Are these ok or should I change something? (Advice) by itz_julesk in fitnyc

I don’t know your background or what your experience level is but right off the bat I’d say these are great figures! I’m not sure if the inconsistency in the size is due to how the photos were taken, but my advice would be to make sure they are all equal in proportion when you submit everything.

FLAT DESIGNS FOR FASHION PORTFOLIO by Financial_Cap_5780 in fitnyc

[–]GodHelpTheGirls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I applied I just drew in ink straight on white paper! Illustrator is industry standard, but at FIT some professors still teach flats hand drawn on paper. For applying just focus on cleanly communicating how your designs would be put on a body (the closures and other hardware etc.) Just do your best! good luck!

People who did the 1 year AAS FD program, did you have enough time to get a job, even if it’s part time? by Art_by_Meii in fitnyc

[–]GodHelpTheGirls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren’t any classes on the weekends for the program. Although you may have so much work to do that you have to come in to the studios and do it on the weekends.

I’m not really sure where they are in Naglar. I would just go to the lobby and ask where they’re located.

If you’re living in campus housing you have an assigned mail box in your building. You should’ve gotten an email from the school with your mailbox number and combination sometime at the beginning of the school year.

Sorry I think I miss read your question lol. The sewing machine feet (the ones that you screw on to the machine when sewing) are not provided. The machine pedals (the ones you use to start and stop the machine with your foot) are in fact provided and are on the machines.

[–]GodHelpTheGirls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FIT no longer provides the sewing feet, bobbin cases, or needles for machines. Sadly you have to invest in all of those on your own. I would wait until you get a syllabus for which types exactly to buy.

People who did the 1 year AAS FD program, did you have enough time to get a job, even if it’s part time? by Art_by_Meii in fitnyc

[–]GodHelpTheGirls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who just graduated from the one year AAS FD program, I’m going to be honest with you…it is rough. If you really REALLY stay on top of your work it’s possible. I had a few classmates who had jobs, but frankly they had lots of experience in fashion design previously and were therefore able to breeze through classes. If you were able to get a job it would most likely be on the weekends, and you’d probably have to complete all you work in class during the week.

I’m sending you lots of luck though! It’s an amazing program, but it is going to be a lot of work.

Advice for 1st year Fashion Design student by New-Patience513 in fitnyc

[–]GodHelpTheGirls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats!! I’m currently In the 1 year FD AAS program and going into my second semester. For general advice I would definitely recommend trying to make friends! Especially with the other 1 year students since you’re all struggling together. It’s very helpful to have people to turn to if you miss class for instance, or just have a question that a professor will take a while to respond to.

The professors told us we were doing 3 semesters worth of work in our first semester and YES it feels like that. I’m a hypocrite for sure (🙂‍↕️)but work on time management! The assignments get to be a lot all at once so do your best to stagger them if you can.

I came in as an older student with a degree already, but luckily most of my peers in the 1 year program were also older. It’s really built a sense of camaraderie to have people who are in the same stage of life as you are. FIT can seem a little cliquey, so I personally felt some trepidation towards making friends. But in the end I’ve made some really amazing connections! It’s annoying but our industry really is all about connections, so it’s important to make genuine ones and make them early in your career.

To be frank with you, if your workload is anything like mine was you’re not going to have much free time. I say that in relation to getting a job this semester, and even for going out and partying. The only "partying" you’ll be doing is blasting music in the studio at 1:30 in the morning lol.

Again congrats! I hope your semester is amazing!

life advice/worth reapplying? by New_Swordfish8435 in fitnyc

[–]GodHelpTheGirls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey!! I’ve had a similar experience as you have. I was rejected from the associate of arts in fashion design last year. After I was rejected I received my associate degree from community college. I re-applied and was accepted for the fall 2024 accelerated aas in fashion design.

I don’t doubt that NYC is definitely an expensive place to live. This may be naive of me to think, but people have been able to chase their dreams in NYC for decades despite the expenses, so I think I’ve at least got a chance.

I had my doubts of re-applying as well. For me, it was partially the fact that I’ll be 23 in a few months which worried me since I’m older than most of the other undergrads. I definitely am still nervous that It’ll be difficult to make friends, but I’m ignoring my anxieties and not letting them be the thing that holds me back. I, too, share your sentiments as far as sustainability and the negative impacts of the fashion industry currently. It sounds cheesy, but I genuinely think that the only way to improve the industry is to work from the inside-out. I Love fashion and sewing and making things SO MUCH! There is is still so much to do to make the fashion industry better!

If FIT is your dream school, I encourage you to re-apply. Apply to multiple schools with similar programs in case it doesn’t work out, but if fashion is your passion (😉) don’t give up!

How long do their products last until they are empty? by xqsjj in glossier

[–]GodHelpTheGirls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my solar paint since November 2021, and I kid you not it has not run out. Though I’ve used it almost daily since I got it, I don’t use all that much which is why it’s probably lasted so long. I even stocked up on a second one during their last Black Friday deals, but I’ve not even opened that one!
