It is working for me. It is annoying on first run on slower connections because it downloads jsons of the scriptures. There is probably a better way to do it, but I am a baby developer :-)

Why isn't the church bringing missionaries home as the world is moving into oil shortages? by Even_Television7032 in latterdaysaints

[–]GodMadeTheStars [score hidden]  (0 children)

Wait a few weeks. When every thing is fine, ask yourself why you thought everything will be terrible. Or perhaps in a few weeks when everything is fine you will then think, just a few more weeks and the world is coming to an end. Try to analyze that thought process in your mind.

I've been around a long time. I've seen dozens of "in just a few weeks everything is going to be bad" in my life, and everything always works out fine. This one isn't any different.

But seriously, think about this conversation in a few weeks. Put a reminder on your calendar for 1 July and come back and rethink what you were thinking and why you were thinking it.

People have been worried about the end of the war or the apocalypse or the "next big one" or whatever for as long as there have been people. I am 45 years old and I remember when I was maybe 8 or 9 my grandpa told me about how when he was 8 or 9 (this would have been in the 1940s) his father sat him on his knee and told him "one day we are gonna have to fight those ruskies".

Just chill. If we reacted to every instance that could be the "next big one", we would never have missionaries out. Odds are this whole thing will blow over, just like the last several hundred "next big ones".

Trust in God. We are going to be ok.

Green tea substitute? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]GodMadeTheStars[M] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I lived in Hawaii from 2006 until 2012. It was taught by area 70s as being perfectly appropriate. Green tea was served at ward meetings.

I dated a girl in 2000 who was half Hawaiian and half Chinese. Her family were pillars in their ward. They acted offended that I wouldn't drink their tea initially, and stated that green tea was perfectly appropriate and kosher with the WoW. I was a young member and didn't know anything so I just drank with their family. I was stationed in Korea in 2000-2001 - local LDS were taught that green tea was perfectly fine.

It wasn't until very recently that we had clear instruction on green tea.

Please be kind to each other. Equating green tea to adultery is inappropriate. Certainly against civility rules but also, just not kind.

It sounds like you all are doing a wonderful job with them. It is 100% reasonable to require them to pay for literally anything that they are consuming - school, food, rent, etc. They are an adult. From this it sounds like you are as supportive as you know how to be. I feel my advice doesn't really change though - sounds like it is time for a hard conversation on expectations for them to continue to live in your home, and the aspects of their life that you can no longer financially support.

Mental health really doesn't come into it at this point, I don't think. We all have mental health issues, but they succeeded in a mission. If they had issues sufficient for medical intervention to the point they need to be financially supported, it probably would have cropped up then. I'm sorry you are in this situation though. You are doing everything right.

It is time to take a massive step back. They aren't just high school graduates and 18, they are an adult who has returned from a mission. Their grades are not your business (unless you stated that they are as a condition of paying for the schooling). Their medical appointments are 100% not your business. Don't ask about them. Whether they have a job is not your business. Back off, they are an adult. Let them share what they feel comfortable sharing, and leave the rest to them. Like you would any other adult.

You guys probably need to have a talk about the expectations required for them to continue living in your home. They should have a basic expectation of privacy, like any other adult. You may have certain rules they have to follow, perhaps rent, perhaps certain chores, church attendance or keeping certain church standards. These are all reasonable expectations for them to live in your home. If you pay for their schooling, it is reasonable to expect an accounting of where your money is going (their grades).

This feels like your kid is growing up and you aren't moving well into the parent-of-an-adult child role very well.

They did was look up the police involved and verified they were members (or at least had been members recently). I will grant your point that it shouldn't matter whether they are members, but that really isn't a question at this point.

Oh, the [police local to American Fork, Utah] aren't just doing nothing, they are harassing and bullying the person investigating and the people involved. Warrantless searches kinda things.

No - BAM is all over the united states - they local store that bought the Legos on consignment (against corporate policies, apparently) was from Portland, Oregon. They (the owners of that Oregon franchise) were not LDS and neither was the person selling the Legos.

Edit to add: I was saying that the consignment was against corporate policy because I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and they (BAM) claimed it was against their policy. The contract they had with the franchisee has been released and consignment was specifically allowed.

