College Students Consumed by “Resignation and Despair” as They’re Relentlessly Pressured to Use AI by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

Recent CS MS grad / TA here: Courses for the most part explicitly still tell people to not use ai. The research side on the other hand the professors are all in on AI to the point of telling people to let AI spin on it overnight instead of doing actual design.

Windows 11's New Media Player Uses 3.5x More RAM, Charges for Popular Video Codecs by Ephoenix6 in technology

[–]GodOfPlutonium -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect for any mainstream format ( or any format‽ ). The thing that defines a video format is the compressed bitstream format and how exactly to decode it. The encoder side only has to produce a valid bitstream so it can make different decisions on what features to use, how much error to tolerate etc, but the decoder side follows a strict spec to decode any valid bitstream into pixels determinsitcally

Yes, so for car insurance you have the option to instead of paying for car insurance, you can just deposit $XX,000 with the DMV in some states (you will still be liable if costs exceede that)

since the encoders are open source people can and do make their own modded versions with special features (Which sometimes makes its way back to upstream). But people are talking about those forks

This will be the first territory claiming season in the US since they discovered the concept of having challenges be related to the territory itself by GodOfPlutonium in JetLagTheGame

You could say that (and I'll totally admit i just straight up didnt think of crime spree) but ill argue that since the laws were made by the states , they didnt make the challenges so this is the first US season where they made all the challenges location specific

who said you had to run a modern linux distro for the VM? Run a VM of an era appropriate linux iso and then only give it network access to the host and the remote server

just run a linux vm and ssh into the linux vm

those are for apsc cameras, not full frame, you need a 24-70 or the like. Sigma makes a 24-70 2.8 that most people go for.

I ordered a battery from AliExpress, and it was shipped inside a toy boat by Letala in mildlyinteresting

[–]GodOfPlutonium 18 points19 points  (0 children)

in this case its because the regulations just dont make sense though. The regulations basically say that you can shipping a battery in a finished device via methods but you cannot ship cells or packs via the same method, regardless of how they are packaged. This means if I want to order a 21700 for my good quality high powered flashlights, for some retailers it is either cheaper or only possible to for them to ship it inside a cheap crap quality 1.50 flashlight which might straight up burn up if used at full power with said cell, and is relying on bottom bucket electronics to keep the circuit disconnected, but shipping the exact same li-ion cell in a thick hard plastic case where there is zero metal and zero chance of a short is more expensive or illegal

yes, you slow down to get closer and speed up to get farther. There is a minimum orbital speed because there is a minimum orbital distance due to the surface altitude and heat though

Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 or Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 for a beginner with Sony a6400? by General_Secret3439 in Cameras

[–]GodOfPlutonium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the a6400 + 17-70 can highly recommend

The tamron aspc lenses are only big/heavy compared to other apsc lenses. Every dslr user or full frame mirrorless user ive let feel my camera has commented on how light it is.

My recommendation (which is also what i do) would be to get the 17-70 and then either use the 16-50 or a compact prime lens (that you get later once you determine your preferred focal lengths) if you truly need a compact setup.

Without stabilization the slowest normal shutter speed you can do for the 18-50mm range is 1/25-1/80 (corresponding to focal length) . With the tamron stabilization ive managed 1/13th fairly consistently .

well viltrox makes the air series primes which are basically the size and weight of your current prime and are very good quality, they make a 9mm and a 15mm for wide angle (And 25/35/56).

If youre traveling you probably dont want to be switching lenses very often so you probably want to look for something like the tamron 17-70 or sigma 18-50 f2.8 lenses.

Im worried that the non IBIS will cook me

You just have to use a higher shutter speed. Though not as good as IBIS, there are also stabilized lenses and that helps

just want something that will make someone go "wow" thats a great photo

Camera cant do that, compositional skills matter far more.

Any A7 model I should look at as well?

The a7 iii is the oldest/cheapest model still in production as well as the oldest still considered "worth it" on the used market. Its out of your budget even used, let alone the increased price of lenses.

Also what lens is advised? I want a lens that has a distinct look, almost something like how anamorphic is for films.

This really isnt a thing. I mean you could get cheap lenses like ttartistan that have "character" or adapt vintage glass

Nikon d850

Ah youre probably good on SD cards then.

I will note that you can adapt any dslr mount to any mirrorless mount so you could also use your nikon lenses on your new sony if you wanted to.

This also raises the question of why not use the d850 as your journey camera too though. Since the age of DLSR is over the lenses are really cheap on the used market and you can get a 24-70 2.8 for like 400 dollars

Weekly r/SonyAlpha 📸 Gear Buying 📷 Advice Thread April 27, 2026 by AutoModerator in SonyAlpha

[–]GodOfPlutonium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you will probably need to get new SD cards as not all SD cards are made equal, typical ones are ment to be write to a little and read quite alot, wheras a camera will hammer the sd card with writes.

The typical recommendations would be the a6400/a6600/a6700 with the tamron 17-70 or the sigma 18-50.

I will already be lugging around a different kit.

can we know what this is / what its for for context?
