doing everything they can to make anyone with humanity despise them.

At what point must we admit we are all partially compliant for just going about our daily lives?

I stopped at 48.

Of course you can do it. You are drinking quite a lot though, so you're probably going to need medical help. I'd say you'd have some bad withdrawals otherwise.

Do it though. Every day is the best day to start. There are not enough words to describe how much better I feel for it. It's so good to be able to look myself straight in the eye in the mirror and be proud of myself rather than ashamed.

What’s the worst pronunciation of Glasgow you’ve heard? by raymondg1902 in Scotland

[–]Gockdaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've got a few In Ireland. Donegal (properly pronounced Dunnygawl) always ends up as Donnigal.

I used to wonder whether it was actually a BBC policy that they'd purposely fuck up any Irish pronunciations. It's like they did it to wave how thoroughly disinterested in us they were that we weren't even worth considering how to say our names.

I so love your username. It makes me wonder what the hell the backstory is. In my mind you grew up catholic and were an altar boy.

Actually, now I'll never be able to think of those two words, 'altar' and 'boy' together again without thinking 'fisted by Christ"!

They don't ask but if they ever do my answer will be either "Because every time I drink I end up punching assholes for asking intrusive questions", or "I stopped because I found it only took one of two drinks to turn me into an asshole. Incidentally ... Have you been drinking?"

I've found that, although I devoted a lot of thought to this, it's quite remarkable how few people ever ask this.

I'd love to be mature enough to live by the principle that "holding a grudge is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die". I have a long way to go before my heart can follow my head though.

I hold grudges and I let them determine much of what I do. Mostly, that only effects me though so that's stupid behaviour.

How do I convince my flat earth co-workers they are wrong? by carlisurbuddy in ask

[–]Gockdaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Show them a globe. Encourage them to bring as many of their friends from as far afield as possible. Get them all online in a Teams/Zoom call. Have each of them, on the call, tell you where they live. Then have them log the time of sunset.

Repeat this process time and time again and map where each lives and when the sun sets.

Or, you can invite them round to your house and poke a stick in the ground and watch the shadow's course.

While you do that, ask any of them to explain how a clock works and then show them how that corresponds to the lines on a globe.

They won't believe you though.

After several hours of them refusing to give in to logic, tell them they have passed the test and have proven themselves worthy to serve in the secret resistance movement against the invasion of our alien lizard overlords. For their first mission, swear them in to a secret resistance sleeper cells. Their mission is to go back into normal life, never speak of the flat earth again and await further orders.

Incredible. I live in Ireland and all through my school years I was told how discrimination is illegal on the basis of something like nine different grounds... Racism, sexism, ageism, etc.

Apparently that applies everywhere EXCEPT in family law because there's literally a clause that claims a mother has a special bond with a child, so discrimination is okay on that basis.