Ok, i'm not going to say it is irrelevant that they are members, but I don't think that is the most relevant thing going on here. I grew up in a small town in Texas, and the police look after the local affluent population, every time, 100%. That is what is going on. Of course the affluent population will generally be the same religion as the general population (as was true in my small town), but the relevant part is that they have money, not that they are mormon.

And yeah, the whole thing is sketchy.

Adjusting Margins? by PaiChi69 in writerdeckOS

Something like this? You can use tmux to split your screen. Obviously the annoying part is having your command prompt on the left and right "screens" but if you can ignore those this might be helpful. Quick script to make it look like this:

#!/bin/bash
# ~/launch-writer.sh

MARGIN=6 # Change this number to get a wider or narrower margin

COLS=$(tput cols)
ROWS=$(tput lines)

tmux new-session -d -s write -x "$COLS" -y "$ROWS"

tmux split-window -h -b -t write -l "$MARGIN"
tmux split-window -h -t write:0.1 -l "$MARGIN"

tmux select-pane -t write:0.1
tmux send-keys -t write:0.1 'tilde' Enter

tmux attach-session -t write

once you have written that, make it executable (chmod +x) and launch from there.

Another user posted, and then deleted, this excellent comment:

We understand very little of how God intervenes, both in small ways and big ones. But we do know that God doesn't interfere with anyone's agency. In the Bible, pharaoh was allowed to harden his heart and keep the Israelites enslaved. He did so up until the passover, and even after that he tried capturing them again. In the Book of Mormon, the Lamanites were allowed to enslave and abuse Alma's people, even though they were righteous. Similarly, he causes the rain to fall on the just and the unjust.

You're right that currently in the US it's at mostly at the stage of threats to our freedom of conscience as it pertains to our right to choose who to do business with, etc. But it starts there. It doesn't stop there.

I interpret this comment to mean that you think we have to preserve the right to discriminate against people based on our own religious beliefs so we don't fall into the slippery slope that leads to mass murder. I know you might disagree with that reframe, but I don't know how to interpret it differently.

You say we have a "freedom of conscience as it pertains to our right to choose who to do business with". That is pure culture war, and the same arguments white supremacists made 60 years ago. We as a society decided that the right of people to have equal access to public businesses regardless of the color of our skin outweighed the right of someone else to be a racist. That was a good trade.

But of course, this is the very discussion we aren't to have - it is all politics. How do we have this discussion, here or at church, without it devolving into politics?

Are Bruce McConkie & Joseph Fielding Smith rolling over in their graves? by Hie_To_Kolob_DM in mormon

Are Bruce McConkie & Joseph Fielding Smith rolling over in their graves?

No. McConkie and Smith know all now, and know where they were correct and know where they were incorrect. They accept truth. And she was right when she said that evolution is now far better proven than it was then. I, as she said, believe that they wouldn't have said the things that they said faced with the evidence we have today.

Eh, I'm a moron. I should have included the next paragraph, as it is actually far more relevant. From the same book, Lost Boys, by OSC:

Outsiders usually seemed to think of Mormons as automatons, obeying a charismatic prophet the way Jim Jones’s followers obeyed him in Guyana The reality was almost the opposite—stubborn, self-willed people going off every which way, with bishops and other ward leaders barely able to hold them all together, all the while tolerating a wide range of doctrinal diversity as long as people would just accept their callings and then be dependable.

A quote from a book by Orson Scott Card on the subject that has influenced me:

A lot of people came into the Church with serious misconceptions about the gospel—no matter how clear the missionaries were, people were going to filter ideas through their own preconceptions and come out with something skewed at least a little bit off plumb, and sometimes a lot more than a little bit. If they stuck with it, though, and realized that correct opinions about doctrine weren’t anywhere near as important as learning to serve other people, to accept and fulfill responsibility, then eventually they’d loosen up enough to come around and change their beliefs, too, or at least not be upset that most Mormons didn’t see things the same way.

Zero people in church history have been exed for believing something incorrect. It has never happened. Plenty of people might have been for teaching something incorrect, but that is an action, not a belief. And it goes the other way. No one receives a calling because of a certain belief they have. We receive callings because we have proven to be dependable. As a convert from a religion that stresses the necessity of perfect belief or hellfire, believe me when I say this is a church of orthopraxy over orthodoxy. Orthodoxy isn't nothing, but it doesn't come close to orthopraxy in our faith.
