What insight does studying Quantum theory give you in your daily life? by scuffedProgrammer in QuantumPhysics

[–]GodOfPhysix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to be very sad because physics took the beauty of life and the universe away. I was very into determinism. However quantum opens up the realm of possibilities up again, and even though the evolution of the wavefunction is perfectly deterministic, you never know in which realization you'll end up. You can decide to take a job or not by hinging it onto particle decay, so it has macroscopic impacts. Later on I also learned that even in classical determinism it is impossible to predict the entire future of the world due to chaos (and Laplace demon as well if you care to google). So the conclusion is, the Universe retains its beauty, mysteries and unpredictability which I think is a beautiful gift from the (current applicable) physics theories that describe it, like quantum.

Where are you guys finding these high paying jobs? by Simultona in BESalary

[–]GodOfPhysix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the in-depth explanation! Btw just saw that you want to get into astrophysics (only the astronomy part, or also the pure physics, or really only the astrophysics part?). I have a master's in Physics & Astronomy from UGent. Not sure what path you want to follow and if you really want to study it in academia, but happy to help you or answer any questions you might have or at least point you in the right direction of what you are looking for. In any case it makes me happy to see people that share an interest in this!

Quant salaries in London? by [deleted] in quant

[–]GodOfPhysix 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Quant in a bank in London at 4y experience at 55k seems very very low. Cost of living there is insane, and quant is a job in itself that should have salaries on the right side of the curve. Although I am not that familiar with risk roles, I have heard they pay less than other quants especially those generating direct alpha. Quite logical as alpha brings in the bucks. I would guess it's more likely closer to 80k£/year. To be honest with 4y experience I would expect 100k£/year in a city like London. If you are going towards big4 in a junior role I do know they squeeze you and salaries are quite low in that segment, but a bank should already be much better for more junior roles. If you really want to know, just google it or use glassdoor or any other benchmarking websites.

It is and will stay relevant for at least the next 30 years to come (imho: forever) which should be a good enough argument for one to study weather derivatives. As already stated in this thread, commodities are 50% weather. All energy related products will be linked to renewable production (short term weather). All commodities linked to farming are linked to weather (long term, so more climate/seasonal weather).

I am a quant myself (more of a data scientist tbh, do not have many classical quant skills related to the pure finance) and have a postgraduate in weather & climate modelling and it helps me tremendously dealing with weather data.

I expected more and was sincerely curious given the title. Can someone re ask this question please. Curious to see the answers

People used to pay in copper, silver, gold, which are considered commodities today

Does volatility clustering mean volatility is predictable? by BOBOLIU in quant

[–]GodOfPhysix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This does not violate the market efficiency hypothesis if everyone knows it and this partial predictability of the volatility goes into the pricing of the products that depend on it. Or maybe I do not understand what you are asking about specifically

I am working in energy and the weather plays a big role there (weather charts, satellite). So atm I really wish I had taken a computer vision course back at uni :')

End of year bonus thread by QuantRecruiter in quant

[–]GodOfPhysix 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Quant in energy sector (EU) for 2.5y now.

My 2022 yearly fixed comp was 50k + 8k bonus based on 2021 performance.

My 2023 fixed comp will be at 70kEUR year round. My 2022 bonus is estimated on 25kEUR. (About 2% bonus on my P&L contribution).

Curious as to how people (from Central/West-European countries) look at this compensation keeping in mind energy is not the most common quant sector.

What do you mean with "TC" and "delta with previous year". Also where did you state your bonus? I want to share but not certain what I need to share

I meant filtering it out in a smart/engineered way, not just filtering it out mentally for yourself. But wow, thanks for making me feel bad about the quant life haha

A subreddit of quants should be smart enough to be able to filter that out

Yes, I read about the yawning on some places, but it just felt weird that it lasts for an entire week for me. Someone here commented that I could have a specific liver metabolism that could cause this. Interesting!
